Significant surge in electric vehicle registrations in Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Apr 27: There has been a steady increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in the state of Karnataka. From 2020-21 to 2023-24, registrations have seen a 1275% rise.

According to transport department officials, Karnataka ranks third in India in terms of the number of electric vehicles in the country, with Uttar Pradesh topping the list followed by Maharashtra.

In 2017-18, there were just 1922 EVs. Now, the number has risen to 159,428, which includes two, three, and four-wheelers. In Karnataka, there are 3.4 lakh EVs, out of which 2.98 lac are two-wheelers, while 23,516 are four-wheelers and 18,246 are three-wheelers.

Additional Transport Commissioner Jnanendra Kumar said, “When these vehicles were first introduced, there were very few buyers. They were not sure about their performance, and people were worried about charging stations as well. In 2017-18, there were only 1922 EVs, including 97 two-wheelers, 1589 three-wheelers, and 236 four-wheelers. Now, with an increase in charging stations in towns and cities, and many EV sellers in Karnataka, the number of EVs has also risen.”

The Karnataka government is providing subsidies on EVs (except for vehicles costing above Rs 25,000), creating awareness about the environment among the public. This has led to the increase in the number of EVs. In 2023-24, out of the EVs registered, two-wheelers constitute a whopping 140,327, while cars are 13,667, and three-wheelers are 5,434.

@Rajan very right; EV is just a hype and hoopla in a country where more than 70% of electricity is generated by coal!! The other points have been covered by you. One more point to add is the disposing off of worn out solar panels and wind mill blades...containing deadly constituents!

@Vinod; please listen from the CEO of the company in all types of cars in India; I believe in his logic and predictions you decide:::: "With over 70 percent of India’s power generation coming from coal-based power plants in the present day, an accelerated shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) might not be the ideal solution for the country, which is on a mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070, as well as lower its transportation emissions. While EVs have gained global recognition as the most suitable zero-tailpipe-emission mobility solution for most vehicle categories, they do not necessarily emerge cleaner than internal-combustion-engine-based hybrid powertrains from a well-to-wheel perspective. According to RC Bhargava, Chairman, MSIL, “Almost 75 percent of India’s energy is today generated by coal, and while it is projected to come down to 50 percent by FY31, in the existing scenario, hybrids (cars) are cleaner than EVs in terms of total carbon emissions.”...

EV is considered green energy .. While there are various challenges .. faster adoption of mfr ev ‘s etc in on going govt policy ..issue is how much is actual green .. The battery is as of today mainly lithium .. Requiring extensive mining One tonne lithium mining is equivalent to 15 tonnes carbon dioxide into the air .. A lot of water is used in mining .. India imports lithium... Further India .. electricity generation about 60 % by coal .. thermal plants .. So we need careful studies for survival of Mother Earth .. Govt should Increase more of public transportation ... trains ..buses .. waterways wherever possible .. Everything is at a price .. Human consumption!l

Kujumaji; mark my words; this EV hype is not going to last for too long; hybrid fuel cars will sustain their lead, and are in for a long haul!!

Hybrid cars are of not much benefit as they carry a small battery. Plus the maintenance costs will be high as they carry components of both EV and ICE. They have proven to be of much higher fire hazard compared to EV. The future is pure EV.

.there are numerous cases of battery blasts also. They were old cases , now improved safety measures. Mostly due to customer doing ched chad adding after market electrical ligts/horms .

Battery blasts have happened only in non branded vehicles (two wheelers). In 4 wheelers only one case of EV fire in TATA Nexon has been reported so far out of more than 1,50,000 sold so far. So the fire risk is very low.
