Irony

I prayed for the sun to warm my heart and brighten my day,

And when the sun shone bright, I grumbled at the heat it gave.

I prayed earnestly for life-giving rain and greenery again,

And then, I whined about the mire beneath my feet.

I prayed for a home to rest in, to welcome friends far and near-

And when the home I built filled with laughter and footsteps,

I protested about the noise that stole my peaceful sleep.

I asked for a companion to walk the long road besides me-

Then I grumbled that my precious time was gone from me.

I asked for a career, rewarding and worthwhile-

And cursed the ringing clock for an endless morning.

I asked God to keep me faithful to His commands;

Yet my words so often wander into tales and gossip.

Each day our life overflows with divine abundance-

Yet ingratitude blinds us to what we have in our hands.

    The poem teaches us to appreciate what we have instead of focusing on what we lack.
