To date it is a common practice among Hindu religions to choose a religious leader or religious head or mutt (monastery) head through hierarchical system, based on caste or some affiliation to mutts. But here is a rare religious leader or rightly a spiritual leader hailing from a prestigious Bunt community of the district, who is also armed with bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Nitte.

About Esha Vittaldas Swamiji

Esha Vittaldas Swamiji, popularly known as Kemaru Swamiji is a 39-year-old seer, who hails from Paladka, Moodbidri. Both his parents, Vittal Shetty and Prema Shetty were heads of the school. Like any engineering graduate soon after graduation he entered into professional field through Larsen & Toubro, Chennai division, but his interest was always spirituality and fascinated him more than materialistic world. Soon he discontinued his work at L & T and concentrated on self-study of religions.

His spiritual quest heightened and soon he began contacting several spiritual gurus and meditation. This spiritual thirst led him to Himalayas, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Vrindavan and Mathura among other holy places. Finally, he ended up at Kodachadri near Kollur, which he found suitable for his spiritual study. The time he lived here he meditated and also studied Vedas and religious texts on his own.

"Nature is the biggest gift of the God,” says Kemaru Swamiji, an ardent lover of nature, who pledges his support to protect the same. He says that his inspiration was a guru, who he met while studying at Nitte. He adds that he is a spiritual power refusing to name him.

Seer Visits Daijiworld Office - Shares Views with Readers

Oratory skill is the gift the seer possesses. He has the capacity to mesmerize the audiences whenever he had the opportunity to address public. Understanding of all religion having studied even Bible and Quran apart from Hindu scriptures and having no fanatic views has worked to his advantage and people irrespective of different religions have flocked in to hear him.

Recently, Kemaru Swamiji visited Daijiworld office and evinced interest to share his views with the readers of the website. "Everything else can wait, but search for God will not wait," he says quoting Yoganada Paramahamsa's words. "Biggest help to the world is self-realisation," he says quoting Swami Ramathirtha. "Once there is a self-realization, you cannot cheat others. You will always be humble and will not hurt others," he preaches.

"Every religion preaches one to be a good person. Strive for perfection, but do not imitate God, remain good,” is all he says. On the other hand, he is of the opinion that Holy books should not be used in the courts. The teachings of Bible, Quran and Bhagvad Gita should be engraved in one’s heart and it has no relevance in court, he says.

Vision, Aim Behind Kemaru Mutt and Sandipani Ashram

In 1999, Kemaru Swamiji established his own mutt called 'Kemaru Mutt' near Paladka, Moodbidri and there by established 'Sandipani Ashram'. Subsequently in 2002, Sri Laxminarayana Temple came into existence.

He has specific vision and aim behind establishing the ashram and temple. He lays them as below.

  • Every Sadhu, Saint and Prophet's preaching should reach everyone
  • Every child has a right to get material and spiritual education
  • Low-level thinking should be done away with
  • People increasingly are forgetting to smile, which is a natural phenomenon. People take help of laughter clubs to induce laughter. Happiness comes from God and one should be able to smile from heart and thus live happily forever
  • Person who is naturally happy commits fewer sins
  • To focus on young generation to build a better society thereby better nation

Sandipani Ashram is currently looking after 30 orphan children giving them food, shelter and free education. Swamiji also intends to give free education to many students, provided he gets help from generous people around the world.

‘No Room for Communal Thoughts in Mangalore’

Kemaru Swamiji is of the opinion that Mangalore is a wonderful place with wonderful people. But, unfortunately two political parties are creating communal tension quite often and are taking the advantage of innocent people. He says less than one per cent of people of the region are communal. If there were no elections, there would be no communal thoughts here, he stresses and adds proudly that he has been frequently invited by individuals and organizations belonging to all the communities, Hindu, Muslim and Christian included to preach or take part in an event.

Self-realization in an individual will help bring down communal differences and lead towards happiness. He observes that the people’s lifespan is coming down rapidly as the human wants are increasing by the day in comparison to the men in ancient times. He feels in the olden days people were happier and lived a long life.

“It is sad that people do not realize the value of blood. Most of all it is important for all the religious heads to come put of their cocoon and become broadminded." "Where is the happiness now?” he questions giving an example of how a person switches TV channels for happiness and entertainment. Within a few seconds a person would have changed several channels. Happiness to has attained the connotation, he says that only happiness lies in being spiritual.

"Today unfortunately people opt for easy money sacrificing their self-happiness. We spend less time with our children, nature, birds or pets, yet we have all the time to go behind the wealth." He advises people to spend at least one hour chanting, reading good books, and listening to good people. Parents and teachers should be role models to the children and not the TV shows, channels and technology.

Tips for Life

  • Service to humanity is highest form of worship
  • Know the value of pain and blood. It takes nine months for a mother to carry her baby in her womb and give birth. But it takes less than a second to kill someone!
  • As per Buddha, it is easy to break, but it is impossible to fix again!
  • Giving knowledge to others is biggest talent, if you have perfect knowledge then share it with others
  • We worship manmade statue, but human body is God made which should be more valuable!
  • Parents should care for their children with love, so that they will not turn anti-social one day
  • Those who won't practice 'patience' in life will become 'patients' in life!
  • Science asks man to Go ahead, but spirituality asks man to go back (to God !)
  • Science and technology is good, but should be used in right manner for right purpose.
  • Spirituality should come from heart and not through symbols
  • Mahatmas (realized souls) such as Jesus Christ, Narayana Guru and Mohammed Paigamber belong to all religion and they should be branded as of a religion
  • Every individual cannot be a 'heart specialist' but every person can have a 'special heart'
  • We are in the competitive world, but we should not forget humanity. Let us respect the human values

Swamiji's Mission

Esha Vittaladas Swamiji, who has down to earth nature belongs to whole world due to his spirituality, simplicity, profound knowledge, love for people and love to meet them.

He has undertaken the mission of educating poor and orphan kids. Apart from his ashram in Kemaru, he is planning to build an ashram near Kedinje, Karkala at 50 cents land donated to him. Those who would like to meet or talk or write to him and support his mission can contact him directly on Mobile: 0091-9902518810 or e-mail him at eshaswamiji@gmail.com

We need Swamijis like him who can really bring communal harmony in India. Unfortunately, most of the Swamijies are associated with communal and fanatic organizations supported by some political outfits. This Swami is an exception. Long live our Secular India. JAI HO

Though the article mentions him as someone from a particular community, He is costless and belongs to all.In fact he identifies himself more with the poor. oppressed and the downtrodden. He is a model among the many who use saffron for their selfish gains.

Very postivie thinking of swamiji. Need similar leaders to change recent communal difficulties of Mangalore. Our politicians are the killer of peace and harmony among people. For political power politicians use religions to clash among people to gain power. Day will come these politicians will become a patient and suffer of their crime they have done on to humanity.

  • A.S.Mathew, U.S.A.

    Tue, Jan 05 2010

We need Swamijis of his caliber to create peace and joy in the society. His calculations are correct. 1% of the people in a highly cultured and educated society like Mangalore, sowing problems to create disorder among the 99% of the peace loving people is a serious issue to be addressed. Belivers of all religions must start reading religious books belong to other religions like he did, and it will create more closeness among them because certain cardinal truths in all the books are applicable to all religious followers. We need to undertake an earnest effort to bring peace in the society. While peace is a creative force, fight is a destructive force. Let the 99% of the people may make the decision to the path of peace or destruction.

Good my dear swameeji. U r relly great. U r blunt and speak truth. Ur message "dont imitate God but be good" is the message people need these days. There are millions of so called Godly persons who claim they are devine and cheat people and women. We need religious thinkers like you and we love and respect you a lot for your understanding of religion and your concern for humanity. Please keep visiting us through DW and guide the misguided general public and politicians and other seers who play into the sentiments of ignorant people and incite communual violence and defame and malign other religions. Keep up the good work. You are great because u learnt devine books of major religions and secondly u aquired engineering degree and u have wisdom and enlightement. May Allah give you long life, peace, happiness and good health. You can bond the hearts and bring about communual harmony unlike some seers of some prestigious institutions who act like agents of RSS/BJP and add fuel to the sensitive issues. Jai Ho. Unity in diversity and united we stand and devided we fall.

    1. Atleast one religious leader openly and honestly expressed root cause for communal disharmony is politics and elections for political power. 2. Swamijii's views is as good as written in Holy books of all religions. 3. Swamijii's thoughts are relevant to present world but there need to be a movement to implement them into practice. 4. Majority of Mangaloreans are traditionally cultured and wish peaceful coexistence. 5. One percent people are dirty politicians, corrupt, terrorists, hypocrites who pose as believers in God, but in reality do not believe in God create disorder in society. They need enlightenment, prayers, and action. Swamijii deserves all support to his mission

Sir, everyone who wishes peace and harmony should know, respect and accept and practice other religions' preachings. This is the only way to shrug-off religious differences or feelings and build feelings of peace and harmony. Though I am not a believer, I admire your efforts in bringing forth thoughts and preachings from this noble Hindu leader. Please keep up your efforts in introducing such personalities and thoughts as they are common to all religions. In other words, they represent no religion but they do represent humanity.
