Let’s understand what fear is.
Fear is a feeling that produces a sensation of danger; sometimes we feel that something bad might happen. So instead of running away, fear should be embraced and used as a guide. The longer you allow fear to sit in the mind, the stronger it becomes. If you fear making a call, raising your hand, or expressing your thoughts, go ahead and do it. The only way to conquer fear is through action.
The mistake most people make is thinking and waiting for fear to go away before taking action, but that only magnifies the problems. If you fear answering phone calls or public speaking, volunteer for the next speech.
Everyone has fears. Some people fear remaining inside closed doors, heights, cockroaches, or eating fish. Some people find their fears, like the fear of leading, the task of speaking English, public speaking, grammar, maths, and facing an interview, and so on.
You must find ways to help you cope with your day-to-day fears and anxieties.
Remember: Every day is not perfect! The following tips will help you cope with everyday fears, nervousness, and anxiety.
It is normal to feel fear, so try to identify it through different triggers and sensations, like feeling anxious and nervous, helpless, insecure, & feel like crying when
• I am in the dark
• When I am alone
• When I’m sick
• When my assignment is incomplete
• When I have to give a presentation or make a speech
Question Yourself: What are the few things I can do to calm down? Follow suitable tips.
• Seek support from elders
• Take a deep breath
• Practice relaxation techniques
• Drink a glass of water
• Drink your favourite juice or coffee
• Walk around the corridor or garden
• Count 1 to 10 and reverse 10 to 1
Take time out to physically calm down. Calm-down techniques work because they:
• Shift your nervous system from threat to safety mode.
• Change your thinking patterns.
• Improve emotional regulation by involving more of your logical brain.
• Reduce the physiological symptoms of fear and anxiety.
Activity 1: What are your fears? Make a list.

• I forgive myself and let go. * I’m at peace with uncertainty.
• I am fearless. * I am not alone.
• I face challenges with confidence. * I inhale relaxation and exhale tension.
This story will help you understand that we fear based on our understanding. We forget to think of alternatives beyond certain boundaries.
Someone jumped on the terrace!
Recently, Rahul was alone at home since his parents had gone to the city. After saying prayers, he switched off the light and tried to sleep. Since he was alone that night, he couldn’t sleep, instantly tossing and turning in the bed.
By then, he heard a ‘thud!’ He started to think...
“Who must have jumped on the terrace?” His heart started pounding with fear. His mind said it was a rogue trying to cause trouble, knowing he was alone in the house.
His whole body and mind were focused on trying to hear the footsteps. He started to concentrate with utmost fear, but heard nothing. Then he began to think about different possibilities.
That’s when he calmed his mind, thinking about the alternate chances of that ‘thud’ noise. First, he asked himself: “Is that noise from the terrace or around?”
He felt that it was not on the terrace but from the surroundings. If so, “what could be?” The only chance was that something might’ve fallen from the tree beside his bedroom, since he heard the ‘thud’ only once and didn’t hear any movement or footsteps later.
Oh! That thought brought some relief to him.
Then he decided that as soon as he woke up the next morning, he would check if that was a coconut.
And guess what? Yes, it was a coconut.
The moral we learn from this instant story is:
• Do not fear or assume something bad is going to happen!
• Remember to calm yourselves down!
