College Days - The Sweetness of Sour Days

August 22, 2025

When I say “college days,” I know a stream of memories just passed before your eyes. You probably feel, “What a wonderful life it was,” right? Those moments you spent with your friends feel like it all happened just yesterday. If your heart still longs to return to those golden times, then yes-this article is for you.

The First Day of College

On your first day of college, you probably entered the campus with dreams and hopes that had lived in you since childhood. You might have imagined your college life through the lens of movies, humming along to songs like “Oh My Friend…” and thinking, “I can’t wait to grow up and go to college.”

Movies often show only the joyful, entertaining aspects of college life. But when you actually step onto your college campus for the first time, it’s a mix of emotions. Some people are visibly excited, smiling from ear to ear. Others enter quietly, their minds filled with nothing but hope or determination. Some exchange hesitant smiles, while others avoid eye contact-not out of arrogance or ego, but simply because they’re shy.

You may remember that first day-the awkward conversations, the nervous wait for someone to smile back so you could start a friendship. Perhaps you felt a crush beginning to bloom, or the unfamiliar feeling of everything around you being new. Even something as simple as the lunch break felt confusing. Some students didn’t know where to go, while others quickly mingled and made friends. Everyone was quietly observing things about each other and forming first impressions.

For those staying in hostels, college came with a different kind of challenge-saying goodbye to the comfort of home, parents, and familiar neighbourhoods. But after a few days, they began finding comfort zones again, vibing with friends who made them feel at ease. That’s when it hits you-not everyone’s vibe matches yours. Not all friendships click. Finding a true friend is a matter of luck, and not everyone can become your ideal best friend.

A year passes, and now you know the campus well. Slowly, your life starts to resemble the movie scenes you once dreamed of-hanging out with friends, going out, and especially spending hours in the canteen. Whether it’s during lunch breaks or class bunks, that spot becomes the unofficial gathering place for laughter, teasing, and endless stories.

Some people remained focused on their studies, while others fully embraced the value of friendship. Some fell in love, some experienced their first crushes, and others faced heartbreak and rejection. There were fights between close friends, followed by misunderstandings, then the sweet joy of reconciliation. During exam season, group studies became the norm-helping each other, revising together, feeling nervous while waiting for question papers, and being afraid of the invigilators walking around the exam hall.

Then came college festivals-those days when girls dressed up in their favourite outfits and complimented one another, those days when old friends who had fought began to smile again, reuniting with laughter. Boys who had crushes tried to gather courage and approach them, while some students still stayed behind, asking doubts to lecturers and soaking up every moment.

As final-year exams approached, life suddenly shifted. Career worries began creeping in. There were project deadlines, job interviews, family responsibilities, and personal dreams waiting to be fulfilled. Everyone started running their own race- hustling for approvals, preparing resumes, and trying to figure out the next step. The world outside college began demanding attention.

Still, those friendships remained. Though everyone got busy in their own lives, they found time to support each other-whether in money issues, job searches, or just by being a listening ear. Life became more serious. The carefree days of college slowly faded, and with that came a heavy realisation - this was adulthood.

The Memories of Life

After a year of working or settling into a new phase of life, many begin to look back and miss those college days. They long to relive the beginning- just to experience it once more. Some wish they could return only to fix those tiny mistakes they made. Some reflect and think, “I could’ve done this better,” or “I wish I had spoken to that person.”

We start missing the little things - like sitting near the windows of the classroom and feeling the breeze. We forget the fights and only remember the fun. Slowly, we begin saying only one thing: “Those were the best days of our lives.” We try to reconnect with old friends, but it’s not always easy. We lose touch with some people. Some loved ones drift away forever.

When it rained during class, the vibe was entirely different. The soft sound of raindrops mixing with the lecturer’s voice created a unique memory. We remember the jokes whispered during lessons, the group projects, the funny comments about teachers, and how much we learned without even realising it.

College days can’t be summed up in just a thousand words. They are a collection of countless shared moments with different people. People who came together for one purpose- education- but brought with them diverse cultures, backgrounds, attitudes, and behaviours. From them, we learned things that no book could teach.

Sometimes, people became villains in our stories. Sometimes, unexpected compliments or appreciation made our day. There were joyful times and sad ones. But the spirit of being part of a group-the bond we shared with our classmates- was irreplaceable.

This article is dedicated to those who miss their college days and have realised after graduation that those were the most beautiful times. College life taught us countless life lessons- about friendship, responsibility, identity, and more.

Remember this: Now each one of us feels that college life was beautiful. But don’t forget- we are still living through different phases of life. No need for revenge or regrets. Just keep learning. Some experiences are only meant to be felt. They’re not there to teach a lesson or to be held on to forever. Some moments exist simply to be lived and remembered.

Everyone has a different college story to tell. Some dropped out, some succeeded, some laughed a lot, some cried, but each story shaped them into a better version of themselves.

College days - They were the bittersweet moments of our youth. But often, it’s the sour taste that later becomes our favourite. These are the memories that stay with us forever.
