When Karma Worked Real Fast...

July 8, 2014

Based on a true story

Dubai, World Trade Centre Metro Station, February 2, 2014, 5.45 pm

Another hectic working day has come to an end and I am waiting for my train to arrive. I hear the familiar metro announcement, that the train to Jebel Ali is arriving at the Jebel Ali Station. Lost in thoughts, and mentally deciding what I should cook for dinner, I navigate my way through a pretty crowded train. On hearing a familiar voice call out to me, I turn around to find my ‘Metro friend’. Glad to find some company for the rest of the half hour journey back home, we smile at each other. Lets call my Metro friend - Riya (name changed to protect privacy).

Riya and I are Metro friends from the past few months. We frequently use the metro line to travel home after work hours and sometimes end up taking the same metro. Although we noticed each other before we became friends, it was Riya who initiated a conversation. Young, pretty, bold and newly married, Riya had come to Dubai pretty recently to join her husband already working in Dubai.

Qualified and smart that she was, she soon found herself a job in Dubai. And here is her story that I like to write about today.

Riya joined work as an accountant (profession changed) in a renowned company in Dubai. She was a hard worker and a complete professional. Her colleagues seemed to love her. Her manager (who was of the age of her father, about 55) seemed to be extremely sweet to her. He would involve her in decision making, discuss general administration issues with her and joked and put her at ease. Everything seemed to be going perfectly well.

Riya’s husband had some important work that came up in India and he was forced to leave Riya alone in Dubai for a few days. This was when the trouble began.

Let’s refer to Riya’s 55 year old manager as Mr. Deepak.

As Riya went to office on Sunday (post weekend) :

Mr. Deepak – Hi Riya, how was your weekend. Which new places did you visit ?
Ms. Riya – None sir, my hubby had to go on an emergency leave to India. So I was home all day
Mr. Deepak – oh poor you !!! Had I known about it, I would have definitely taken you out, to the creek and to the beach !

Riya found this a little strange but brushed it aside as Mr. Deepak was of her father’s age. It must have been a casual offer she thought to herself.

The next day Mr. Deepak rings on Riya’s extension, and calls her to his cabin. He starts with discussing about work, and when done, as Riya gets up to leave, forces her to sit down and chat with him. Well yes ! ‘CHAT’ with him. Riya, awkward, seeing the sudden change in his behavior, is in a fix, not knowing how to disobey the manager. Left with no choice, she reluctantly sits down and Mr. Deepak starts talking of random topics. He begins with places to visit in Dubai and then talks about his family who is settled in Australia (consisting of his wife and daughter, studying in Australia, who is about the age of Riya).

He then continues to talk about his maid, who got sexually involved with some neighbor. Riya gets totally uncomfortable with the topic and does not know how to react or what to conclude of the cheap talk. Soon she excuses herself with the pretext of some important work and leaves.

Next day, to her bad luck, she is left alone with the manager in the office. And again she is called for. Nervous, worried and angry, she walks up to the Manager's cabin –

He begins talking about a software installation and then again continues with random topics. He goes on to tell her that she is pretty but doesn’t take care regarding the way she dresses or does up her hair. That she has the potential to look even better and that he wants to change her !! To mould her ! As per his liking !!!

Red in the face, Riya listens, helpless, not knowing how to respond. Otherwise a very bold girl, Riya is unable to react with the fear of losing her job which was very important to her. He then opens his drawer and holds out a packet, neatly wrapped. "Here you go ! I have brought you a GIFT !!!"

Riya is now definite that a man, of her father’s age was trying to take undue advantage of her. She musters enough courage and says "No Sir ! thanks ! but I don’t like accepting gifts". She gets up to leave. "Riya ! Won't you see what’s in it ?" "No sir, I woudn’t want to". She manages to say. Riya wants to slap the old man. All the respect she had for him vanishes. "I have to leave Sir, I am getting late" she says and leaves.

She lay in bed awake that night, pondering on what went wrong, she had treated him with respect and had regarded him to be a father figure. Was her boldness misunderstood ? Was her friendly attitude mistaken ? She felt disgusted, she felt embarrassed with the entire turn of events. She cried, unable to share the matter with her husband who would have got worried for her, more so as he was away.

The next day, she went to work as usual, she walked into his cabin, sat herself down and spoke – "Mr. Deepak, I am neither keen nor interested in knowing of your colorful past or present. I work as an accountant here and not as a model, so I don’t need to dress to impress. What do you mean by girls of my age go on a date with you ? They must be desperate to earn money the cheap way - I am not !! One should know what to and what not to talk to your colleague, that too me who is of your daughter's age ! Would you tell your daughter to impress her senior colleagues with her dressing ???"

Many times Deepak tried to interrupt and justify himself, and to tell her that she had misunderstood him, but Riya spoke … and she spoke her heart out ! "If you can behave professional with me, I shall continue to work. If not, I shall quit. I will give you my resignation letter right away if you don’t intend to be professional and only professional with me in future," Saying so, she left the cabin.

The following day she arrived at the office. On her table lay an envelope addressed to her. She opened it, and to her horror it read "We regret to inform you that we no longer need your services at our company...

A Termination Letter !!???

Riya was not surprised and yet she was. She was rather shocked. She found it hard to hold back her tears. Just because she had raised her voice against harassment, she had pay for it with her job. Her hard work had gone down the drain. She did not know what to do and how to face the situation. She took her bag and as she was leaving, she crossed Deepak’s cabin. She walked up to him. Snapping her fingers at the man who couldn’t look her in the eye, said to him. – "I WILL SEE TO IT, THAT YOU PAY FOR THIS".

She cried a lot, throughout her journey back home and till she could cry no more. And when she finally stopped crying she began to think. She was filled with rage. Why should I pay for his misdoings with MY job? he should !!!

I should not let this repeat. I should act. She sat herself down and wrote to her management and explained her grievances. I do not want the job back, but I want justice, she wrote. She didn't expect a reply, but she intended to expose the wicked man.

Couple of days later, she received a call from office. It was a colleague. "Riya, the MD wants to see  you this evening, he as flown down just to meet you , so please be present," he said. Riya didn't know what to expect of this.

She arrived at the office, angry yet confident. In the meeting room she saw Deepak, trying his best to justify himself to the MD. She walked in and greeted the MD, sat down and explained her plight. The MD, belonging to a respectable, conservative family, patiently listened to Riya, at the end of which he said, "I shall scrutinize this, and if I feel Ms. Riya is right, then Mr. Deepak, you WILL have to resign."

Deepak froze when he heard this. He had worked for the company for 15 years and now a newcomer would get him sacked ?? He coudn’t believe his ears!

Riya said to the MD, "Sir, I have proof of loose talks ! Fortunately I had my phone in my hand one day when Mr. Deepak was torturing me with his talks and it suddenly struck me, so I pressed the record button ! You may listen to the entire conversation. This is enough proof of harassment !

Deepak wasn’t expecting this. What !!! he said. The MD interrupting him, "Yes Ms Riya, please send it to me, I shall definitely listen to it."

Deepak realizing that he had no defence and that Ms Riya had proof against him, embarrassed and caught unaware, got up from his seat and left the office in a haste. Riya was given back her job respectfully!

Sounds filmy, doesn't it ? It definitely does! Believe me, this is a true story and every bit of it is true. There’s more to it, which most women who have undergone harassment will be able to relate to. But I had to cut down on the length so couldn’t keep it detailed.

Karma, they say, has no menu and serves you what you deserve, well this is the fastest I have seen Karma work. Funny how, a man who worked with the company for 15 years has to lose out to a girl who was a new recruit, it implies that everyone has to pay for their misdoings – EVERYONE !!!

Just because someone has power or money, it wouldn’t exempt them from Karma. And sometimes maybe we shouldn’t wait for Karma to act, but raise our voice, fight against injustice and take no crap. Riya is back to office now and Mr. Deepak sacked, shamed in front of all the colleagues and Riya is praised and appreciated for her guts.

I would have loved to introduce Ms. Riya to you all, as it is not often that we come across a person as brave as her, who fought for her rights in a new country and without support and won the battle, but am afraid that would be invasion of her privacy and hence I have chosen not to. Well ! All is well that ends well. Hats off to you Riya ! I couldn’t stop myself from writing about your brave deed. May your story inspire victims of harassment!

All people must follow like Ms. Riya but it is not certain that you will succeed. For e.g. Same thing happened to my life also when I was Seminarian in small parish, I told to the Archbishop about the misdeeds of the priest towards the girls but it happened opposite way, I mean they supported the priest not me. So I have to quit seminary.
It is a true and real story but it can’t expose to the media or public. Because I am catholic

"everyone has to pay for their misdoings – EVERYONE !!! " only if the harassed bold and courageous enough to fight and challenge the harasser. Most people do the same as Riya did earlier that simplr cry and give up.
Only the recording saved her that moment is a real tool for everyone to have that cell phone with recording button.
Keep it up. Nice awareness article ( By the way, your metro friend I can find her through your identity at Jebel Ali Station )

Now that two of us – Mr Bhandarkar and I - have revealed each other’s witty side, I eagerly await from you a Bible quote on humour and laughter, which are a dozen-odd in the Holy book. Let me quote this one for you, not from the Holy Bible (don’t waste time looking for it), which Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar said: “make haste slowly”.

    Dear Shiva ,
    Thank u for ur comment:)

I would like to say that some terminations maybe due to pressure by influential employees of the company, mere need to downsize with not much credit given to the work done by the employees - Not all terminations can be justified. Right?

Like i already mentioned, i have not elaborated a lot,for want of keeping the article short & interesting , rather than boring the readers with unnecessary detailing. I just highlighted the essence of the story.

Riya was a new joinee like i have pointed out. I have not stressed on the fact that She hadn't completed probation (I guess its self explanatory). When in probation a notice need not be served for termination as per laws.

I have also not elaborated on what followed post termination - where Riya threatened to go to the police, fearing which Deepak paid her a compensation (to shut her up) , the cheque which she retained without en-cashing and presented to the MD on the day of discussion - which proved in favour of Riya - the very fact that he offered her compensation for termination proved he was guilty.

You are right , not many care for another's feelings , if they did , an innocent girl like Riya wouldn't have to go through harassment, embarrassment and termination.

Thank u Shiva for your good wishes. I appreciate. :)

    Hi Linda,

I was terminated by my previous co., on my reporting managers appraisal report . Riys is terminated very next day on deepak report? on what ground HR did decide?? does it not require past/present work records? no warning letters? is there no other role of HR other than recruiting or firing ?? why did not riya lodge complaint to dubai police is she has very proof of deepkas nonsense and file a case of molestation ??? dubai police first take deepak in to custody? and very immediate termination of riya's services itself a proof that riya opposed to deepak, so got terminated. Deepak maharaj would have been jailed for 6 months and got permanent ban to come to UAE and started a new life in Australia... I am sure riya must have thought her name and reputation will be spoilt. Excuse me sister , noone bothers. now deepak must have got an another job. You would have also got an another job. Tit for tat is very important. now a days there no important for ones feeling or emotions. Anyways, riya you got your job back. Still, love your job not your co. Best wishes

Well written....Linda you are a promising budding author. Have heard of such kind of real happenings which you have depicted in your writeup, in this part of the world where we live. But, the real thing which I liked was how the victim 'Riya' fought back and was able to obtain justice in her case, which we seldom hear in these kind of instances. Keep writing more & all the best!

Dear Mr Bhadarkar, I got the gist of your comments which is absolute crap.
    1) You attract someone, get married and stuck for life, leaving you no opportunity to practice the formulas again.
    2) You woo a kangaroo and sell it to a zoo and with the money earned, buy books that do not give false notions.
    3) Why did your friends ask you? Perhaps you’re P.H.D. I do not know. Why does your barb carry a ‘mob’? An intelligent person who reads books that do not give false notions writes single handedly and not by conferring with friends, which in turn may result in false notions.
    4) Let alone reading the cited book, I have never come across it physically, albeit I am aware of its existence through a book catalogue. It was recommended wittily.
    5) My comments were merely meant to bring laughs to the readers, even without offending Mr Stephen from Melbourne, which is why I addressed him as my brother. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that Mr Bhandarkar (wordily) and his friends (hush-hush from behind the scene) would react. Trust the matter ends with this.

"HOW TO ATTRACT ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE – The Smart Guide to Flirting by Susan Rabin (written by a woman). Many have confessed that after practicing the tips from this book, they are stuck with their spouses for life."
    Sir Ivanaa - Some points.
    1. Whole thing not clear. Stuck with spouses for life means what?
This book and it's formula is successful only once -aa? It can't ensure perineal success aa??..Usually men want to flirt or whatever after marriage -Is it not?
So what use this book? Not me- but many of my friends ask me?
2.What book that by Susan Rabin?
She is a P.H.D. in it? I am warning all-Never go by any of these books. Use your 'own technique'-You may succeed.
Never by reading such books! My experience-I am telling you -O.k.-
Once I read that book-'Lie Flat and Get Away' Some fella who laughed all the way to the bank by writing this crap! I read it, tried and 'fell flat' in the first attempt! Now I follow my own instincts, coach and all that with considerable success. Not many are aware of this capability of mine.
    3. You also write 'wooing kangaroos' is easier and all that. Okay-You woo and the Kangaroo falls in your 'Net'-Then what next?
Tell me? You'll play golf with it or billiards -aa? See a hard fought victory gives satisfaction-Is it not?
All this false notions are bound to there in you,if you read 'wrong books' by Susans and all that.
Cheerio Ivanaa Sir- and I do sincerely hope you get the gist.

My brother Stephen from Melbourne, I’m curious as to why you inquired about Deepak’s whereabouts in Australia, which interestingly rhymes well with Riya, the heroine of this true story. To gain some tips on wooing women? If yes, don’t ever approach the failures. Instead, I would recommend a book to you: HOW TO ATTRACT ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE – The Smart Guide to Flirting by Susan Rabin (written by a woman). Many have confessed that after practicing the tips from this book, they are stuck with their spouses for life. A real world Fevicol solution! I’m sure if Deepak reads my comments, he will most certainly read this book before joining another company where he might stay until retirement. Lastly, Deepak in Australia will be the happiest person on Earth because he would soon find out that wooing Kangaroos is easier than wooing women.

Absolutely right Mr. Geoffrey , This entire story from start to end happened within a duration of just about 4 months, I guess that explains the title of my Article.

Most women keep mum about embarrassing situations like these and prefer giving up rather than fighting against this rampant issue - Again maybe because not all are lucky enough like Riya - yet , in my opinion , all should fight back , regardless of whether justice prevails or not and not suffer silently.

As you rightly mentioned Linda, notions like Karma, destiny, fate etc are highly debatable. In some instances such as the one you have presented here we see scores getting settled with immediate effect. But we also come across umpteen examples where they go unsettled, even if they do, not as fast as that you have cited in this story. Or may be as believed in Hindu philosophy, Karma of one’s actions in this birth yields consequences in the next. Applying SWOT analysis to this story (just for laughs!), hadn’t virtuousness been the Strength of Riya, she would’ve fallen for the Weakness of Deepak and seen an Opportunity in the absence of her hubby and rest of the life would prove to be a Threat for her. And in a way this is also Karma, consequences of one’s actions!

Mr. Geoffrey, good point :) I have changed the material facts , as I thought that the essence of the article lay on the fight for justice and the outcome. Names , Nationality , Profession and some material facts have been changed or hidden to protect privacy as my friend was a little apprehensive when i showed her this article in the draft, post which we discussed and prepared the final copy.
As you pointed out , maybe Karma would have acted in a different way - but still acted , that is definitely a debatable issue
Thanks a lot for your feedback. I appreciate. :)

    R.Bhandrakar ,
Thank you Sir for your appreciation. As this site is accessed by a large number of people all over the world as we all know , I had to really change the material facts so as to protect Riya's privacy by not giving out the real sensitive issues, I have given out the bare minimum , as I did not want people to guess easily - I have changed her profession - and assigned her my own. If i were Riya , i would have definitely taken the credit - proudly :) 'Deepak' - a very randomn name that came to my mind when i was putting down this article - name changed.

I shall definitely try to pen down more in the future.
Thanks a lot for the encouragement ! :)

Well written Lin. All the best for many more articles. Kudos to Riya and to Woman Power... I wish and pray no woman go through such humiliation and torture and that she finds all the strength to fight back.

Congratulations Riya, for being cautious and managing to get the culprit punished and retaining your job with guts.
In fact, the hunter never asks the victim (prey) that ‘can I kill you’ or ‘can you be my delicious meal’?
If the female with shyness, weakness or wish accommodates the male it is called as with consent, to have fun and enjoyment and if the male trespasses without her consent (by force) it is called transgression, where he has to face the bitter consequences.
We are living in a faster and dynamic world with full of unimaginable amazing, uncertain and chameleon type of incidents.

Just wondering if Karma would act in a similar way if it were a UAE national or a westerner (not an immigrant like Deepak) in Deepak’s place or would Riya dare respond in a similar manner (second part of the story, fighting for injustice) under those circumstances.

    Well written Linda,
Very much in touch with reality. This article will be of great help to those silent sufferers who do not know what to do in those awkward situations. This article will also be a jolt for those shameless perpetrators. Keep writing more.

title 'When Karma Worked Real Fast...' seems tailor made. Karma need not be imposed but it rebounds itself in the matter of time limit to gravity once crime committed. I believe 'Deepak' name is chosen to suit the story for/of 'Karma'

Linda,Thanks for sharing this which gives the below messages to all.
    1. Truth gives immense courage when you take shelter under it.
    2. Riya used this shelter effectively.
    3. It is always easy to preach but difficult to practice. Riya preached through her action.
    4. Boldness has to be used for good reason.

    Wish you all the best,
    regards
    Rao

Very well written Linda Riya ...Oops! I mean Linda Alexander Pereira...
Wonder who this 'Deepak' was? You say let's 'refer' to him? Is his name too changed to protect his privacy?...
And Yep! Karma works overtime sometimes and sometimes seems like it never does. In any case there's no escaping it though.
Do not limit it to one story. You see so many things happen around you and should be able to pen about them also.
Wishing you and your hubby all the best.
