'Couldn't find a single toilet', woman writes to President Murmu on her ordeal in Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru, Jun 8 (IANS): A Karnataka woman's letter on how she was forced to attend nature's call in public in the absence of public toilets at a pilgrimage centre in Chikkamagalur district has gone viral on social media.

Jademma, the devotee, who wrote the letter in Kannada, has described her ordeal in detail.

She has urged President Droupadi Murmu to ensure the construction of public toilets at the pilgrimage centres, which are visited by lakhs of people. She also stated that the President is an inspiration and symbol of confidence for a woman like her.

The letter reads, "the main objective of the letter is to bring forth the pain of common women like me.

"Few days ago, I visited Bababudangiri Datta Peeta, Mullaiyyanagiri and Seethalaiahyyanagiri, all Hindu pilgrimage centers. At Bababudangiri, I started to get a sensation for nature's call. I could not find a public toilet. Suppressing the urge, I climbed Mullaiyyanagiri hill. I searched for toilets but to no avail.

"Later, I climbed Seethalaiahyyanagiri and looked for the public toilet. Every moment the sensation was growing stronger. I could not tolerate it and swallowing humiliation, I peed in the public place swallowing the humiliation and insult.

"Every day, people fight for their religions and gods. But, their negligence towards building toilets is unfortunate. When we get the urge for nature's call, we forget which religion we belong to and attend it. If there is any place in the world which is used by people of all religions at all places, it is the toilet.

"You are also a woman like me. But, you don't face my problems as you are in power and you have people to serve you. But, non availability of toilets has brought down the dignity of women like me. You can understand the pressure of a normal woman regarding attending nature's call.

"Women know the difficulties faced by women. The absence of a public toilet at a Pilgrimage centre visited by lakhs of people is a violation of Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution. We have reached Mars but could not build a toilet at these pilgrimage centers.

"India is the capital of diabetes in the world. They are highly dependent on public toilets. The people of Karnataka won't forget if you build a toilet facility here."

it is unfortunate that millions of money collected by temples are not used to develop the infrastructure of the templates or surroundings. Only money hoarded and kept in banks. They should utilize this money for basic infrastructure required for the pilgrims. He goons are busy in banning other religious traders.

To set your statement correct , millions collected from temples are taken away by Govt. to distributed against other faiths. This is not correct, if laws prevails it should be same for all faiths . There should not be special treatment of one relegion and different for relegion.

Most of the Pilgrimage centres have toilets but no proper directions to show the toilets. Temple management are tired of maintaining these toilets since some people or outsiders come to use toilets since government is least bothered to provide toilets in temple surroundings, markets and busy areas. People are ready to pay and government can make rs 20 monthly card to use through out the month and any government toilets. Our planning department has incompetent people who sits like a frog in a well.

If one is a VIP or politician in power, one will have access to plenty of five-star toilets. I do not understand writing to the President nothing will change. We all have seen how much power the President has during the recent Parliament inauguration. The whole country saw how helpless she was being the supreme commander of the forces. What she can do? Someone else wants to get the credit for everything. Now the president has to write a letter to herself just to feel better.

I salute this bold lady who wrote letter in Kannada to our lady president. Where are the toilets built in BJP rule?? Are they all vanished and become cows shed or was it a jumla by BJP. I strongly feel now Congress will look into this issue and help the ladies to build toilets.

BJP MLA was too busy with playing communal politics with above mentioned areas rather than concentrating on public amenities for people visiting holy places so people rightly showed him the door.

Dear Jedamma: Very sorry to hear about your suffering during your place of worship at Chikmagalur Fortunately for you, you were there for a short visit. What about the other women who visit and live there? I recall when I grew up in undivided Dakshina Kannada, people had no toilets in the 1940s and all nature calls had to be done in nature in as privately as possible! Nobody complained! I do see once in a way, when I travel around in North America, there are no public toilets and people do survive even in 2023! How a President can help anyone in same or similar situations when one decides to visit places for any reason, not just for religious reasons! A thought for the future! Regret not to come out with a solution that you asked the President of India who happens to be a woman like you but for her enviable current position!

First we have to build toilets which is more important than giving the same tax money for free fake guarantees and getting commission. MLA of this area should be responsible for this.

Oh! We still have toilet issues in India? I guess our PM Modiji has constructed toilets everywhere after he became PM and has declared India open-defecation free. Then how this lady did not find public toilet even at such a popular piligrimage place? I think she is trying to defame our loving PM. She must be from tukde-tukdre gang or deshdrohi. File a case on her for spreading lies. All these people are hell-bent on tarnishing PM Modi's name and image!
