Tukaram Omble: The Man who Caught Kasab

November 26, 2011

Indians and the world know Kasab. The man who shook Mumbais roots. But did any one try to know how Kasab got delayed in escaping and was caught by the Police? How well do we respect the Indian Police, do we have any idea how Kasab was chased?

I hope you all know 'Ajmal Kasab'?  Let me introduce all Mumbaikaras and Indians world wide to a Man in KHAKI ASI - Tukaram Omble. We have never heard of this person. Imagine how popular Kasab is, and how we care about the person who is responsible for catching him.

This is a fact, and a real incident that happened. On the day terrorists attacked Mumbai, ASI Tukaram Omble, 48, was on night duty. At 12.30 am on 27 November he had called his family and spoken to them.

Omble's senior told him to take up position on Marine Drive on Wednesday night, after the news of firings at Leopold Cafe, Oberoi and Taj Hotels came in. Around 12.45 am, he got an alert on his walkie-talkie that two terrorists had hijacked a Skoda car and were heading for Girgaum Chowpatty. Just minutes later, the Skoda whizzed past him.

Omble jumped on to his motorcycle and chased the car. A team from DB Marg police station was setting up a barricade at the chowpatty signal. As the car approached the signal, the terrorists opened fire on the police, but had to reduce speed because of the barricades. Omble overtook the Skoda and stopped in front of it, forcing the driver of the car to swerve right and hit the divider. With the terrorists momentarily distracted, Omble sprang toward one of them, Ajmal Kasab, and gripped the barrel of the AK47 rifle with both hands. With the barrel pointing towards Omble, Kasab pulled the trigger, hitting Omble in the abdomen. Omble collapsed, but held on to the gun till he lost consciousness, which likely stopped Kasab from shooting others.

Now you got him, right?? He was the Lion heart who sacrificed himself to save many lives and catch Kasab alive.

Do you know where his family is? Do you know what his family does? Nobody wants to know that!! Just try to compare what Govt. spend for Omble's family and what govt. spends for the mighty terrorist Kasab. Shouldn't we feel ashamed??

What has Indian Government done to his family?  I don’t think he was even rewarded for his life he dedicated country.  Omble should be awarded the posthumous Bharat Ratna and his name be etched in golden letters for future generations who may know that it does not take someone big to do a great thing for the nation as Omble clearly did. Indian government still waits for so many court sessions to prove that he is not a terrorist who killed her own sons and daughters.

Personally, I feel I would have cut him into pieces and thrown him to the Indian dogs, so that not a single person would mess with Indians.

While nothing can compensate for the bravery and loss of life of Mr Ombule, i believe that there has been reasonable efforts from the govt and society to support his family. I was a part of a team who contributed around 25 Lakh rupees to the braveheart’s family, which included 12 lakhs in LIC pension scheme in mrs tara tukaram ombale's name, and 3 lakhs FD each in his 2 unmarried daughters names(bharati and vaishali). This happened in Jan 2009. At that time itself the family had informed us that one of the daughters was given govt job, and other daughter a teaching job. they had mentioned that the govt compensation promised was also received.

I guess other people had also come forward to help the family. The bigger point is how do we make our people and soldiers safer, how do we ensure we minimize loss of lives, the civil society has a large role to play in that. Spreading awareness, reducing hatred, helping each other in times of need, all will help. We need to step out of the shadows of writing emotional mails to taking action when needed.

We have thousands of unsung Omble in our police force who had sacrificed their lives for the betterment of the society. Tukaram Omble a true soldier took all the bullets from Kasab's AK-47 on his stomach to save the others. Like the Mumbai police, the staff of Taj Hotel, and the general manager Mr. Karambir Kang were well appreciated for their desire to protect guests without regard to personal safety.
Like the TATAs, our Police Department too should take good care of the families of the martyred police officials.

Very well said Mr Chris Misquith.we need more courage's people like you to bring out the truth. Salute to the great Tukaram Omble for showing real courage and daring to tackle an armed Terrorist. What a brave man!Instead of spending crore's on keeping the Terrorist Kasab alive the government should have taken more care of Mr Omble's family and portrait him as a real hero so as to encourage others.we are running scarce of people like Mr Omble in this country. Everyone is busy minding their own business. when someone displays such a daring act to give up his life to save other and for the benefit of our country he should be considered a martyr and be awarded the highest reward.
Thank You. Mr Tukaram Omble. Without your courage we would not have a CLUE.

Omble has done a thing that no body would believe or get a chance to do. Saying hats up to a brave heart would be cheap.... and the colonial mentality of India would think of paying him buck-sis for he belongs to a middle class family. The govt. can spend 50 crores on an in-jailed terrorist but can not think beyond some file related activities to get Omble for proper treatment. This is governmentalitiy.
I would wait when such mentality would be changed.....

  • Thomas Pascal Andrade, Valencia / Toronto

    Sun, Nov 27 2011

Omble is the unsung hero of India, who brought laurels not only to the police force but also to the whole nation. Indian police are not provided with sophisticated equipment that is easy to carry and the cops who went to catch Kasab and his associate, fought with them empty handed. Despite, they did not hesitate to face the fully armed terrorists risking their lives. This heroism has definitely uplifted the tarnished image of our police force, which is known for corruption, favouritism, etc.

It is unfortunate that the Indian Government is still keeping Kasab alive and spending taxpayers’ money on him, which is estimated to be Rs. 50 crore so far. The more we keep him alive, the more crores we would spend on him. Wake up Indian politicians you have better things to do than spending public money on a terrorist.

Dear Daiji readers, Thank you so much for your comments.
Many Indians do not like the political career or say hate politics!!! I at times wonder as a young generation what do we do? It’s the same old policies created in 1947 or 1950 we follow. Some policies should be changed as days have changed a lot and we cannot be still Gandhi or Ambedkar. We should show Sardar Patel attitude for the above Example. How could we be involved in these changes?
At times Indian youth is in dilemma, who to shake hands with Anna Hazare or political parties. Definitely we need a change that can make sure everything is accountable. If we compare us to other countries in the world, we are the wealthiest among all. We have brilliant technology, powerful business men and women. We Indians have very good brain than any one in world. But when it comes to terrorism, why do we pet them? Can we not terminate anyone who attacks our own MOTHERLAND. Imagine Cores to corers spent on these guys, where are they getting the finance from? Its we, who pay it.
My request to Indian Govt is, Let Supreme court take this case and TERMINATE KASAB!!!

Tukaram's sacrifice is supreme. No doubt about it.On the other side, we cannot come to terms with the facts that Mumbai police which costs around 500 to 600 crores every year to the exchequer could not get their act together in the initial critical hours and stop the mayhem caused by the ten brainwashed mercenaries.Their incompetence was totally shameful. It is regretful to notice that the writer has vented his personal emotions in the last sentence of his writeup. It is unfortunate that what happened after the capture of the named terrorist. Agreed that, it is very painful to see that the terrorist is still alive but we are a civilised nation unlike our neighbour.

This story I knew very well bcz I still feel sorry for the ATS chief Karkare, assist commissioner Kamthe n encounter specialist Salaskar These there where in same car when Kasab shot them inside car before they could get down n pull the revolver near GT hospital. God knows when the court will hang him. Kasab drove on police car pulling all the three out along with his partner and there was another wounded constable on rear seat. At Metro theatre he fired at public n at Nariman point changed to Skoda car. Thukaram must be honored with award n his family should be given house n better facilities. Those who discuss abt Pawar so seriously in parliament just for a slap forget those who took bullets on their chest. Shame to UPA n Maharastra govt.

Really a great hero. We should feel proud that such people do exist in INDIA. Can we jointly do something for the family of Tukaram Omble. This can be done through 'Daijiworld'. In the past our "Daijiworld" has done such wonderful deeds. Let the good work continue.A attempt can be done for the 1st time for other parts of India as well. So far it was only in and around DK. Indians owe Sri Tukaram Omble,Because of him India could prove to the world that terrorists who attacked Mumbai were from Pakistan.Otherwise Pak would have blamed India only for this attack ! Unfortunately Government of India already spent Rs 50 crores for Kasab's security. He is enjoying with good breakfast,Lunch and dinner along with 24*7 medical care.Hope Kasab will not die due to high Cholesterol because he is getting delicious biryani in the jail everyday.

WE being fellow Indians salute the Saviour of Mumbai Mr. Tukaram Omble. In the other hand deadly slow proceding of judiciary system the spending on the security of suspected terrorist Kasab is becoming a big burden on Public tax money. In uae we saw many of the cases brought to justice maximum whithin a months period and the convicted got punished irrespective of his punishment, even the capital punishments take place within a fortnight to a months time. But regret the families of peoples who lost/ injured their dear ones are still waiting for that moment in India with great sorrow left behind them for two years now.....

Well said Mr. Chris Misquith! In the early days after the attack, we just heard that late Tukaram Omble was one of the officers killed in action without any further details. Much was heard about the late ACP Mr.Hemant Kharkare, Mr. Sandeep Unnikrishnan and others. Why such a daring sacrifice of Mr. Omble not given due importance by the media remains the question. Definitely he deserves the prestigious award for his bravery and sacrifice and I feel there should be a public campaign for this purpose and ensure that due benefits are provided to his family. Otherwise I think the Govt. will not wake up.

Good article. But the author must understand the funda of justice .It is not based on priority to punish the guilty but on priority not to punish the innocent. That is why it is taking such a long time to punish Kassab.Authors anguish in the injustice done to Omble understandable. But if he thinks he should cut Kassab and feed to dogs then what is the diffrence between him and the terrorist?Often we are dominated by our rage and loose sense in our comments and actions.

    Hi Chris,
While I appreciate your sentiments, Tukaram Omble's sacriffice has been appreciated by one and all here in Mumbai.
Well the Govt. etc. may not have reciprocated the way perhaps expected, but then these are the limitations of a democratic country.
However the family too has been acknowledged / appreciated and guess either yesterday or today a bust of his has been inaugurated at the place he laid his life for the safety of us citizens.
While at this, we did lose some great senior police officers too. A nightmare that was just pray that such a incident does not reoccur anywhere else in the world.
    Kind Regards

Yes! It is indeed a shame on the part of Govt. of India that it is spending huge amount of tax payers money on a trivial cause i.e. Kasab instead of hanging him, whereas, it never even once thought of taking care of the hero's family. What a pity? Our leaders have ample time to think about themselves and fight for their own and their party's right. Who has time for the poor and daring like the unsung heroes?
God when good sense will prevail on our leaders?
