December 21, 2012 - Is the world going to end? This is a billion dollar question today. Is the human race going to perish totally from the face of the earth? Is this only media hype or is there any truth behind it? The young, the elderly and the old, all seem to be engrossed in the mystery of December 21, 2012...Doomsday!
December 21 being the last date in the Mayan long count calendar, prediction about the planet X or Nibiru colliding the earth, rumours about the planetorial allignment in the milky way galaxy- have left even the intellectuals in a bay of confusion.
Daily newspapers tell us of the number of patients who have postponed their surgeries till the 21, the delay in the marriages, the rising number of visitors, in the temples and in other places of worship, increasing popularity of astrologers etc only tell us the gravity of effect, of the predictions of December 21, on the life of a common man.
What then is this December 21? Did the Mayans have any insight into the future of the earth? Like many other prophesies of Nostradamus, will this too be a reality?
Is the world going to end?
Mayan Calendar:
Mayans was one of the ancient civilizations (2000 BCE-250 CE), who were the natives of Sothern Mexico and Northern Central America. They were well advanced in art architecture, mathematical and astronomical systems and had a well developed written language. Mayans created calendars and they believed that the calendars were originally given to them by 4 original prophets and are very certain about celestial origins of their sacred time science. The Mayan long count calendar comes to halt on 21 December, 2012. According to them, with this date earth enters a new ' Creation Cycle'
Now the Mayan prediction in no way clearly tells us that they meant to tell us about the end of the world.
Prophesy of Nostradam:
Popularly known as the prophet of doom, Nostradam lived in the 16 century. His predictions about Napoleon, Hitler, use of Atomic bombs, presence of an evil Pope in the Catholic Church and many such prophesies known to have come true. One of his predictions is also about the end of the material world in 2012.
According to his argument:
On December 21, 2012 as the Mayan calendar comes to halt, planet X or Nibiru, a planet found by the Sumerians will collide against the earth( though some say that this theory is given by ZechariaSitchin) and thus there will be destruction.
His prediction standing in line with Mayan calculations, has indeed added spice to the whole issue.
Indian Mythologies and Astrology:
Most of the Hindu scholarly works do not tell us about world’s end in 2012.However only one advocate about 2012 among the gurus in India is the controversial Kalki Bhavan who claims that 2012 will be the beginning of the Golden age of Enlightenment. The main source of Kalki Bhavan's claim is the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. According to them, all should become enlightened by 2012 in order to escape the impending disaster.
NASA Clarifies:
A few months ago an e-mail was circulated around saying that NASA has predicted a total black out on December 23-25, which indeed caused a certain amount of havoc, taking to considerations the already existing confusions.
Later NASA on its website made its position very clear. Some of the clarifications are:
- World will not end in 2012
- There will neither be a total black out nor planotorial allignment, this December.
- There is no basis for the predicted collision of Nibiru with planet Earth. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist.
- All in all NASA takes the stand, that all claims of Doomsday are scientifically baseless.
Zeta Talk:
Nancy Leider, a self proclaimed psychic healer, the owner of the webpage – Zeta talk, seem to be creating all the hype about the Doomsday. Initially the site announced that 1995 January will see the Doomsday, which was later postponed to May 2003 and then to December 2012. In her opinion, the planed Nibiru is already heading towards the Earth and she is in touch with Anunnaki the aliens from that planet. Thus she claims the destruction is inevitable. She also blames NASA for leading the world towards doom despite knowing the reality and hiding it from masses.
Conclusion:
The present media hype seems to be a direct war between science and predictions based on ancient wisdom and faith. I am not interested in taking stand on either sides. Let's take a personal opinion on what to believe and what not.... if that's too hard, let's wait till 21 December, 2012...!!!
