“Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction” Blaise Pascal, French Philosopher

India has the rare distinction of being número uno in many fields. I’m not talking about the new poster boy Bindra shooting the first-ever Indian Olympic Gold in an individual event in the Indian Olympic history! The other day a telling verdict was out: A total of 42% of Indians, that is, almost half of our country - men living in our backyard, live below the poverty line! A good 42% of them!! And the report says that it is a third of the world’s poor!!! Spare a thought to it if you can comprehend what it means. Our record of human rights is none to be proud of. And add to it crimes, communal violence, illiteracy, pollution and corruption. You have it all or most for sure! These are demons that sap our country’s resources no end. Another thousand years or so to toil 24×7 to obtain freedom from these evils. So dancing in the streets owning the achievements and billions of Mittals and Ambanis or our very own IT prowess and the cricket records of a select few can really wait.

For Past few days Kashmir has been bleeding. Bihar, Assam and UP are overflowing. Their misery knows no end. And as if that is nothing to be cared for, rogues were having a field day in Orissa! The hue and cry that has often been raised even by educated Indians is that there is a lot of foreign-sponsored conversion taking place in India and therefore the self-styled custodians of our culture are busy ‘converting’ other well-meaning and often uneducated or unemployed sheep to their fold! What a way of imparting education and driving away unemployment!!

The population of Christians in India is 2.3%, which is inclusive of Catholics, all Christian denominations and other sects. Hindus are 80.5% (2001 census). Can’t a person with an average IQ wonder if or why the 80% of the majority are afraid of the 2% of the minority? And how many of those 2% are not in the 42% who live below the poverty line? Mind you, Christians have been in India for about 2000 years! 2% for 2000 years after all the so-called aggressive conversion!! So, one thing is clear that there is more to the now number one accusation meted out at Christians than meets the eye!!!

When communal violence erupts, un-informed Christians (there is no lack of them either) point their fingers out towards Hindus. And that hurts. As all Christians are not saints, so all Hindus are not violent. Let’s get that straight. Besides, often violence is owned by or attributed to a few organizations only. My ignorant mind is not ready to accept that these organizations – you name them - are only made up of such people! There surely and most of all, are good, well-meaning and dedicated people who work for real issues.

Fanatics… Well, their tribe is everywhere. It is surely not proper to any one religion. I am of the opinion that there are Hindu fanatics, Muslim fanatics and Christian fanatics too. But all Hindus, Muslims and Christians are not fanatics. Another thing that needs to be reiterated is that our mission for “Sarva Jana Sukhino Bhavantu’ doesn’t need to be the outcome of our political or religious affiliations only. It is rather the hallmark of our Indian culture, of our Indian identity and our very existence!

People who are aware of westerners who are converted to Indian, Hindu philosophy or way of life and frequenting ashrams, temples both abroad and here in India would agree that a bit of western prosperity is flowing not only to Christians!!! Now was that another accusation towards Christians?

It really hurts to see my India getting converted to un-Indian, violent, intolerant and communal ideologies. I’d bet for that one conversion which all Indians need to be wary of and channel all of our energy to eradicate it from the face of the earth. Then, well, Sarva Jana Sukino Bhavantu will be our and our copyright only.

Dear all , The Indian media (from an overseas perspective) is not giving much attention to news detail on the happenings at Orissa and Christian persecution in general. Most Indian news papers online, nothing much considering the large scale butchering currently occurring. Christian countries are extremely tolerant about their nationals being converted see what is happening in the Sai Baba ashrams, Art of living centers, etc., more westerners than Indians, present!

Here in the US many temples and mosques exist and continue to grow in number. Total freedom for people from other religions to worship, convert, etc., Islam is currently the fastest growing religion! Recently Sri Ravi Shankar was here, Amma from Kerala is currently touring the land, the Guajarati’s are having a major convention in NJ, the Telugu community is having a huge gathering in the US - showcasing their religion and poojaris.

Total freedom for Indian mystics to tour the land, and convert at large, no restrictions. But, in India? A majority is afraid of a microscopic minority. They fear Christ and the Christians, because we hold the truth. And this truth will set the people free.

Freedom is what India was built upon and what we Indians get in the west. In India - A sudden fear and dread of Christianity is growing, false propagation and education is creating a mob type mass hysteria. What can we do? (From Sources)

Dear friends here I found some people are going back to history like portu-indo times... why you are digging the dead horse come out of your narrow mind... please think in broad view.. I want to remind you all that despite religion there are lots and lots of issues in  India like unemployement, poverty, lack of education.  If any one atleast one of you would have thought of this then India would never come to this situation.

Religion is a persons right its not his life.. I must say its an part of our society too.. lets keep it has religion and let us not exeggerate the issue.....Let me remind you all that all this is hapening because of few leaders who are attention seekers.. and another thing none of children of leaders will get into any communal clashes.. they push other youths.... and again this is a very good article keep up daiji posting such nice articles....

Dear Clement, It looked funny just for the sake of argument you are doing. FYI here is the list of people of various faiths apart from Majority. DR. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam , Giani Zail Singh,Dr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed,Dr. Zakir Husain Currentl politics:Sonia Gandhi UPA Chair, Manmohan Singh,..Do you want list of CMs and other big people? Does it make difference between PM & PRESIDENT? By the way head for any country is PRESIDENT. Though PM plays active role in internal politics of India. It is similar to secretary for states in western nations.

While I normally keep away from discussing issues on various religions, this time thought of making a general comment. Let us not devide on religion rather unite on humanity but above all as Indians- Amar, Akbar and Anthony and live in this graceful land with peace and tranquility. We have much violence in this world based on religions and faith. Let us keep our country as ONE RELIGION- RELIGION OF HUMANITY. and thats the only way to reach the creator one day.

Mr. Bharath Shetty/USA. One can agree with your views. But it is difficult agree with "No Muslim" or "No Hindu" can become a President in 50 years. What about in India, being a secular country, "No Muslim" or "No Christian" became "Prime Minister" so far. If fundamentalism by fanatics continues like this, I will bet you, it will take 500 years to a MUSLIM or CHRISTIAN to become Prime Minister in India.

Dear Sunil Mathew Farias, Don’t get exposed by saying only through Christian beliefs one can lead to God. According to you, all people living before 2000 years back went to hell. And currently 3.5 billions in this world are going to hell. (Assuming God is in paradise). Thank you for predicting our future. To justify your acts, you say it is supposed to happen like that even when innocent people are killed. You know what recently one of presidential candidate of USA said, war in Iraq is part of God's plan. Is it not cheating in the name of god to hide the wrong things? I have seen even in Hindu/Muslim community who say their religion is the only path as if they have gone to paradise and returned. The current issue is happening because of people like you [no offense meant it is applicable to all religions] who can not view the things in real perspective and for every wrong thing you do, you paint as god's plan. (Even at the cost of innocent people life). Regarding earth is flat/circle issue. You clearly know what happened to scientist Galilio when he said earth was round & revolves around sun. You clearly know Pope John Paul-2 apologized after three hundred years for the same. First let us believe in Religion of Humanity. Treat all are same. All religions means same thing. God bless all.

Hi Commentators......... For your Kind information Christianity is not about what Catholics, Protestants or Hindus or any other groups think about. Christianity is about Christ and his teachings which are mentioned in Bible. As per the teachings of Christianity which should be the teachings of Jesus christ,

The Gospel will be preached to the Ends of this Earth, before he could come for the second time for which he will use his believers and for which they will be killed and slain. So stop worrying about christians who are getting killed but Pray for those who do it that theirs eyes will be opened and so of their supporters. According to Jesus,Religions are Man made way to reach out to God and its the responsibility of every Christian to lay down his life to tell the truth to every non believer and for wich he will be persecuted and killed.

So whats happening in Orissa or any part of the world is not something which should'nt happen but its been said in advance that it will happen.Jesus said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my words will not. So If you are a christian and believe In Jesus (which means believing in what he said), Please pray for those people who are persecuting christians because of their preaching of the Gospel and Conversion.

People who think all good paths lead to God must be stupid.People use to believe that Earth is flat but when somebody enlightened them(Though Bible had proved before hand, that earth is a Circle)They minds were converted towards the truth. Conversion is very important in every aspects off life. If people are Born poor they dont continue to die poor but rather strife for prosperity. So with what you came into this world is not necessary that he should go the same way.

A christian should be given a chance to study Hinduisam or Islam or Buddhisam. Than its up to him what he believes. Christians not concerned of how many people leave christianity and Join other paths but we are concerned of people who get caught up by death without knowing Jesus Christ. Following Jesus is not a forcefull compulsion but a personal decision of choosing Life and Death.

Dear Dr Urban D'Souza, Mostly u did not read my comments properly. I clearly mentioned only few organizations causing issues. At the same time I clearly mentioned my appreciation of the Christian community for their service. My intention was not to compare . Just to put the things in right perspective. Let me reiterate what I told. I am not against free will conversion. But I am against induced conversion. It is the soft way of human abuse/exploitation. Every religion has uniqueness compared to other religion (may be the way they live, eat , practice…etc). When we understand that boundary, there will not be any issues/clashes. No more I can agree with you on “religion of humanity”. None of our schools have subjects which deals with “corruption, patriotism and truthfulness”. Our political system is totally broken. To give one latest example: There are so many MPs who voted for/against nuclear deal solely on the basis of personal deals (money, ministerial posts, religion ...etc). How can we expect anything better for India by such politicians who are ready to forfeit their nation for their personal ambition? I will bet you, those people will win again in next election. These politicians need some small reason so that they can strengthen their vote bank. Some people blame BJP for vote bank politics. But the fact is they copied that page from Congress. Anyway I don’t think there is any need to mention other parties. From the time NEHRU became Prime minister, we started to move in wrong direction. Still we are moving. This is what I do for betterment. I feel it will work someday. That’s what I say to my relatives and friends. WHENEVER YOU VOTE, VOTE FOR THE BEST CANDIDATE IN THE BALOT PAPER. EVEN HE COULD BE INDEPENDENT. REMEMBER ONLY GOOD PEOPLE CAN DO GOOD THINGS. I think it solves all violence and issues .

Dear Bharath Shetty, I hope you are definetely a highly educated person being in USA. Being we educated people why to bring the issue of religion? Religion is everyone's fundamental right as you have mentioned so also if some one feel for a conversion then it is his fundamental right! Why to blame a community. I being a Christian family born person visit church, temples, mosques, and gurudwara too. In every worship place I bow and respect the God who is one but with many names. Religion should be for the betterment of humanity. I feel humanity is the only religion which must be respected. Being Indians if we go on still talking about hindus, muslims and christians there is no end. As you mentioned with only hindu votes our politicians can win but remember other so called Muslims and hindus are also the citizens of the country. We fight amidst us but if a foriegner visits our country, like mad we respect and carry them. Whether the same respect we claim in foreign land including USA? Let us profess brotherhood and humanity as the only religion for the betterment of our part of the world. Let it be hindus, christians or muslims - we all Indians right! None of them migrated from Europe or Pakistan or muslim world? So why then a divide!!!

  • bharath shetty , Kateel -USA

    Fri, Sep 05 2008

Hmmm..Let me take your word of 2000 years back story. Regarding conversion: Hindu culture is based on family bindings. Not like the western culture were mostly around individual. Hope everyone knows if one person gets converted, how much problem his family people faces (society, personally ... etc).

Is it not stupid to claim one god is better than other god? I agree choosing religion is fundamental right. But inducing some one is fundamentally wrong. I know lots of Christian community with the clean hearted service mind. I appreciate them. But there are some Christian organizations whose sole purpose is conversion. They are using service as the tool to achieve their goal.

I can give out the name of some of those organizations if you want. You people go and attend their meeting place. Then you will realize what they are for. These people inducing either through money or systematically misleading by saying our god is better.

That is the reason mostly uneducated and poor people prey for that. You know Hindus are around 80% in India. I feel Hindus are the best and most tolerant religion. None of the politicians can win election without the help of Hindus. Hindus are gracious enough to elect people of different religion at the highest post of our country.

None of the country in this world did as Indians did. I appreciate all people of India Hindus, Muslims and Christians for representing India as the only TRUE SECULAR COUNTRY in this world. Now Let us take most developed Christian Country USA. Just because Barack Obama has middle name as Hussain (actual it is arabic nane, not muslim name), he had faced lots of hardship to explain people of USA that he is not Muslim.

I will bet you 'No Hindu or Muslim' can become president of USA in next 50 years. So it is always good to look at open mind at the root causes of the issues. Problem happens only when you try to outspace one religion and try to break the fabric of that religion.

It is true for all. Hindus never had or never will have problem with Christians except Conversion. The way Christians had bad people like Hitler, every religion has bad people at different scale. So it is not good idea to blame a religion. God bless everybody and treat all are equal.

Dear Kumar, Please do not insult my tribal friends by calling them poor and uneducated. Also do not be under the impression that these people are cheap as to convert for money. The level of commitment is displayed by the fact that most them have either chosen martyrdom or flight from their wordly possessions than give in to the thugs!

As for the funding, the social activities are funded by Christians from all over the World (both domestic and foreign). And I believe there will be multiples of tons of funds to help rehabilitate the victims.

Dear Shantanu and others, Nobody is questioning one's right to choose a religion. Question is - are they being lured/tricked/mislead to believe and convert into another religion. Even my Catholic friends agree that those missionaries operating in the remote corners of India get tons of 'foreign money' and target poor, uneducated tribal folks. I wish the article addressed this aspect the issue as well. As I said, the intention behind article was good and nicely written too. But, author had left out a few details to give 360 degree view to the readers.

Mr.Jude you there? The Portuguese colonial administration enacted anti-Hindu laws with the expressed intent to "humiliate Hindus" and encourage conversions to Christianity. Laws were passed banning Christians from keeping Hindus in their employ, and the public worship of Hindus was deemed unlawful

[9]. Hindus were forced to assemble periodically in churches to listen to preaching or to refutation of their religion.

[10] The viceroy ordered that Hindu pandits and physicians be disallowed from entering the capital city on horseback or palanquins, the violation of which entailed a fine. Successive violations resulted in imprisonment, Christian palaquin-bearers were forbidden from carrying Hindus as passengers. Christian agricultural laborers were forbidden to work in the lands owned by Hindus and Hindus forbidden to employ Christian laborers.

[11] The Inquisition guaranteed "protection" to Hindus who converted to Christianity. Thus, they initiated a new wave of baptisms to Hindus who were intimidated by their brutality into converting

[12]. The adverse effects of the inquisition were tempered somewhat by the fact that Hindus were able to escape Portuguese hegemony by migrating to other parts of the subcontinent

[13]. Courtesy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goa_Inquisition When the time of colonization they used force for converting hindus, now they are luring with finanacial help by using missioneries to convert hindus. ‘'SHAKTIGINTA YUKTHI MELU” "Dharmo Rakshati Rakshata"

Mr Bharat Shetty, Please note that christianity came to India almost 2000 years ago. In case you don't know history let me remind you that St. Thomas one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ came to Madras almost 2000 years ago. Visit St. Thomas Mount in Madras for verification and if possible do some research yourself to know this truth. On ill effects of conversion on society i can think of none except for the upper caste hindus. They will no longer be able to subjugate people based on caste and will not be able to practice modern day slavery.

This right is available to the poor tribals of Orissa as well, who were rejected by the mainstream Hindus.

Good article with balanced views. I highly appreciate it. However, I would like to point out a minor correction - The author tries to downplay the 'conversion' activities of missionaries using his/her arguement of "only 2% in 2000 years". Though it looks accurate at the surface, it's slightly misleading. The percentage was probably a fraction before European invasion and missionaries followed. Also, we all have to acknowledge how there is an increased incidents of conversion of poor tribal folks in recent decades. Again, a good article with good intention. 'Sarve Janaaha Sukhino Bhavantu' needs to be our mantra. Let's all pray for world peace.

Mr Navaneeth, my friend, you are from Mangalore. Atleast some of your friends must be studying in christian schools or colleges. I would like to ask you this question. Have you ever come across any of your friends saying that there is direct or indirect pressure being exerted on them to convert.

Please go around one more time and ask this question yourself. Once you get the answer, then please write the type of comments that you have written. If the missionaries did that in India, then today we would have had a christian majority. Please remember that christian nations like the British, French and Portuguese ruled our country for over a century.

If force was used then the story would have been different. Please search for the truth first. Once you are able to find it then maybe your comments will be different. Please also read this article by ML carefully once more, and see if you can derieve some wisdom out of it.

Very good and eye opener article. Like in all communities, there are black sheeps. I certainly say that 99.99% of Hindus are good, humane and caring. But the organisations like RSS, BD, Ramsene, Durgavahini and their ideologies are anti Indian in the broader perspective.

These terrorist organisations dont represent the true sentiments of Indians, but reflect the ideologies of their mentors and thinkers. They claim to be the protectors of Hindus and Hinduism, but they dont know that they are causing more damage to their own religion and to the conceprt of One India. They are tearing apart the concept of Unity in diversity. All of us hindus, muslims and chrisitians, must unite and fight against these anti social elements, terrorists. We the citizens of peaceful India must call upon those people to shun violence and spread the message of universal brotherhood. What matters to us is that we are Indian first.

We should also send strong message to the youth of India that if we don't stop these anti national ideologies, pursued by these communual organisations, our great India would break into pieces. Today you are fighting in the name of religion, tomorrow you fight in the name of language and next in the name of state etc. Where are we going. We need a great thinker loike Gandhi. Certainly we dont need any more Advanis or Togadias. They dont protect India. Their mission is to do ethnic cleansing and create a greater India. In a civilised 21st century, these ideologies dont work. I call upon these misguided and ill conceived leaders to stop deviding India on communual lines and let us all say we are Indian first and let us all build a peaceful nation and fight these radical organisations, be it a hindu, muslim or christian organisation.

O people of civilised society, please wake up and make the future more secure for your kids and grand children.

I felt this is a one sided review. Remember that those Hindu organization which were fighting against the missionories/catholics are protecting their religion. Like preaching religion is not a crime as per Christianity or constitution of India , like wise protecting the religion from invading preachers is not a crime. Both parties are equally at fault.

We all know that Christian organizations are very active in Conversion related activity, so I think these things are bound to happen.I have been to Prayer meetings myself and have observed the speeches given by Fathers, as a hindu most of the time I felt it offensive and stopped attending those prayer meetings. Untill these agressive conversion drive does not stop I think even the agression against such drives will not stop, after all you cant clap with one hand...

Fight against British brought the Indians together. Now the domination of majority community is leading towards the disintegration. It will take centuries to heal the wounds created by hatred. If the country is to be saved then allow others to live peacefully and don't terrorize because you have big numbers.
