Mangaluru: Heat wave to continue in coastal region till May 2

Mangaluru, May 2: Mercury is soaring day by day in most districts of Karnataka, including the coastal region. The State Natural Disaster Management Centre has warned that the heat wave will intensify further in the coming days.

According to instructions from the Natural Disaster Management team, the heat wave will wreak havoc until May 2 in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi districts.

To prevent sunstroke and dehydration, the public is advised not to venture out in the sun between 1 and 3 pm. It is recommended to wear light-colored cotton clothing and to consume water frequently.

An extreme heatwave with temperatures reaching 39.3°C in Kadaba, 38.1°C in Uppinangady, and 37.4°C in Kokkada of Dakshina Kannada district was recorded on Wednesday, May 1.

Throughout Wednesday, there was a mix of sunlight and cloudy weather, with an average temperature of 36.4°C. The weather department has indicated a possibility of drizzle on May 6 and 7 in the coastal region.

Officials from the weather department have advised people to refrain from going out between 12 noon and 3 pm. The water level in the Thumbay vented dam decreased to 4.34 meters on Wednesday, while it was 15.96 meters in the AMR dam. According to sources from the Mangaluru City Corporation, approximately 50 to 60 MLD of water is pumped from Harekala dam to Thumbay every day.
