An Answer to Agumbe Road Problems

October 25, 2010

Here is a thought, which has been troubling me ever since I visited the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, USA in October 2008.

Our ghat roads, be it be Agumbe or Shiradi are in bad shape. Every time people talk about it or media highlights about the sorry state of these, more money is poured into bad engineering or corrupt system, in the name of "repair".

However, here is a radical (may be expensive to start with), but effective alternative to ghat roads. That is placing viaducts where road cannot be made well and also flyover like construction made with concrete spans, with support from concrete pillars. This also eliminates the need for deforestation for road widening. I saw this in Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina (details are available at  http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/v.php?pg=111), where a scenic road passes on the viaduct, a green Tanawha trail - walking  path for trekkers crisscrosses below the viaduct.

Millions of visitors/ trekkers/ photographers visit this place, just to see this engineering marvel, coexisting with nature.

Why don`t we put forward such an idea at least for the irrepairable segments of our ghat roads? I am sure construction cost is not an issue, if the safety and convenience are taken into account (many lives are lost in these ghats due to bad road engineering). If done well, I am sure it would make Agumbe the most scenic drive in India !

Good point - Joel of Mangalore/Sydney - paying yearly registration fees is a good idea since that money can be utilized for upkeep and maintenance of the roads and the infrastructure. After all, most of the vehicle users are fairly well off and they can afford to pay the reasonable registration costs. The annual registration renewal costs will also discourage some people from buying their own vehicles and instead use the public transport, thus less traffic on the roads and consequently, less pollution.

The Trouble in India is the Vehicle Regestration where in they register their vehicles for 15 years and use the road ten times of the cost they pay so where ll the money come to get the roads fixed we should be lucky enough tat we got a Road to travel on.. Where as in Western countries where in Vehicle is registered every year and the money paid durin the registration is spent bak on roads and infrastructure.. Tats how they Maintian road.. And u people dream of having good roads where in u never bother abt paying registration for 15 years once u buy the vehicle.. Another main reason is Corruptions.. Its getting heights in India...

South India as a whole is a beautiful and nature hugging place in the world and for us Indians to recognise this may take some time understanding the nature in this modern concretasisation of our natural habitats.
While some roads are necessary evil, it is believed roads are integral part of distruction of a civilsation or natural beauty. Having said that, the pollution emiting roads are unnecessary to say the least. Road traffic must be lessened and rail traffic must be increased and it is a win win situation for polltion control.
THe bombardment on exiting Indian roads with heavy polltuion causing cars and vehicles will only worsen the sitiuation.
As the world knows, America is the largest polluter causing country( photos are misleading) in the world with its hunger for large cars and vehicles and its hunger for highest amount of gasolene consumption for 300 plus million people.
What India needs at this hour for our 1.2 billion inhabitants, ways and means to cut pollution otherwise there will be a endemic of diseases in our population.
We the learned, must think straight and the development does not come from roads, broad roads what I mean. Development must take place in our health promoting modern living. Let us concentrate the eliminate poverty and decent living and food for all Indains before we waste our resources. Let us promote polltion free modernisation rather tahn pollutution causing dreams. Yes agumbe has problems but these must be dealt with differently.

Such beautiful road can be built only under the leadership of Dr Manmohan Singhji and UPA Chairman Soniaji. They are the great visionaries of India. Under The leadership of Congress Govt we have seen beautiful roads and highways built all over the country. Bjp Govt can just build 5 kms long concrete road and say we have done all round development. I can see Mr Rahul Gandhi having a great vision to build such kind of becutiful roads...

    hi,Samuel, Dharmastala ,

In last 60 years your congress did nothing & now you can only dream.

Following are the future of congress:

    1. Congress will bid for olympic games & pay bribe to host the same.

    2. Instead of kalmadi , a person named hanamadi ( make money )will be made head of the olympic games.

    3. Budget will be of Rs. 3 lacs crores.

    4. Preparation starts with corruption.

    5. congress leaders will announce first let olympic games finish aftr that enquiry.

In gujarath congress name is vanished .

In bihar election bjp-jdu combine will win the election.

CONGRESS WILL TRY FOR POWER FROM BACK DOOR WITH THE HELP OF LOCAL GOONDA PARTIES.

Rceently I had been via Agumbe ghats to Sringeri during rainy season and I will tell you the scene which I saw was Staright from the English film Avatar, it was an absolute treat to eyes and I am off the personal opinion we have not marketed us well outside India, we go in droves to Europe and other countries but we do not know that there are some places which will put these places in to complex, we do need good roads, our intentions are good but our bureaucracy is not, we do not want to perform well because of our own selfish needs, I do appreciate that Vajpayaji had a great dream of connecting India thro building the golden quadrilateral, my only question is why did we take so long in building such good quality roads, it is because of the deep slumber of the main congress party which practically did not do any good for the country.

So I do agree we should build the ghats on a priority basis

    Shiradi ghat
    Charmadi ghats
    And Agumbe ghats

Have to be given a serious thought.

Having said, I have noted down that the roads have improved a lot in Karnataka during recent times better than congress ruled states.

Even CWG would have been impossible without the British, supervising us.Congress looted the country for fifty years and BJP over took them in two years, BJP cant even proper roads leave bridges.

Good idea. however it will be extremely difficult do it in India since corruption is rampant and out of the budget nearly 60% will be siphoned off. If the bureaucracy can be cleaned which might decade decades this will be herculean task. While flyovers on the Ghats as described is a good idea, I suppose the priorities with the Government authorities should lie first and foremost in fixing up other pressing issues like accute shortage of electrcity supply in the district of South Kanara. Half of the time, especially in the summer season, there will always be power cut and load shedding, every now and then, causing massive inconvenience to the people. The relevant authorities would also do well to hasten completion of the road work undertaken ages ago in and around Mangalore area.

One gets a feeling that the current Karnataka Government gives least priority to the district of South Kanara when it comes to infrastructure and developmental project works - perhaps, it thinks that the people are more affluent and fairly well off there as compared to their cousins in other districts like North Kanara, Bidar, Gulbarga, Bijapur and such other interior districts who deserve to be looked after better. To get back to the topic of flyovers, I think with the recent introduction of the Mangalore - Bangalore Railway Services, some of the road traffic has been taken away - perhaps, it will ease still further, especially in the Shiradi - Hassan region, if the Railways introduce one or two more daily passenger/express services.

CWG village was d as one of the best villages in the history of Commonwealth ! Full credit goes to Indians & Indians & Indians..No one can take creidt from Indians ! hi,Jyothi, Mangalore,

    Caps lock swithched off.

We are dicussing about Agumbe Road as per Mr.Kiran Acharya's dream.

In india there are two types of people .

    1. developers.

    2. non developers.

congress ruled our country almost 60 years & we are witnessing scams like CWG.

In Gujarath Shrimaan Narendra Modidji has developed whole state irrespective of:

    1. caste , creed & religion.

    2. political psrties.

    3. geographical area.

But people like TEESTA SETELAVAD & other jobless people are hatching conspiracy against Shrimaan Narendra Modiji.

In recent elecetions of metropolitan, municipal, district panhayath, taluk panchayath & gram panhayath BJP won two third majority in some places & clear majority in most of the panchayaths.

    but congress lost everywhere.

In karntaka jds & congress are jealous of Shrimaan yediyurappaji's development work & started to hatch conspiracy against BJP govt. to topple.

BJP WILL BUILD ROADS , BRIDGES ETCC. AS PER MR. KIRAN ACHRYA'S DREAM.

AGUMBE ROAD WILL BE A REALITY IN COMING YEARS .

    JAI HO BJP.

In Switzerland most of the highways go through enrmous mountains (Alps). Even the four lane highways are built like the ones shown above. Moreover, there are plenty of long and very long tunnels which along with viaducts avoid unnecessary hairpin bends. It is not difficult to construct them in Shiradi,Agumbe,Charmadi and Madikeri. The Western Ghats are tiny compared to the Alps.

Our State govt has crores of Money to buy MLAs but not for roads. When Vajpayee was P.M. he started developing Highways in Mumbai & Maharashtra, congress govt completed the job. So we have 4 lane from Bombay to Bangalore. Hats off to Vajpayee n Manmohan Singh. Now Kundapur to Surathkal 4 lane work has started with full swing, thanks again to central govt. Our state govt is useless BSY is using a helicopter for travelling, he doesn’t need roads. We hope to have new govt, May be Agumbe have better roads.

Dr. Kiron, it can happen in our country too, provided our corrupt politician act according to their oath. We cannot blame any contractor for bad quality work, because most of the contracted amount goes to the pocket of our beloved politicians and bureaucrats. How can you expect quality work in India? Most of the engineers working in gulf countries are Indians one can visibly differentiate work quality between India and gulf.

Why not give a serious thought & implement? I have not seen Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, USA, & therefore, not competent to comment. But cost may not be such big problem. If we can do a Flyover over the sea as in the case of Mumbai, doing something similar to solve the problems of commuters, transporters along Charmady, Shiradi & Agumbe Ghats without affecting the enviornment must be given serious thought. The cost can be recovered through toll charges say over 30 or even 50 years. I just wish that our planners, engineers & bureaucrats give a serious thought. Our politicians who spend crores on foreign travel must actually see & think of implementing this type of constructive ideas. But the big question is whether they have the time for this?

Yes, As Suggested this is Good Alternative to Shiradi & charmadi !

A very good idea Dr. These scene of roads are built where they can not dug the hill and make them wide due to heavy rocks. So they come up with these kind of flyovers. Our ghats specially charmady, shirady or agumbe are already built and widened so that two vehicles go to-fro at a time. But here lacs the safety. No safety barriers besides, no sing boards at the sharp curves, and specially the roads are full of patholes. Better improve these things first, then the roads will be scenec.

This indeed can be a permanent solution for all ghats including Agumbe, Charmadi and Shiradi. And i am sure this has been proposed to CPWD and PWD.
But the question here is, that who will excecute. For example, we can not design and construct a flyover on plain ground (i am referring to the Kuntikan Junction), ghats is more of a challenging atmosphere.
solution to all problems ......... STOP CORRUPTION, and stop transferring of dedicated Civil Servants. Jai Hind.
