Then and Now....

January 3, 2014

Then and Now....

I greeted my friends
Said ‘Hi, Good morning’ to two
One said GM, another Gd Mng
Good wishes in words very few

Less visits, almost no letters
We are in jet age, short of time
Now we say things in brief
Lengthy chats seem like crime

There were teachers then
Who guided as they taught
Parents were our Gods
We loved and adored them a lot

What’s age now? Who are elders?
They were just born much before
Why listen to them anyway?
Any advice from them is just another bore

Earlier they said toil hard
For that is the way to success
The more you strive, the better
And there is simply no excess

Now we can buy marks or a degree
Nothing of late seems bad
As long as I play with money
All around me are so glad

What’s with the haste, I wonder
Let’s be calm and once look around
It is time to hold the reins
Let’s not be time-bound

The flower blooms, the butterfly grows
All things have their own pace
Life is beautiful when lived in peace
Let’s live really, not run a sad race.

Dear Deepa , I loved your poem. Just shows how times have changed. With all our technology which simplifies so many of our routine jobs , we have even less time or perhaps don't see the need to interact with other human beings. Soon the words - Manners , Greetings etc might become obsolete. Best wishes

Dear Deepa, thank you for this great poem. You are right. I would like to say something about a meaning of life, we need today so much. Our world is changing day by day. Technology has changed our environment at top speed in a way that millions of people cannot cope with the change. What to do? I would like to say a little bit about a meaning of life. With a meaning we can lead a better life. Human beings are the only beings that can put their own existence into question and the biggest quest in an individual´s life is to find meaning and purpose and the questions about meaning of human life are age old.
Meanings are at the core of our experience and also at the core of whatever we do. It is only through meanings that we make sense of our existence. In life we find meaning through a sense of purpose which makes life worthwhile. Meaning in life is not just a theoretical or philosophical construct, but it has a bearing on human health and well being. While pondering about what makes life meaningful, several perspectives in the literature could be found, especially in the literature covering philosophy and existential psychology. In an attempt to formulate a single definition of meaning, one may ask that the essence of meaning is? But a single generic answer to this question is not possible to find. For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general, but rather the specific meaning of a person´s life at a given moment.

Meaning serves a number of important functions in human lives. Firstly, meaning provides a purpose for our lives. Secondly, it furnishes values or standards by which to judge our actions. Thirdly, it gives us a sense of control over the events in our life. Lastly, it provides us with self-worth. When people are unable to find meanings that they once had, they become distressed. Many emotional problems result from a failure to find meaning in life and can be resolved only through finding something to make life worth living.
With a meaning of life , life is rich and fulfilling. The environment changes and we adapt to it, our meaning can change, but we should have a meaning of life. It is one of the greatest gifts we can have.

    Best regards

    Hi Deepa,
Such a coincidence, me being a daily church goer, just this morning I was discussing with our priest this very issue.
Very sad and hurting the way things have changed, just no concern/respect/ gratitude...
In fact it hurts me to watch a teacher who had tutored the elder sibling (in a family I know) and now tutoring the younger one. Not a hello or Good Morning from the elder one to the teacher...
    Very Very Sad.
    Kind Regards

Short and sweet, the true facts of Then and Now, unbelievable changes
The things never dreamt before have become a possibility and reality today
Land lines have become mobile and www and the smart phones smarter
Just a click has replaced telegraph and telex, email couriers tons in minute
Amazing, incredible, extraordinary, unusual, unimaginable, day time dream

Distant world is reachable but not the family members and next door neighbours
Faces can be seen only on face book, making impossible to see face to face
Fast track, fast food, fast decision, fast action and reaction, faster dynamic life
Fashion, style, readymade, short cut, gamble, competition and comparison
Love, hate, respect, putdowns, new and old, high, low, with wide differences

Transportation and Communication – Then and Now, Progress and Problems
Mobile technology revolution, hero of the new economy, century and millennium
Automobile evolution pulling on with ages old concept of slow and steady race
Telecom sector service is instant, cheaper, anywhere, anytime and almost free
Surface transport sector looks like a curse, doing sacrifice and facing problems
Most of the family budget and country revenue being burnt on costly oil and fuel
The reward is unhealthy pollutions, high costs and inadequate transport services

Mobile revolution (amazing benefits), automobiles evolution (severe problems)
The need of the moment is to have a rapid revolution of surface transport sector
It is essential to have a peaceful society, stable economy and clean environment
Perhaps our ambitious dreams come true, if supported the innovative idea
To see a revolutionary change in automobiles sector, making a world of difference
