Immigration Canada Announces New List of Preferred Occupation

by Nancy Mendes
Certified Canadian Immigration Consultant

Totonto, Jun 28: Federal Immigration Minister Jason Kenny has announced new rules and professions for the eligibility for Canadian Immigration in the Federal skilled worker category. Though there will be fewer professions, the qualified professionals will be able to immigrate quicker and join the Canadian work force.

The first such change was introduced in February 2008, with the onset of the Bill C50.  Under these changes FSW applicants will be assessed based on certain criteria.  These criteria are not applicable for applicants intending to live in the Province of Quebec or applications received before June 26th 2010.

As part of the changes, the number of occupations eligible for the federal skilled worker program has also been reduced from 38 to 29.

Due to an oversupply in the job market, 20 of the original 38 job categories have been removed, including managers in finances, computer and information systems, health care and construction, as well as university professors and college and vocational instructors. They are being replaced with 11 new occupations: social workers, psychologists, dental hygienists and therapists, pharmacists, dentists, architects, biologists and related scientists, insurance adjusters and claims examiners, primary industry production managers (except those in agriculture) and professions in business services and management.

The immigration department will also limit the number of applications in each occupation to no more than 1,000; the applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis. These instructions and restrictions are effective until June 30, 2011. This limit does not apply for applicants having an Arranged employment opinion.

At the time of applying under the new occupation list one must also submit the results of the official language proficiency test for English and/or French and either

• Have an arranged employment opinion from HRSDC  OR
• Have continuous paid fulltime or equivalent part time of one year of work experience in the past ten years in one of the Preferred 29 occupations listed below:

1. Restaurant and Food Service Managers
2.  Primary Production Managers (Except Agriculture)
3. Professional Occupations in Business Services to Management
4. Insurance Adjusters and Claims Examiners
5. Biologists and Related Scientists
6. Architects
7. Specialist Physicians
8. General Practitioners and Family Physicians
9. Dentists
10. Pharmacists
11. Physiotherapists

18. Chefs
19. Cooks
20. Contractors and Supervisors, Carpentry Trades
21. Contractors and Supervisors, Mechanic Trades

23. Industrial Electricians

actually even local canadians don't have proper grammars. and communication isn't just everything. i think it's reasonable to let them in as long as they are able to communicate with their co-workers, about job-related issues. besides, a few of the qualified categories such as chef don't require a high level of communication skills. and the changed policy is ruining my plan so badly. i just graduated at UT(canada) and started working in the summer. i was eligible before the policy changed, but now i don't even know if i can stay in canada after my work visa expires. it just sucks!!

Hi all - sorry to moan but... I am also undergoing the evaluation process. All I can say is that the ability to speak and properly write (i.e. communicate in) the English language (and French for added points), is a key factor. You cannot contribute to society otherwise.
So many of the applications, questions, blogs and forum posts I have researched during my process are so poorly written, it is no wonder that they are being refused. The comments herein are a testament to this.
Everyone, please, do not waste the Visa officials' time - I see there is an "English Mastsres" student here yet they cannot even string grammar together.
I for one am glad that Canada places strict rules on getting in - it means that if I am successful, I will be surrounded by similar professional, well spoken, educated and hard working successful business men and women, not the ilk of those who cannot understand the importance of proper communication. All I can say is, stop asking "Can I get in with this, can I get in with that" - take a LOT of time, do a LOT of research, make your own decision and then PROPERLY start asking questions and doing the application. Take the English tests first to ensure this doesn't shoot you down before you even start - If I was a Canadian immigration officer I wouldn't let even 5% of the above people in, based purely on the poor communication skills, showing a lack of respect and serious attitude towards making Canada a truly great nation for its deserving residents.

I would like to ask you whether the Indian education credentials are accepted in Canada. It is my personal experience that a degree obtained in India is not valid in Canada and people end up doing odd jobs. Hence a person holding a good job position and professionals in India should not quit and come to Canada.
