All about the Magical Word 'Love'

Jun 21, 2010

After god made heaven, earth, sea, light and all the good things he committed the first mistake-he created Adam. After that he made his second mistake-he created Eve and then he made the biggest mistake of all-he did not create any other woman! Poor Adam was left alone with Eve and was forced to marry her, without an opportunity to look at and woo other women.

I am sure you all are wondering what’s wrong with this guy. Well I am just researching on love. Love is a four letter word which each one of us has experienced in life. I am not talking about mother’s , fathers’, sisters, brother’s, granny’s, grandpa’s, uncle’s and aunt’s (these cover almost all relatives) love. I am talking about the one and only magical word ‘love’. In this article, I will take you around my crazy world of love that is LOVE AAJKAL, in simple English Love Today and Tomorrow.

Let me begin with a brief history of love. I have no idea from where it began and who coined the word, but whoever it was, I would love to hug him and plant two kisses on his/her cheeks. Well everything is legal nowJ. Every religion has its own deity of love. St Valentine for Christians, Manmata for Hindus etc etc. That means religion allows love and when a couple elopes to get married, they aren’t committing any sin. I am sure my mom and dad who might read this will be wondering what the hell their son is up to. Is this a way he is telling us he has plans to elope? No.  Be rest assured I don’t have any plans. Not yet J

The concept of wooing the opposite sex is was and will be the same for ages to come. But now booing the same sex is also legal in many parts of the world. A typical evolution of love from 1950 to 2000 is very well documented in Hindi movies. I can’t even imagine the plight of Bollywood and particularly SRK without “LOVE”.  This poor superstar would be jobless!!Dilip Kumar in Mughl-e-Azam to Abhishek and John in Dostana depict evolution of love as stated above. The 1970 guys sang songs around a bush, fought villains and saved the girl from evil forces and finally won over the heart of the girl. Lovers always met each other at secret places like outside the temple/church, in the forest; near the well etc and it was always the guy who   dominated the relationship. Love gradually became vibrant and colorful in 1990’s  as college canteens, a mutual friend’s house, parks became the secret hideouts of lovers and the plot was often thickened with violence in late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Love affairs nowadays start in schools and end when the pair ends up in college. I have quite a few friends who had three partners separately in school, college and then at workplace and sadly I did not have even one in any of the three stages!!!. Amazing

I would like to write a paragraph on evolution of the ways of showing love. The couple touched hands and occasionally kissed their partners on the cheeks. (Well I really don’t know, I am just guessing. My knowledge is purely based on the two roses which came together in Hindi movies).Touching hands and rubbing legs is a thing of past now. Couples nowadays are advanced in their ways of making oops…..showing love towards their partners. I know its none of my business to interfere in people’s personal lives and I am just writing this for a bit of fun.” Play Safe” would be my advice J. It’s not an unknown fact that there are MORAL POLICE interfering and meddling with personal lives in our city, hence the advice.

I always wonder why girls never propose to a guy and always wait for the guy to propose. Some girls do propose and finally just deny it and say the guy proposed. Seriously I believe in love and have decided to wait until a girl proposes to me. You see it will be changing the accepted trends, so that our name will be written down in golden words just like that of Romeo and Juliets,  but the other way around. Proposals in olden days were of many kinds- via friend, via letter through a friend and direct. Now the trend has changed, SMS’s dominate the proposals and break ups too, Skype, gtalk and yahoo messenger coming close second. Long distance relations are becoming very high. Sometimes even force is used i.e. the guy kidnapping the girl or the girl slapping the guy across the face.

With proposal comes its natural follower –nopes! Not rejection, it is Breakup. It’s the cause and effect of relationship. One of the few things I learnt in Physics. Hope it really is physics and not chemistry:) People always blame the guy for ditching and it s so damn true. I have hardly heard about girls ditching their guys. I know many girls would be laughing at me thinking about their ex boyfriends and many guys will be praising my thoughts thinking about their ex girl friends. The boyfriend/girlfriend who was the best person in the entire milky way, turns out to be the worst ever ******** (fill in whatever u want) on earth after the breakup. Well one can find a thousand couples breaking up everyday and at least 50% of them will have found another partner the next day. I am not saying the remaining 50% will live without love for rest of their lives.  They too will find their true love after a couple of days. You know, it always is a good thing to have some rest in between.

There is a saying love is blind, with many new additions to it like “Its not only blind, it’s deaf and dumb too”. Love happens to everyone .People who  got married in an arranged way, might think “What the hell, I have never fallen in love”. It’ rubbish. As SRK says in one of his movies “God has already made someone special for each one of us. It’s just that we have to meet them.” I will add some more to it “Some people meet them before marriage, some just before marriage (I am talking about arranged) and some very unlucky ones after marriage”. The last sets of people are those who file divorces which is a growing trend in Mangalore.

Love is not at all a bad thing, but a lot of thinking goes behind before one falls in love. What am I saying? Love is blind and it just happens as I said in the earlier paragraph. The consequences of this sometimes may turn bad like hurting one’s parents, bringing up kids in a mixture of two religions or many a time none. I personally look at love as a very pure and lovely thing which comes second only to sacrifice. (Remember the hero in Mungaru Male .. I do). Cheers.

I am a catholic and married a hindu. off course it was a love marriage. But my parents and family think that the boy does not really love me because he did not agree to covert to a catholic.they said its not true love. the point i want to bring forth here is that different people have different opinions about love . Ultimately its the bond the caring sharing the understanding the compromises and adjustments that two people have for each other that springs in true love between two people. my daughter though is a catholic.

    Please read Deuteronomy 5:11
" Thou shalt not take the name of
the LORD thy God in vain: for the
LORD will not hold his guiltless that taketh his name in vain" - A.S. Mathew U.S.A

Mr. Mathew, You state that god is Omniscient - Omnipresent and Omnipotent. You also state that he is compassionate and merciful and then you quote that "one must not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain".

I can understand your need to be totally subservient to the Lord, but do you think that the one you call Father who has not directly sired you would punish you for questioning his capabilities?. To be honest, I would not want to be part of such a concept. I would prefer to be outcast by such a creator. Religion states that we are all part of the same God, if we are all his fragments then he is the sum of all of us plus more which means there is no difference between him and 'I'. This is what Hinduism teaches me along with Dharma and love. We don't even have a concept of heaven and earth, however swarg and narak are two states that we constantly get in and out off. You do not have to die to reach these states, but in every moment of the soul, where in 'life with a body' is also a part, can go to these two states. In other words, it is a simple cause and effect, for example fire - you can either derive warmth or get burnt by it. Here warmth and burnt is the state of swarag and narak.

So the bottom line is please do not cast fear on the young believers about God, just because you have been done in. The Fear is a tactic employed to force blind submission by organized religion. Just stick to the 3 O's along with compassion and mercy and all is well.

The top comments here I feel were from Ashish Rai and Jovial.
Reuben I guess needs to grow up. "Devout" is no longer a merit that you self indulge in. It has to come from others based on your duty to devotion. The terrorists are devout themselves, so it means little. I guess Reuben wants a superman as his god anything short of that he would divorce. The so called God made a perfect world for us to live it but let the core cool down, he provided the perfect temperature from the Sun which is decaying ....??. We can toss this out with "God has other plans for us". If he did then was his first plan a failure ...?. My friend, please do not get offended, but you need a chill pill and don't take religion so seriously.

The three attributes of God are
    " God is omniscient-omnipresent-
    omnipotent".

Anil, you can make joke of anybody
in the world, but in some case
in the wrong place, it can be
    very dangerous.

Since God is a loving and merciful
God, He always deals with you
with compassioln while making joke about God "God made a mistake".
It seems like you are above God and
God is second to you in His
    attribute of "omniscient".

    Please read Deuteronomy 5:11
" Thou shalt not take the name of
the LORD thy God in vain: for the
LORD will not hold his guiltless that taketh his name in vain"

First of all, Mr.Simon, I didn't see anywhere in the article, the bio-data of Anil where he has mentioned whether he is a catholic or not. That makes me wonder with what preconceived notion you are commenting.
Secondly indeed fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. You know your scriptures, good for you. But the fear that I have about my Father in Heaven may be totally different from yours. He is my loving father and so I have no fear, whatsoever to approach Him
Yes, I do have the fear of profaning His name. But surely I believe He made us in His own image and definitely he must have sense of humour? He wants us to be free children of God and not hide in fear of Him. By the way, He may have forgotten to instil a dose of humour in you. How sad! May be, you were not worth it!

I like the topic of love Mr. Anil has taken. Love in general is good of course God cannot make mistakes as Anil mentioned. May be as humour he said like that. The love which is here is I think that of falling in love during teenage and after words during the college life shich is romantic and sometimes continues sometime not. The real love should come after the marriage with sacrifice and foregiveness. the Romantic love which will not survive unless strong foundation or back ground. As we know God is love and He created all humanity out of love for the humanity but man made mistake by sin but again God loved the world again by sending to the world His only Son. So also the human beings inn general and specially the(couples) when they are in love should forgive and forget and adjust in love life as God said love God first and thy neighbour which is applicable even to those who are in love and married people. Good to know about love good work and keep going.

    Janette D'souza,
The next mistake God committed was to instil a dose of humour in some so called 'holier than thou' people.
What are you trying to justify here.Do you say God makes mistake if so why do you beleive in God who is just like you according to your above mentioned statement. If the article was written by other than catholic writer you would have made big hue and cry.Why did it bother you when the church was attacked in mangalore. Is it not the church belong to your God who makes mistake in your own thinking.
Fear of the Lord is the begining of wisdom. I am not holy than God but i know our God is Holy and there is no lighter note to make fun of Him.

This article is good on a lighter note, but an advice to the author who might proceed to write many more articles. Topics like this are vast, and vary from one situation to another. It is sensitive and cannot be generalized. The comments that came forth are pretty much understandable because most aspects in the article are a good reference to teenage love or “puppy love” which believes in fiction. The article lacked clarity and completion, at places it was difficult to connect as the author jumped in and out from proposing, to expressing of love, to divorce, love after marriage, love before marriage, and number of partner’s, homo or heterosexual love, so on and so forth. Quite a few things covered and it was generalized to a situation the author had in mind. Unfortunately not all have gone through the same phase people have different experiences in this big wide world. Well for all the readers always remember “LOVE” is NOT - A bed of roses, roses have thorns, and they do prick and when they prick they hurt pretty hard. It’s about adjustment, patience and forgiveness. Perhaps if both parties in a love filled relationship, thinks about loving the other the way they love themselves the world will be a happier place to live in. We are human beings prone to making mistakes so just Forgive/Forget and move on. Life is really short and it’s just about making it sweeter with every passing day. Enjoy your day!!!

Humans fall in love only until hormones exist in them. Once hormones are exhausted that is after the age of 50 or 60 (with some exceptions !)all craving for romantic love stops. So the real culprit is hormones. Until then some fall in love once (Pehla pyaar), twice, thrice or even more. For a good married life, the most important necessity is understanding and adjustment love comes naturally after that, may be one does not have to 'fall in love'.

You don't have the right to say 'God' made the mistakes. Correct yourself and apologise quickly. - Joviel D'Cruz

I know that I will instigate a lot of debate on this, but what right do you have to tell Anil that he cannot say 'God' made mistakes. This is called blind faith, Anil was talking about blind love, two ends of the same spectrum. "Love" is abstract, It is not the four letter word that is with most teenagers, it is not specific nor definable. Before you get into it's discussion you need to have a premise to work on. Having said this, Hindu's have Manmata as well as Kama, the difference is 'love' and 'lust'.

The author in this article has romance and lust as a premise and we need to stick with it. This is the reason why we need to define it. For example, Son's love to his mother, a Nun's love to Jesus takes on a whole different premise. Romeo's love for Juliet and a King's Harem takes on a whole different meaning and the two cannot equate.

I do not buy into 'God' creating the heaven, earth, sea etc as I am a Hindu and also I believe in evolution theory of chance and ion as opposed to what is written in a book. God in my definition is everything around me including me. So I do not want to put forth my opinion, but the article seemed to be out from a catechism book to the Catholics and not for the general public intellect. I think it is a nice gossip column for young boys and girls to sit and debate on 'love'.

  • Vijay, Mangalore

    Mon, Jun 21 2010

Love should be matured and unconditional. Love should not have if conditions. Now a days girls will first see the if conditions (E.g:if boy well educated and got good job and settled and handsome and smart and working abroad and .....). In such cases the love will slowly diminish as soon as few of the if conditions were not met. The promise of 'In sickness and health, good times or bad times' etc is just a formality and they don't even understand the meaning of it. sad hah.

Love? get married and then you will run away from it :). However there is few exceptions to it. There are couples who understand each other's problems / diferences, make required adjustments to one another and live in love throughtout the life.

One thing I want to say, that God was not mistaken, and he will not. he create earth and al things what human needed, to enjoy us, after that he create human, but he put condition, that human respect Creator or creature/but human in temptation went wrong and still in our own selfish way we do. Whatever we have enough and even that we want more, so we all do one not one mistake, in selfish or greediness. And we blame God? Please don’t blame God and make worst sin, Oh God have mercy on us, please forgive us, we only don’t know what we speak.

"Poor Adam was left alone with Eve and was forced to marry her, without an opportunity to look at and woo other women"

He said it in a funny way I believe because, even if we look at 100 girls, or love, we will get only the one which God has made for us. So its God who has decided, not us...(God forcing us to marry the girl which he has made for us, not the one which we like) I think we can understand it in this way...lol what you say Mr. Anil?

After god made heaven, earth, sea, light and all the good things he committed the first mistake-he created Adam. After that he made his second mistake-he created Eve and then he made the biggest mistake of all-he did not create any other woman
Your article is good but on above statment thau you have made hard to digest. If God makes mistakes then He is not God.Reason well before you write about Gods plan on garden of eden.

Love is Sacrifice...There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind.
She hated everyone, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She told her boyfriend, 'If I could only see the world, I will marry you.'

One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her. When the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend. He asked her,'Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?' The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn't expected that. The thought of looking at them the rest of her life led her to refuse to marry him.

Her boyfriend left her in tears and days later wrote a note to her saying: 'Take good care of your eyes, my dear, for before they were yours, they were mine.'

This is how the human brain often works when our status changes.
Only a very few remember what life was like before, and who was always by their side in the most painful situations. Life Love=Sacrifice. Don't ever try to gain love by forceably..Jai Ho..

Anil, if humanbeings is product of adam n eve...than who are the adam and eve of bears..one who are staying in polar and one in plain??..

    - it's totally wrong nowadays gals are proposing first..and boys are hiding while looking at the gals..earlier it's vice-versa..
