Echoes of Friendship

Echoes of Friendship

It was not a desire of the heart to be with you,

Nor the conjuring of the mind to seek sight of you.

It wasn't the greed for companionship's shining armour,

Nor the relish of a sweet memory that could infuse life after,

It wasn't the guide of your wisdom down the lanes of confusion,

Nor was it the fear of loneliness in the dark corners of life’s emptiness,

That made me ache for your presence in the pristine evening of today.

It was the care and concern that you generously poured,

On the patched and weary soul that buried grief could barely hold.

It was your giving and wanting to give even more each day,

That drowned the shadow of darkness with the brightness you gave.

I treasured not the warmth of friendship, the solace of tender embrace,

But in losing you to the distance of another land, far off from where I am,

I’ve come to see with a wistful heart how true friendship stands.
