Mangaluru city might be declared ‘not fit to dwell’ in 10-20 years, suggests report

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Dec 1: A tree count research report done by NUCSER Nitte Biomedical Science College has increased the concern of citizens of Mangaluru.

The report warns that the city might be declared not fit to dwell in the next 10 to 20 years. The report says that there are only 6.24% trees in wards and public places of the city.

Trees are cut in the name of development. The city corporation is not planting enough plants in places where trees are cut. This has reduced the number of trees in city considerably.

The report suggests that government should take suitable action immediately and commit itself to save the environment. In addition, citizens should also save the environment in the land that they own.

It is said that oxygen level is depleting in the city as the trees are reducing and temperature is soaring. The team led by Dr Smita Hegde, deputy director of NUCSER counted the trees in the city and made the report.

Award should be given to our small and big politicians and our real estate businessmen. Next award to all those rich guys who buy more than 1 house as investment and create the demand. They are creating a cemetery for the future generations.

Padav and Alape Padil have highest green cover of 64 percent in Mangalore city as per this report. Respect to all these private land owners who love trees more than money. They must be suitably rewarded and recognised for their efforts for increasing oxygen levels.

First of all there is no place reserved for planting trees when the new concrete roads are built. Shops are located very near to these roads without maintaining road margins. If the road margins are maintained then we can plant trees near footpaths.

This report has to be an eye opener, Mangalore is definitely an environmental disaster. Greenery is definitely ignored, destroyed and interlocks laid everywhere. Not water retention and low rainfall is already drying up rivers. Pollution levels are higher than that of international standards. I wonder since ONGC owns this company if Engineers/production managers are monitoring emission levels. Very sad state of affairs.

I dont think green resources are depleting in Mangalore. Despite bunch of real estate projects, Mangalore still is very green in city centre itself......Mumbai or even recently bangalore is totally void of green..its so so polluted in these cities. Compared to those Mangalore is still very very green. I am saying this by seeing the city from my 23rd floor of apartment building.

Surprising to see defending no green at Bangalore and Mumbai ,just because Mumbai and Bangalore does not have enough tree cover, Mangalore too should be allowed to fell trees ..? Have you thought on catastrophe from these felling? Today’s national papers report that Fish catching has dropped by 40% and one of the main reason states that sea needs temperature of 23-24* Celsius but it has risen to 28-29 and fish m over deep in to water . While defending the tree felling on our commercial greed , lets also think on our kids and their future .

As if you have common sense. You people blame mangalore politicians and officers for delay in infrastructure projects. But its because of same people like you who bring a stay order while any projects are being implemented. First of you must know that all metro cities have less green cover due to concrete structures. Development comes at the cost of green cover only. Be it india or any foreign countries. Go and see any surverys, Mangalore is always marked as one of cleanest cities of india and least polluted city.

@real kujuma; it's a well known fact that 75%+ of all open wells have been contaminated by sewage water and remaining by industrial wastes; this water is not fit for drinking; even borewell water, due to lowering of water table depth is contained with heavy metals and very deleterious to human health! CANNOT FATHOM HOW, IN SUCH A SITUATION, PERMISSION IS BEING GRANTED FOR MORE HIGH RISES! WITH NETRAVATI BEING SCREWED UP BY THE YETTINAHOLE PROJECT, IT'S ANYBODY'S GUESS FROM WHERE THE WATER SUPPLY WILL COME TO CATER TO DO MANY MULTISTOREY SKYSCRAPERS??

Warning signals were being blown by many environmentalists and even laymen, since long, regarding the rampant destruction of forests containing very old and valuable trees especially in the Western ghats and other reserved forests region; the forests have been plundered ruthlessly, which is the exact reason why so many wild animals are coming into conflict with human settlements; this wild animal menace will go on increasing as the temperature shoots up because of lack of food and even drinking water; no doubt many large estates are up for sale with acute shortage of water and labour! This is an alarming situation indeed as to regrow even a small percentage of these forests would be a herculean task and also the extra long time these trees would require to grow back even to somewhere near the original size! All in all, the situation has already gone much beyond repair! Now praying to any Gods or Goddesses will not yeild any results as greedy man has already taken the curse upon himself, which his progeny will have to bear and suffer!!

We already call our City as Concrete Forest. Our builders have cut the natural tree-growth and the widening of roads done the danger. Still our builders cutting trees for construction of flats, buildings and for what not. Our environmentalists dont protest about this. It is not known where the trees are planted in leiu of cut trees. The statics are not known.

City like Mangalore don't need tall buildings. it needs more resources like water, electricity etc. Which makes many problems in future. Every summer we have shortage of water. In coming days situation will be worst. Many trees have been cut down in name of development .

Infrastructure and luxury can never satisfy humans, contrary it can bring disaster. First of all humans have to learn to live peacefully and happily, for that lay strong foundation on human life values, character, sacrifice, health and right principles. All other things can be built, sustained looked after well naturally thereafter. If not, selfishness will grow to the extent there will be only disaster and everything will go in drains.

Report is quite grave and thought provoking... However it is hard to accept the conclusion in letter n spirit... We have mega cities in the Middle East where there are hardly any tree cover... But authorities are planting n maintaining trees n green cover... City becoming unlovable is difficult to accept in scientific sense .. Anguish is understandable and corporators must act in the right direction...
