Friendship: A Special Bond

August 4, 2013

(Friendship Day)

“Best friends are those rare people who can understand all your troubles by just looking in your eyes can soothe your fears with a simple hug, can make you laugh when all you want to do is cry.” Friendship Day is a day devoted to this set of people in each individual’s life.

Friendship is the most beautiful relationship of humankind. A relationship made without any oppression or bondage and is truly unconditional. Friendship Day celebrates has been celebrating this amazing bond for more than 75 years now and this year in India it will be celebrated on the 4th of August, the first Sunday of the month.

The idea of Friendship Day was initiated in USA and as the popularity and success of Friendship Day become known several other countries adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to friends. Today, Friendship Day is enthusiastically celebrated by several countries across the world, but where it all began is still a mystery.

One of the many stories says that “In the year 1935, the USA government killed a man on 1st Saturday of the month of August and the next day which was a Sunday, his friend committed suicide in his memory. Thus the USA government decided and declared the first Sunday of every August as Friendship Day as a tribute to their friendship.”

Another source claims, “The United States Congress, in 1935, proclaimed first Sunday of August as the National Friendship Day. Since then, celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event.”

It has also been said that Friendship Day was originally promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, who intended to celebrate Friendship Day as a commercial gimmick to promote greetings cards, and if that's true, this promotional strategy has definitely turned out to be the most successful one till date.

Globally, Friendship Day is acknowledged as an annual event, whereas in terms of India if we have a closer perspective there is a mixed response on the celebration of this day. The younger generation in the Indian society are keen towards welcoming such celebrations from the west while there is a certain amount of constraint from the elders comparatively. A few political parties having strong traditional ideologies also do not approve of such celebrations.

Despite imposition of limitations by a certain set of people, the popularity and enthusiasm of celebrating such days has remained unshaken. Friendship Day is celebrated mainly by tying a friendship bands and have a good time with close friends.

Friendship Day may have begun for any reason, but the success of the day validates this marvelous relationship between friends. This Friendship Day, let’s dedicate this one single day to our friends who have been there for us and make them feel precious.

Happy Friendship Day!!!

Friendships can have a major impact on our health and well-being, but it is not always easy to build or maintain friendships. Understand the importance of friendships in your life and what you can do to develop and nurture friendships.
Good friends are good for your health. Friends can help celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. Friends prevent loneliness and give you a chance to offer needed companionship, too. Friends can also increase your sense of belonging and purpose, boost your happiness, reduce stress, improve your self-worth, help one to cope with traumas, such as divorce, serious illness, job loss or the death of loved ones, encourage to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as excessive drinking or lack of exercise.
Many adults find it hard to develop new friendships or keep up existing friendships. Friendships may take a back seat to other priorities, such as work or caring for children or old parents. You and your friends may have grown apart due to the changes in your lives or interests. Or maybe you have moved to a new community and have not yet found a way to meet people.
Developing and maintaining good friendships takes effort. The enjoyment and comfort friendship can provide, however, makes the investment worthwhile. It is never too late to build new friendships or reconnect with old friends. Investing time in making friends and strengthening friendships can pay off in better health and a brighter outlook for years to come.

    Best regards

True friendship is always a two way road, but 95% of our friends will be with us in good times, and when we are faced with crisis, especially financial crisis, they will desert us like total strangers. But a true friend will be turned as a brother in times of crisis.

    Dear Sandhya Soans
Have you by any chance seen the 'Men will be Men' advertisement of
SeaGrams?? See it and you will understand. Men nowadays find it hard to remember their 'Engagement Day','Wedding Day', ('Wife's Birthday') and all! May because it was their last 'Independence Day' or something like that, I do not know. Then how can one remember this 'Friendship Day' which originated due to some suicide and all that!
    Tell you a secret though.
Just because there is no 'bonding'
and only because of that friendship survives. Why? Simply because when there is no 'bond', then there is no 'binding'. You are free as an individual. The moment you are 'bonded' means that you are hampered rather tied.
That's why 'friendship' thrives more often than not in comparison to relationship. Just because there
is no bond...'special or whatsoever'. Right. Got it?

Making a million friends is not a MIRACLE.The miracle is to make A FRIEND who will stand by you when millions are against you.....
