Teaching - Noble Profession?

November 13, 2025

We all know that teaching is the mother of all professions. But today, this same profession is not being valued or respected the way it once was. The sad reality is that teachers are now scared to correct children for their mistakes and wrongdoings. Society is favouring the children, not the teachers. Earlier, the Guru or teacher was treated next to God. But nowadays, the situation is such that teachers have to bow down to children and apologise for correcting their mistakes.

Earlier, parents were happy when their kids were punished by teachers for their wrongdoings. But now, the situation has changed — teachers have to apologise even for yelling at children in schools. If this continues, the teacher–student relationship will completely reverse, and a day will come when students will give orders to teachers and get their work done.

Society and parents degrade teachers in front of students, which is very wrong. Students learn from everyone. When elders speak so lowly about teachers, children feel that they should do the same. Earlier, students used to respect and love their teachers deeply. The teachers who punished them the most were often their favourites after they completed their studies and left school. But today, if a teacher scolds a student, the student takes it to heart and reacts negatively.

Nowadays, we often come across incidents where students write suicide notes naming teachers for scolding or punishing them for their wrongdoings. If this continues, students will certainly go down the wrong path. When a teacher fears that his or her name might appear in a student’s suicide note, will that teacher dare to punish the student even after knowing they are going astray? Certainly not, because a teacher too will think it’s better to remain silent rather than risk punishment. This is a very sensitive and crucial matter that needs to be dealt with carefully.

Teachers can come to schools, teach, complete the syllabus, and go home — but in reality, it’s not just a job. It’s a profession concerned with the lives and futures of students, with the school serving as the foundation. For a teacher, making a student pass in every subject is not the ultimate goal — it’s beyond marks. A student’s behaviour, character building, and overall development matter more. If students are not taught what is right and wrong at a young age, then when will they learn it?

The education system today is affected by many advancements. The pressure from parents and society to treat their children like kings and queens is making the situation even worse. Social media has ruined children’s minds and taken away their concentration and interest in studies. Creativity has been completely wiped out when children rely on Google, chatbots, and AI tools to do their projects, assignments, and homework.

Schools were once places where students were exposed to curricular and co-curricular activities, but nowadays, students are deviating from both studies and other activities. Mobile phones have given them a wider platform for entertainment, gaming, and reel-making. They are falling into the trap of the internet world. Young minds lack the ability to distinguish between what is real and what is not — they believe whatever they see on the internet is reality. They do not realize that mobile phones are taking away their innocence, childhood, and spoiling their future. It is the responsibility of both parents and teachers to guide children on the right path. Teachers alone cannot do this — parents need to join hands with them.

As teachers, we cannot simply sit idle when we see students going down the wrong path. When we inform parents about it, they often refuse to acknowledge their children’s mistakes and instead blame the teachers for targeting their children. If this mindset continues, teachers will become completely helpless. It is the responsibility of parents to look beyond and keep an eye on their children. Loving their kids is not wrong, but that love should not be blind.

For a mother or father, the child may be their only one, but for a teacher, every child is theirs. Every student’s growth and success are the teacher’s responsibility and concern. Therefore, on a serious note, parents should join hands with teachers in shaping their children’s future in a good way. Be supportive of teachers in raising children to become good and responsible citizens of the country.

Divya you are right its a noble profession .Otherside one should take their profession whatever it is seriously.Only then it is noble.Sure previously teachers were treating students hard if not correct answer came beating etc. That too is not good.I myself experienced it.Innocent small children should be taught not punish them .Todays world of teaching is different.Children are very bold and hit back to teachers if they correct them :Such conduct should be looked by parents.Parents are the first teachers ,they should bring them good conduct ,and good behaviour .Not only teachers. Here in Germany there are certain religion children dont respect female teachers .That too is not good.Only good behaviour brings them further .Write further .Wish you all the best in your noble profession.
