Philosophy of Life...

February 16, 2012

What is life? It is a mystery. The famous Philosopher Gabriel Marcel would define mystery as that thing which I am part of. Life is definitely part of me. At times it thrills, at times it satisfies, at times it showcases the greatest of my gifts while at some other times it even pins me down or hangs me upon my weaknesses. Life is that which ushers itself with a cry and takes its leave with a moan. All this gives life its meaning.

Life is popularly associated with movement, for that which does not move is suspected as though dead. Science also upholds the layman’s notion of life as activity. Bishop Fulton Sheen would go one step further in defining life as an imminent activity. The lowest forms of beings are minerals and chemicals formed deep inside the earth. Needless to say they that are part of the mineral kingdom, belong to the non-living. To these activity is supplied from outside. For living things activity is supplied from within. A plant grows from within. It has the power of generation, it can grow mysteriously by itself and it can nourish itself. But a plant is made to remain fixed in one place. The greater the imminent activity, the greater the life. An animal has a higher life than a plant, the beast a fuller life than the grass it eats, so the bird than the pollen it gathers. Therefore animals have a double imminent activity, that of movement and the other of sense perception. But animals are bound to their instincts.

Moving one step higher in the hierarchy of all created things is the creation of human beings. Human beings have a higher imminence of thinking and willing. What makes human life special is the capacity for knowledge and for love. A thought in the mind of a human being is equally spiritual as is that activity of an animal towards generating its kind. The Psalmist has wonderfully said that life consists in knowledge. Others are doomed to sameness; humans on the other hand are gifted with creativity.

Above all things, we have the capacity to commune with the Ultimate that is good, true and beautiful. A stone will fall with the law of gravity, an animal will be a slave to his instincts where as a human being has got a free choice to make, to do or not to do all that lies in front of it. This choice comes from within. We are co-creators. We have the right to make anything as our food, the power to harness the waterfall, to even treat nature as we like. But how can we become perfect? Neither minerals, nor plants or animals or even human beings can be looked up to as models of perfection. Perfect life is that which is free and independent of everything else. That is what I would call God.

Life is God’s greatest gift to us and what we do out of it is our gift, given back to God. The glory of God is man and woman, fully human and fully alive, happy and holy. Life is full of experiences and the only thing that we have to do is to pursue these experiences awaiting us. That is the imminence. Don’t we find so much meaning? Yes, Life is wonderful and worth living.

The comment coming from a Doctor absolutely rediculous who is supposed to give life to living and making such a dumb statement. I did not expect this is from a qualified person that too doctor by profession who is supposed to defy death and make money out of dying people!!!!!

The person I mentioned in my
previous comment had a lot of
thoughts written by many great people on his office wall. "yesterday is history-
tomorrow is a mystery and today is the day" was one of them.

We destroy our peace of life by
    crying about the unchangable past,
and constantly worry about the unforeseen and mysterious future thus destroying our peace
of life today. Life has to be
taken one day at a time, and try to
enjoy the most every day through
    any possible wholesome manner-make
other's life happier too. That kind
of a lifestyle, when we look back, can be called "successful life". Those people who are working too hard and restless for
building up something perishable in the world, without enjoying a day with peace and laughter are going to be the
most miserable people in the world
and their philosophy of life was
    totally messed up without knowing
    the proper priorities of life.

Nice article! one thing is to live the day to one's best and take the day and life as a precious gift from God and enjoy the day with freedom but certain restrictions to be followed from the religion one follow then one feel to be happy to live everday as worth living with God's blessing.

Article and all comments are appreciated, many give many definitions to LIFE, but according to me
"LIFE IS A LONG LONG PREPARATION FOR DEATH" and it doesn't carry any meaning but we should make our life meaningful.
If we are capable of living meaningful life then Life'll be wonderful and worth living.

What is the meaning of life for innocent people blown up in suicide bombings, washed in tsunami, burried in earthquake, not to mention war, famine, flood, cold and heat. If one lives happily ever is LIFE? That is why real life is LIFE AFTER DEATH even there are reabirths. There are answers in religious thoughts and phylosophy but the truth is only ONE and that is GOD IS TRUTH AND LIFE.

In my point of view life is not a mystery. There are human beings who live in the developed and others in developing countries.
Up to now people in Europe enjoy a pretty high standard of living with a good working social welfare system, with medical insurances, unemployment benefits, pensions, a liberal media, excellent education, an excellent medical health system
People in western democracies are used to a liberal constitution, free elections. All that gives human beings the opportunity to determine their own way of life.
It has been a long way for people all over Europe to live in freedom and prosperity. Life is not a mystery for people in Europe. Life consists of hard work, pressure and of course mixed with a high standard of living.
For example unemployed people receive unemployment benefits in Germany, their rent is paid even their medical insurance.
Going to school is obligatory for all children till the age of 18 and there are no school fees to pay.
People enjoy liberal rights as never before in our modern history.

But on the other hand million of people are looking desperately for a meaning of life. Without a meaning of life more and more people are addicted to alcohol, drugs, tablets.

The question is what does make human beings happy and satisfied? Though people can lead a life in western societies without a daily fight how to survive there is a tremendous increase of psychological disorders, depressions and other mental illnesses.

All religions offer human beings a meaning of life, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam offer so much.

Living in a secular world is sometimes difficult and I would like to express my own experiences.

Without having a deep meaning of life, my life would be harsh.

Even when I went through hell and I experienced that in my life I found comfort by reading The Bible, attend Holy Mass, prayers and worship and I practise meditation and yoga.

All that has been giving me calm and inner peace and the energy and power to see the need of the poor.

When we share with the poor and see others that makes our life rich.

All that gives me a meaning of life.

    Best regards

Yashwanth, mangalore, your first comment "What we see in nature....." is Einstein's quotation and has little to do with this article.

    @Dolphy,Mangalore,

Whenever any good or bad things happen to an individual, that individual should think that she/he is not the first person or will not be the last person on this earth to experience it. If one thinks that way, then she/he will not lose heart when things don't go right in life and will not be overly excited when life looks good.

    Very interesting article, such
articles must appear in the news
papers to get attention from the
"blindly marching" generation without knowing the real purpose of life.

The last paragraph was very touching. The vast majority of the people in the world work hard and double hard by forgetting their homes-health and recreation
    simply to create wealth. Finally,
those kinds of people will regret
    about the chronicles of wasted
    years.

I asked my friend 25 years back
when I met him for the first time, how many children you have?. He said "children are very expensive" then he made a sound and three cats came down and sat in his lap.
He said that the cats are his
    children. Now, with millions of
dollars worth of real estate and
physically weak, he looks like the
    most miserable person in life.
A lot of people are qualified to
travel with him in the life journey
wihtout any definite purpose in life, other than money-real estate-
    gold-stocks and bonds etc........

Life is amazing..but what is the meaning of suffering & pain. why human being suffers. people who have undergone pain & suffering know the meaning of it. this is what is the other side of coin/life.

all said & done.. the question arises why the suffering is to me? there is no answer ? just wait & watch till your suffering ends ? or be positive & face the life. it is very hard truth.

What we see in nature is a magnificent structure that we can comprehend only very imperfectly, and that must fill a thinking person with a feeling of “humility.” This is a genuinely religious feeling that has nothing to do with mysticism.

Just wondering if this definition of life holds good for famished populations of countries such as Ethiopia and Somalia, millions of innocent victims of wars and terror activities, newborn babies with incurable diseases - just to name a few.
