Essential Online Safety Awareness for Today's Generation

The internet is a very interesting place. You can do a multitude of things on this forum. From education to entertainment, animation to displaying your imagination, you learn on it, research for a project, watch movies, shop, create and connect with family and friends. The list of possibilities on the internet is an endless list. Especially with the current youth being highly curious human beings wanting to explore every corner of this spherical world, the internet has a huge impact on our today’s lifestyle.

This interest can help to innovate, discover and invent by using the latest technology to benefit the society at large. But this same curiosity can also lead to terminate, hide or destroy by viewing or utilising misleading websites that can contain pictures, videos, advertisements and a lot more inappropriate or negative content which has a long-lasting effect or cause dangerous situations. Our choice of actions on these various internet-based platforms can be a boon or a bane based on our online activity.

People all around the world today are easily lured into almost an addictive internet usage because the vast and easily usable interface makes the content on the internet highly engaging. For example, a person just wants to surf the internet on a device which has a connection but may end up on a scam or adult website due to random links. If personal information is being shared on these untrustworthy websites, it can lead to huge losses or abuse towards the person whose information is misused.

There has been a drastic increase in cyber-crimes in the recent times, especially after the times of quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the most common cyber-crimes are listed below:

1. Phishing – A form of ‘hacking’: (It is like fishing in a lake, but instead of trying to capture fish, phishers attempt to steal your personal information.)
2. Morphing (To edit an image and make changes using computer animation, highly used to blackmail someone for varied benefits.)
3. Cyber-grooming (Befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a minor over the internet to gain information, or under the objective of sexual abuse.)
4. Identity theft (An individual’s information is used without consent to impersonate them, for purposes like stealing money or other assets, with/without the intention to cause harm to the person.)
5. Cyber-bullying (Threatening, commenting or making fun of someone online in an intimidating nature.), etc.

We need to be very careful if such online crimes happen to us or anyone around us and seek professional help immediately, i.e., to contact the cyber-crime police or people with expertise on these topics. Parents should teach their children about these sensitive topics, supervise and guide their children about cyber activity & their different consequences. Us, as responsible youth must come together and unleash our potential by helping to create awareness about these cyber-crimes and how we must safeguard ourselves for a better and safer tomorrow with network-based technology which is the biggest need of the present generation.

To submit your article / poem / short story to Daijiworld, please email it to news@daijiworld.com mentioning 'Article/poem submission for daijiworld' in the subject line. Please note the following:

  • The article / poem / short story should be original and previously unpublished in other websites except in the personal blog of the author. We will cross-check the originality of the article, and if found to be copied from another source in whole or in parts without appropriate acknowledgment, the submission will be rejected.
  • The author of the poem / article / short story should include a brief self-introduction limited to 500 characters and his/her recent picture (optional). Pictures relevant to the article may also be sent (optional), provided they are not bound by copyright. Travelogues should be sent along with relevant pictures not sourced from the Internet. Travelogues without relevant pictures will be rejected.
  • In case of a short story / article, the write-up should be at least one-and-a-half pages in word document in Times New Roman font 12 (or, about 700-800 words). Contributors are requested to keep their write-ups limited to a maximum of four pages. Longer write-ups may be sent in parts to publish in installments. Each installment should be sent within a week of the previous installment. A single poem sent for publication should be at least 3/4th of a page in length. Multiple short poems may be submitted for single publication.
  • All submissions should be in Microsoft Word format or text file. Pictures should not be larger than 1000 pixels in width, and of good resolution. Pictures should be attached separately in the mail and may be numbered if the author wants them to be placed in order.
  • Submission of the article / poem / short story does not automatically entail that it would be published. Daijiworld editors will examine each submission and decide on its acceptance/rejection purely based on merit.
  • Daijiworld reserves the right to edit the submission if necessary for grammar and spelling, without compromising on the author's tone and message.
  • Daijiworld reserves the right to reject submissions without prior notice. Mails/calls on the status of the submission will not be entertained. Contributors are requested to be patient.
  • The article / poem / short story should not be targeted directly or indirectly at any individual/group/community. Daijiworld will not assume responsibility for factual errors in the submission.
  • Once accepted, the article / poem / short story will be published as and when we have space. Publication may take up to four weeks from the date of submission of the write-up, depending on the number of submissions we receive. No author will be published twice in succession or twice within a fortnight.
  • Time-bound articles (example, on Mother's Day) should be sent at least a week in advance. Please specify the occasion as well as the date on which you would like it published while sending the write-up.
