How to be an Effective Communicator?

January 10, 2024

Communication is the key to success. Good communication skills builds good human connection. Communication is not just talking, it involves effective speaking, listening, observing and empathizing. The message to be conveyed should be clear, courteous and complete. Having good communication skills not only enhances confidence and self-awareness but also builds trust and healthy relationships. As humans, the greatest gift that we have received is the ability to talk. Why not make the most use of this wonderful gift?

We all want to be good communicators and keep searching for ways to become one. The answer is simple: We have to be an active listener and also, should have SPACE in our mind. SPACE here doesn’t mean empty mind but it refers to:

Smile: It is natural to tremble while communicating. The reason for trembling is the fear accompanied. The more you fear, the more you fail to communicate. Good communication is possible when fear loses its strength. Your smile is the weapon to conquer this fear. Smile helps us relax and releases stress naturally. Try to start your day/work with a smile and see how fear diminishes. Have you observed the Doctors? They have this amazing personality of smiling at the patients and talking to them in spite of knowing that the patient is not doing good. This gesture of doctors assures hope, builds trust and makes the patient worry less about his/her problem.

Passion: Being passionate and mindful helps in easy flow of words. Speak your heart out. Do not hesitate to express your thoughts. Pick the right words, be clear, consistent, and courteous and at the same time be courageous enough to express yourself.

It is very similar to a passionate dancer who enacts and expresses the whole story through beautiful expressions.

Acceptance: Emotional intelligence helps in better communication. Give attention to the tone of your voice and body language. Learn to accept the fact that nobody is perfect. As humans, we tend to make mistakes, donot worry about it. Your imperfections makes you beautiful. Correct the mistake when done and go ahead.

Did we all start writing in pen directly while learning how to write? No! We used a pencil and an eraser, learnt to write and then picked writing in pen.

Confidence: Be confident to present yourself better because vibes speak louder than words. Your thoughts & feelings become clear when you are confident. Preparation is the key to confidence. Believe in yourself and your skills. Give your best but also be equally prepared for the worst.

You must have seen or heard of lions attempting to take down an elephant. That’s the level of confidence to have on one's strength.

Encouragement: You must push yourself forward. You have to encourage yourself, not everyone will do it for you. It is easier said than done but, try to find something positive even in the negative scenarios. There will be situations where you may feel tired, low and hard to take the next step in life but the moment you decide to stop, life stops.

Birds go in search of food & build their nests. Nobody encourages it to do so, but it does. The reason may be multiple things like survival, they are created that way etc., but the drive/encouragement to do is all that matters.

This life is all yours. You have to know your strengths, own your flaws, flaunt your skills, and live your life happily. Let the above SPACE in your mind create more space for happiness and success in your life.

Here is one short poem of mine which I want to share with you all.

The beginning phase is the hardest.
The learning phase is the toughest.
The growing phase is challenging.
But, the succeeding phase is fulfilling.
So, begin from wherever you are, learn what all you can, humble yourself and grow greater.
Rise and succeed like a phoenix, as beautiful as the creator.

I wish your life is filled with loads of confidence, happiness and success.

Keep shining and keep smiling.

Well written article. The importance of Effective Communication is always understated. Specially when IT has made most communication more intrapersonal or impersonal than interpersonal. As human beings a simple conversation can be door openers to cure and prevent so many diseases. Communication builds bridges. A timely article.
