Mangaluru-orign Rear Admiral Nelson A J D’Souza is new Director (Operations) at Goa Shipyard

Panaji, Apr 30: Rear Admiral Nelson A J D’Souza of the Indian Navy has been appointed as the Director (Operations) at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a key public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence.

Prior to this, the Mangaluru-origin REar Admiral had served as the Commandant of the Military Institute of Technology (MILIT), Pune, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening academic initiatives, enhancing tri-services integration, and fostering industry-academia collaboration in advanced technologies. MILIT trains officers from India’s armed forces and allied nations to tackle future defence challenges through technological excellence.

Commissioned into the Navy in March 1991, Rear Admiral D’Souza is an alumnus of of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru and SJCE Mysuru, holding a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He has also graduated from the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the Naval War College, Goa.

Son of the late Lancelot D’Souza and the late Winnifred D’Souza from Kalpane, Kulshekar, he is married to Shylon D’Souza, daughter of the late A B Rodrigues and Florine Rodrigues. They are blessed with two sons Nihal and Shawn.

In his 33-year naval career, he has held several significant positions including Chief Staff Officer (Technical) at the Eastern Naval Command, Principal Director (Weapon Equipment) at Naval Headquarters, and General Manager (Refit) at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. He has also served onboard warships including INS Viraat, INS Kirch, and INS Mysore. In 2018, he was conferred the Nau Sena Medal for distinguished service.

At GSL, Rear Admiral D’Souza will oversee the shipbuilding and repair operations, bringing his deep technical knowledge and leadership experience to strengthen India's maritime defence infrastructure. A native of Kulshekar and an alumnus of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, he is expected to contribute significantly to GSL’s goals aligned with the Make in India mission for defence self-reliance.
