Creation, Apparel and Veil in Christian Perspective

February 5, 2016

Creation

The Lord God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed into it the breath of life and the man became a living soul. From thence onwards humans are breathing on this planet earth. Lord God is the first to give anesthesia and a first doctor of the humans in this world to conduct a surgery on human. He caused Adam to fall upon a deep sleep and took one of Adams rib and closed up the flesh there of. I quote Genesis 3: 21-22 - "And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof". The rib which was brought out from Adam He created a woman, and God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth and put both of them in the garden of Aden. Once they transgressed the commandment of God they comprehended that they were naked and feared. Prior to that nakedness and fear were not realized / found in them.

The Lord God was the first tailor to stitch clothes for Adam and Eve covering them from their nakedness. I quote Genesis 4:21, "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them".

Wearing of Ornaments

Generally majority of the Christians of the West, Europe and Australia do not purchase gold or wear gold ornaments. We, the Indians have much love for gold and gold ornaments. I quote epistle’s 1 Peter 3:3-4, "But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel". St Paul speaks about spirituality. He says in whatever we wear for outward adorning or in wearing of passionate and colorful apparel, it should be the hidden part of our heart, without much showbiz. I quote 1 Timothy 2:9, "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array".

Apparel and Veil

The Holy Bible is crystal clear about the dress code inside the church and outside of the church. Inside the church St Paul Says a woman has to cover her head while praying and while Prophesyzing. St Paul writes I quote 1 Corinthians Chapter 11:5, "But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven".

This verse evidently says a woman, outside or inside the church, has to cover her head while she is in prayer. Christian scriptures never say a woman should cover herself head to toe always inside and outside a place of worship / Church / Faith Home. Presently, even in the 21st century we can witness head covering in our churches by our loyal, God fearing women. Of course we have to agree that the head covering has been diminished in Catholic Churches and in a few other denominational Churches too. St Paul says if a woman inside the church has her head uncovered while she is praying and Prophesyzing, it is as if she has shaven her head.

Concerning clothes; there is nothing in the Holy Bible that a woman should wear clothes covering from head to toe. There are Catholic nuns and other denominational nuns who have chosen a secluded life, entirely dedicated to God and they cover their head. They don't cover their face and hands with gloves. Presently in India many nuns wear sari (salwar also may be in the offing) which covers their full body (Note to the reader: merely wearing a sari and salwaar will not cover everything, rather dressing modestly does). Hence the apparel which the nuns wear was accepted and chosen by them to remain so when they entered in to the congregation.

In the Genesis we can see Isaac's proposed wife Rebecca came all the way to Isaac’s dwelling place without wearing veil and she did not cover her head. After arrival / entering into Isaac’s land she inquired with Isaac's servant and she covered herself with a veil. I quote Genesis 24:65, "For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself".

The importance of dressing modestly is coherent from the nuns who choose their attire the day on which they enter into their congregation. The Holy Bible scriptures never mention full covering compulsorily unless while they are in a Church / Faith Home or while they pray outside the Church. A few critics may question about Mary, the Mother of Jesus, a pure and a chaste woman wearing full clothing, and why Christian women cannot wear such apparel? To answer the critics; none of us have seen what Mother Mary was wearing and in which attire she was. Mother Mary's photo/picture and statues were imagined and manufactured by humans which are only assumptions and not a conclusion. Scriptures of the Holy Bible do not show in what attire Mother Mary was or what dress she was wearing; since she was a pure, chaste and pious woman chosen by God most obviously she was wearing a modest dress.

Mother Teresa was a living saint and her congregations wear the modest sari. Nuns have all dedicated their entire service to God, to the poor, the destitute leaving behind their father, mother, brothers, sisters, relatives, their wealth, father’s inheritance and their friends, to serve God and humanity.

The Holy Bible scriptures are very clear to any human. Looking at a woman or speaking to her, or women mixing with men is not at all forbidden in the Christian faith. It is a great test from our Lord Jesus to men from our own scriptures. I quote Matthew 5:28, "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart".

Conclusion

Genesis 24:65 clearly says a woman covering her head is a mark of respect and obedience.

1 Corinthians Chapter 11:5 says veil is necessary only when she is in a worship house or in a prayer house outside or inside of the church exclusively while praying and Prophesyzing. It is not imperative to cover her head or cover her full body whenever she is walking outside, moving to a market place, while on tours or sojourning.

Christian man wherever he be while praying should remove his hat and woman wherever she be should veil her head while praying. Wearing of white apparel depicts purity whereas it will not cleanse one's heart, for which the person himself has to strive in life to obtain citizenship of the Kingdom of God. Behold, the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. Yeheshuah sacrificed himself on the cross and made a clear path to all of us to heavenly abode. Lord Jesus provided us a passport and visa to enter into Heaven. However His children should renew the passport and visa (constantly purifying, cleansing and sanctifying the heart) and not allow the expiry of the passport and visa, without which one cannot pass immigration to penetrate Heavenly citizenship. God says to the faith followers to refine themselves like gold tried in fire and clothe them in white raiment so that the shame of nakedness does not appear to thine eyes. I quote Revelation 3:18, "I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see".

I wish, desire and opine all the Christians should wear unenticing moderate apparel. May God bless all of us and all the readers.

Sir, Jerome's Biblical Commentary is written by Modernists, i.e. Modernists "pseudo-intellectuals" have (mis)used St. Jerome's name to sell their book. If you want to learn more about Modernism, read St. Pope Pius X, and you will know who these people are. God Bless.

Kudla da athiest, On more thing. I guess we both know that we have deviated from the article written. Referring to your first part of the comment. Quote," on deeper study specially" Unquote. By deeper study you mean by googling right... There's something I appreciate about atheists. They Help theists to remove the nonsense and unwanted baggage which has been added to their religions across the years by biased people , tyrants etc... You are right when you say you cant believe in those characters. There's something called "negative theology" which we can employ to discern this problem. Eg: A banana is not God , neither is a coconut, He's not almighty etc.. What he is ,is ...Exodus Chap 3:14 "I AM WHO I AM" , God is Love . Can you believe in these characters??? If you can't then as I said earlier, If he's God then YOU gotta believe in Him/her mate.

Mr.Kudla da athiest. Mate, Have you even read THE SICKNESS UNTO DEATH??? Cuz what you've written is utter nonsense. Which website did you cook this up from !! LOL. Do you even have any idea what you've written?? Firstly,Kierkegaard doesn't distinguish between "human Being" and "Self".

Quote "The self, on the other hand, is the process of relating these elements of synthesis to one another. The self is the task of maintaining the proper equilibrium of the synthesis", Unquote.

This is utter bulls#it !! Because, "The self is a relation which relates itself to its own self, or it is that in the relation [which accounts for it] that the relation relates itself to its own self the self is not the relation but [consists in the fact] that the
relation relates itself to its own self"-Anti Climacus. The "Self" which is referred to in the In your Comment which I quoted is...,well you can call it the pseudo self. Thirdly, if you've read and understood Kierkegaard You would know the 3 forms of despair imply the existence of A Relation which constituted the SELF. Which one can imply is God . Do you even know the meaning of DESPAIR... Without googling mate. It’s insulting what you’ve written actually.

Jeremiah, while thanking you for agreeing to disagree with me, i must add , on deeper study specially " Jerromes biblical commentary ' a book of the seminary imprimatur by 2 popes written by over 100 scholars of the church, it states most of the matter to be myths and the gospels, Anonymous, .if attributes of god are based on this how do i believe ?
Anti-Climacus distinguishes between "human being" and "self." The human being is a synthesis, of infinite and finite, temporal and eternal, freedom and necessity, body and soul. The self, on the other hand, is the process of relating these elements of synthesis to one another. The self is the task of maintaining the proper equilibrium of the synthesis. But this task is beyond the capacity of a mere human being alone. Willing to be a self is itself a form of despair. Not willing to be a self is also a form of despair. Being unaware of the possibility of being a self is also a form of despair.

Kudla da athiest, I don't think holding a statement true just because the internet tells us its true isn't wise. Having said that, logically the statement seems true. But as I said WE CAN'T MANIPULATE GOD OR THE CONCEPT OF GOD WE CAN’T TELL HIM WHAT AND WHAT NOT TO DO. He can be the way he wants. What I'm trying to say is, are we right in rationally trying to explain the character of God the way we think is right??? If there is a God then He’ll do and not do every bloody thing he wants. Like crucifying his only son on the cross to save us and loving us unconditionally . Thus the argument you gave/the one Google gave isn’t an argument for the non existence of God. He loves us and he won’t change the laws of nature to disappear the suffering. He respects our free will and so should we respect his freedom of will. “Only the Christian knows what is meant by the sickness unto death. As a Christian he acquires a courage which the natural man does not know. This courage he acquires by learning to fear the still more dreadful”-Anti Climacus . Hope I’ve given an appropriate rebuttal .

This world is not based on justice.Justice done thereafter. God has given options, time and limit. He wants to grade the human on their own personal performance. If he wants he has power to make all humans obedient and good like we have example of angels.Angels never do sins.

The Problem of Evil (or the Argument from Evil) argues that an almighty creator-god, capable of creating or destroying anything and even capable of suspending or re-writing the laws of nature, such as is envisaged by most of the major world religions, should easily be powerful enough to alleviate all needless suffering in the world, to provide adequate resources for everyone, to prevent the occurrence of fatal or debilitating diseases or birth defects and to prevent all manner of destructive natural disasters. Indeed, an infinitely benevolent and loving god, should make such actions his first priority. And yet what we see in the world is very different from that picture - proof positive that there is no such god in existence.-google

The account of creation or story (to some) as revealed in the Bible seems to be puzzling and even a myth to many, including many learned, professed believers in God. They accept the theory of evolution as reliable since it was propounded by evolutionists who are deemed as scientists and since their subject comes in the realm of Science.

Obviously the question arises - how did God create this vast universe in a matter of six or seven days? We forget that in the later chapters of the same Book we also read that “To God a day is likened to a thousand years and thousand years likened to a day.” So the act of creation was not completed in the literal 24 hour x 7 days. The process of Creation was done and accomplished in periods or stages spanning hundreds or thousands of years. And the days or periods mentioned in the Bible are in conformity with Science. According to the Bible plants and trees were created a day before birds and animals. Man was created on the last day that is during the last period or stage of God’s creation. This means birds and animals lived on earth before man came into existence. And these events are in conformity with science, which uses the term “evolution” instead of “creation.” After the formation of the earth, vegetation (plants and trees) evolved prior to the existence of living creatures. Though there are still discrepancies or controversies concerning the theory of evolution, chronologically both are consistent.

I have an atheist at my workplace, we keep arguing about religion, I am an strong believer & he is not, I am not sure what he thinks deep down about religion. But finally I defeat him when it comes to faith.
Luke 18:8 will Jesus find faith when he comes back.
Mathew 17:20 faith small as like a mustard seed.
God has given freedom, so it's a personal choice have faith or no, but one day for sure?

    Dear Sir Das,
Unlike temple or mosque, a church is not a sacred or a holy place. In the Bible, the word “church” refers to a congregation or a group of worshipers and not a sanctified building or a place. The altar in a church building is just an idol, an image or replica of the holy sanctuary. We believe Heaven as God’s dwelling place as He says in the Book of Isaiah, “Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. Where will you build a house for me?”

Again in the Gospel of John, Jesus says “God is a spirit and they that worship Him shall worship in spirit and in truth (with clean conscience).”

    Very well written article.
I hope everyone takes up ones own personal life to the final goal.
As the modern day world gets corrupted with all the materialism, so it gets suicide, crime, drugs and ultimate downfall.
A human being after the age of 80 is almost zero in quality of life, and we can surely count those 80 days gone by so fast.
We are in transit, ultimately it will matter what baggage we take it to the eternity, while reflecting, "Time how Short and Eternity how LONG"
    It is said..
Alas to a man, who finds himself un-prepared for the Eternity, at any moment, for the death might come like thief.
A few years back I read a blog in Yahoo about atheism.
"We could be wrong in our spiritual beliefs and we might end up in just nothing and as dust.
But, how shocking would it be for an atheist, to find contrary, upon his death"

    Mr.Mangalorean Atheist, Quote, “
But religion has no relevance in modern society. It is merely used by the people who are insecure.
We need to look beyond religion” Unquote. Firstly, before Making those claims you need to define religion. This is necessary because as much as you don’t like it, we can’t extricate ourselves from religion. Look around you... Internet is a religion, Music is a religion, Even watching tv is a religion. Now, i know this is hard to process but it is what it is. There’s a God, there are followers, there are rituals or you can call them routines etc... Hell !! Even atheism is a religion. Let me give you an eg: Browse the net regarding any infoif the info that is displayed is contrary to your knowledge, then we begin to think that our understanding is false rather than the one that’s displayed. Isn’t this the same in religious interpretation??? Think about it... We even fought for our religion. Net neutrality is a good eg. Secondly, tryin understand why religion has prevailed... Cuz it helps the society and the individuals. It gives to ppl a sense of community, a sense of purpose, a sense of meaning, a sense of belonging etc. To conclude I would say, no atheist is different from a religious person .

The veil is ancient, and was in vogue among Jewish people much before the time of Christ. The Jewish people most likely picked it up during the Babylonian exile (starting 586 BC).

The early Christians were both Jewish and pagan. So various Jewish traditions were picked up by the Christians, and new ones introduced.

But religion has no relevance in modern society. It is merely used by the people who are insecure.

We need to look beyond religion.

My comment corresponds with the conclusion of the article. The criticism I've given is specific to some of the arguments given before the conclusion. Christianity is not rituals, its not commandments, its not sacraments. Its liberation through Love. Because Jesus is Love.

very good article by gonsalves .hats off to him.
i see Christianity in todays day to day life becomes just a fashion..wearing a big cross in blown chest ,visiting [not for prayers] church, with all odd dresses possible ,with lot of make up and high heels .
please let me know one thing -we need footwear to protect our feet from thorns, stones and heat .what is the need of foot wares inside the church? do they see any thorns there?
olden days every lady used to cover her head entering the church.although all people come walking from their houses , if some one had chappals, they never used to put them inside the church.
old testament, when god calls upon abraham tells him to remove his footwear to come near to him.
why why why we need shoes now ? mini dresses and fashion dresses do not make our god happy..
we do not enter any temple , masjid with our footwear , why we insult our own god ? i see many priests in altar offer mass with shoes !!!
only god can save us ..!!
now i know many will oppose my statements of decency as age old tradition or obsolete practices.
let them ask by themselves ...they will get answers ..

Mr.Joseph Gonsalves. This is a well written article and you have given a well justified interpretation of the bible with supporting quotations. But if we do regrade the creation story we can by reflection and contemplation understand that TRUTH,MORALITY comes from God and not from the scripture. To me, what you've done in the article is exactly what the pharisees used to do during the time of Jesus. They interpreted the scripture and found ways and means to form more rituals and regulation to govern the Israelites. The strict following of Sabbath is one example: to which Jesus said,Sabbath is meant for man and not the other way around. The gospel of John gives a good understanding to the words that Truth Comes From God. I'm not saying what you've written is wrong. I'm just saying its not right.(if you know what i mean). I MUST FIND THE TRUTH THAT IS TRUE FOR ME-Soren Kierkegaard(theologian and the regarded father of existential philosophy).

I mean no offense. Even I'm a Christian. From what I've read, this is my honest opinion and idea. It is a good article non the less.
