Mangaluru: Road through Shiradi Ghat with seven tunnels, six bridges

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 2: There are clear indications of the long-pending demand for laying road through tunnels dug on the Shiradi ghat stretch of the highway between the city and Bengaluru will begin soon. The central government plans to cover this project under its ambitious 'Bharat Mala' project. The land acquisition process is likely to begin by the end of December.

Most of the processes connected with the project have been completed. National Highways Authority of India is awaiting land acquisition notification. The plan is to rig 23.57 km-long tunnels between Addahole and Heggadde in Sakleshpur.

The existing project report is being adopted with minor modifications; Instead of the proposed 10 bridges, the modified project will have seven bridges and six tunnels. A detailed project report is under preparation.

Project report had been prepared with 10 bridges and six tunnels seven years ago. The road will move via Addahole, Gundia, Yedakumeri, Kadagaravalli and Marnahalli. Japan International Cooperative Agency had prepared that project report and the project had then come at an estimated cost of Rs 10,015 crore.

Current Distance bet ween addahole and Heggadde is 27 KM it will take about 40 minuts to go. This tunnel will reduce it to 23.5 KM may be 20 minutes driving to save 3.5 KM we are going to spend 12000 Cr of taxpayers money, and making hole on westerghats mountains disturbing all wildlife, they will enter near by villages. So I strongly think this tunnel is not for public interest. Use this money to finish Shiradi to Mangalore road and other damaged roads in DK. We are breaking our back every day.

This project looks foolish. The max time to cover the Shiradi ghat now is around a hours time. with tunnel & bridges, it may get reduced to half an hour. the 10,000 crores planned initially will finally climb to 20000 crores later The time period will be another 10 years. By that time hyperloop may also become a reality.

Tunneling works ( ROADS) are mainly attempted for major savings on Time - All weather especially Snow bound - Mountain passes -
Here it will be interesting to know final time saving vs Regular Upgradation of existing Roads - already major amts spent on land acquistions - Via duct etc etc -

A major ecological disaster already being experienced is in the YETTINAHOLE project which time will tell even more -
Unfortunately Large wasteful projects in the name of so called "public interest" have blessings of all political parties for reasons best known -

This road doesn't need a tunnel at all. The authorities just find a reason to destroy environment. If the road from Sakleshpur to Hassan and from Gundya to B C road can be upgraded to a 4 /6 lane road, the ghat road can just be left as it is and maintained periodically. This will sustain the traffic for many years to come considering that LPG will be transported through exclusive pipelines from the coastal city and truck traffic will reduce eventually. But, sadly the authorities won't think like a common man because they are eyeing for those valuable trees in the forest which they will destroy and make some quick bucks. Its really ironic that the entire world has identified western ghats as one of the fastest disappearing landscapes and yet our authorities are finding new and innovative ways to destroy these forests which play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance.

Tunnel connectivity to Leh and Ladak successfully completed by the present government on schedule. But I seriously doubt if our sitting MPs of DK and Hassan have capability to push the project like ......

those projects are completed not for general public but mostly for military use.

That is why they are done faster and with some aim.

Here Shiradi ghat nobody bothers. MPs and MLAs of Dakshina Kannada are probably the worst in teh whole state.

Please do not forget to add
a)Electric charge stations inside the tunnels because by the time this project is completed, there would be electric vehicles only.
    b) two lanes dedicated only for cyclists due to environmental concerns.

PLEASE LOOK TO THE FUTURE NOW , THAN REGRET IT LATER!

Tunnels planned for road project should be wide enough to include space for two lane railway tracks .This would not only help the Indian railways to link the southernmost part of India to the northern most part at a much faster pace
