Mangaluru: Saanidhya seeks financial help for playground for intellectual disabled children

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jun 9: Saanidhya 'Abode of God' is a school dedicated to the welfare of intellectual disabled children. The institute was founded on April 4, 2003. The institution was started with only two students and a teacher at the founders' residence. As of now, there are 170 students with intellectual disabilities who lack access to the special school or training facilities.

Also, Saanidhya is now providing a lifetime stay facility for intellectually disabled children. This facility was started in the year 2018. As of now, there are four students in this facility.

Vasanth Shetty, the founder of Saanidhya, to make the intellectually disabled children, physically fit, has now come forward to purchase land for a playground. The institution has been run with the complete support of donors. Though the founder has identified a 40-cent land, the cost of the land is about Rs 1.50 crore. Hence, he is expecting the donors to come forward and help him to buy the land for a social cause.

Vasanth Shetty has been running the institution since 2003. Without expecting anything in return, he has dedicated his life to the development of intellectually disabled children. Saanidhya is providing the facility for children suffering from mental retardation, down syndrome and autism. Saanidhya is providing nutritious food and gives a lot of importance to cleanliness and hygiene. The specially-abled children are admitted to the classes after studying their intelligence quotient, age, and ability. Students are trained in basic computer education and other job-oriented courses. Moreover, children in Saanidhya are in crafts and arts. The craft includes a flower bouquet and paper bags. Special educators including psychologists are helping the students in Saanidhya with their mental development. The students here are trained in dance, Yakshagana, and sports. The children have participated in sports and cultural programme in the country and abroad and brought laurels to the institution.

Vasanth Shetty also recalls that his wife had supported him a lot in his social service. With the help of like-minded friends, he has started this institution. Now, the institution is nurturing 170 specially-abled children and providing employment opportunities for 62 staff.
