Mangaluru, Dec 3: In honour of Fr Mullers Medical College's silver jubilee celebration, the Indian Psychiatric Society's women's and Mental Health Speciality section and perinatal psychiatry speciality section organised the 7th National symposium on Women's Mental Health and Perinatal Psychiatry 2023 in association with Fr Mullers Medical College and Mangalore Psychiatric Society here at Decennial hall on Sunday, December 3.

"This is the second time I am attending this event. Women's health and prenatal care are two areas of greatest need, and they've accomplished a lot in just seven years. There are several structural contrasts between old joint families and modern nuclear families that should be addressed and prioritised. And many more such symposiums will be organised to ensure that women's mental health is preserved," said Dr Arabinda Brahma.
Director of Fr Muller Charitable Institutions Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho emphasised the importance of neutralising the use of psychiatrists. "We are the first in Karnataka to have the largest mental health facility. In today's world, people are hesitant to seek help from psychiatrists. Although individuals have no problems about referring to other doctors, they are afraid of psychiatrists, which should be normalised. The divorce rate is significantly increasing, and women tend to stay alone far more than men after divorce," he noted.
Fr. Coelho emphasised that mental health is not gender-specific, and that its impact on women is the same as it is on men, emphasising the significance of receiving appropriate care.
Dr Omprakash Singh, editor of the Indian Psychiatric Society, spoke about continuing research attempts. "Our Journal is now ranked fourth in India, but we still need a lot of research, especially on women's health. It is our responsibility to raise awareness and conduct research, and we do our best to provide our results to the government in order to impact appropriate legislation in the future."
Chairperson of woman and mental health speciality section Dr B K Waraich welcomed the gathering, organising chairperson Dr Supriya Hegde Aroor proposed the vote of thanks and organising secretary Dr Aruna Yadiyal compered the event.
