Mangaluru: Idea of tunnel under Shiradi Ghat comes to fore

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 20: Within days after the world's longest 'Atal Tunnel' was inaugurated at Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh, the proposal to have a tunnel through the Western Ghats to reach Bengaluru has gained some momentum.

The tunnel, if it comes up, will be an alternative to the current national highway 75. The tunnel is proposed to be 23.4 km long from Addahole to Maranahalli in Hassan district. The estimated project cost is Rs 12,000 crore. National Highways Authority of India has submitted the detailed project report to the central government.

Environmentalists, however, question the need to have such a tunnel. Just because a tunnel was dug in Himachal Pradesh does not mean that the Western Ghats too have the carrying capacity, they argue. They say that precious nature of Western Ghats has been lost for Bengaluru-Mangaluru railway line, hydel power project at Gundia, for B C Road highway, Yettinahole project etc. They point out that because of this onslaught, we have been witnessing the ill effects during the rainy seasons in the recent past. They say that if a tunnel is rigged here, it will deliver another major blow to Western Ghats and Kempuhole rivulet, which is the source of River Netravati, may go dry and the project may prove to be disastrous for Dakshina Kannada district.

Need for tunnel

Even though the distance between Bengaluru and Chennai and Bengaluru and Mangaluru are the same, businessmen depend on Chennai for exporting their products as heavy vehicles feel it tough to negotiate steep road bends on the ghat road. If this tunnel is created comprising seven tunnels of 12.41 metres each in addition to underpasses, over bridges, roads and straight roads, vehicles can move faster and driving is easier.

Environmentalist Dinesh Holla, says that seven dams are being built as part of Yettinahole project and wants to know what happens if something happens at the tunnel. He pointed out that even though landslides have been occurring in the Western Ghats during the rainy seasons, the geological department study report has not yet been obtained by the government. He said that it is advisable to obtain all reports covering individual aspects and opinions of the people and environmentalists before proceeding further in the matter.

There is no need for a new tunnel. Just close the existing road on the hilly side and on top (inverted L shape) , and with only pillars on the open side.

Along with the tunnel let there be parallel railway tunñel too. Railways proposing speeding up to 160 kms per hours speed we can reach Bangalore in 2-1/2 hours. No development took place in this district due to high transportation cost and our youngsters have to migrate to get employment. Development is a permanent change earlier we adopt it will benefit all.

instead of spending huge amount of money for da tunnel , dey should have mooted a plan 4 double railway line 2 da existing single line & run 3 passenger trains from mangalore 2 bangalore daily & da goods train could have moved freely thereby reducing traffic on roadways. our dk & udupi district people r not interested in making dis possible. da mla's & mp's r useless, lethargic & docile representatives. India will never come up unless peoples mentality is changed.

Wah Paisam kya baat hai! Maanta hoon aaj toh aapne kaam ki baat ki hai. The existing roads and railway lines need to be developed and well maintained. Yettinahole project has almost destroyed ecological balance in the region in addition to gulping huge kickbacks by politicians. A tunnel under the Western Ghats will definitely destroy nature, moreover it can be disastrous during rainy season. Considering the regional topography we cannot compare this tunnel with Himachal Pradesh or with one on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. With the world facing the problem of global warming, it’s time for the future governments to contemplate more on environmental friendly developments.

These all the plans like YETTINAHOLE project the more it goes STRETCHED the more money they will mint !!!

even their grand grand children yield out of that because it will take years to complete and as the years go the cost will grow so the income of politician grand grand children grow !!

This is a smart investment plan of Politicians !! Almost all politicians are near to the dying age and they cant see the end of the project because its a GOVT project which will takes at least 100 years to complete. Classic example is PUMPWELL CIRCLE !!

This will only be a money making racket for the politicians officials contractors and their cronies and total waste of people’s money. We already have the yettinahole project which has gone into dumps even generating drop of water. There is really no need of such a tunnel. The roads are wide enough and if they are maintained well they can to accommodate the traffic. Let us all stop this nonsense

This is the great effort. Keep it up. We must move on towards development with minimal damage to nature. The project will reduce environmental pollution by a huge amount by burning lesser fuel for generations to come. I pray this becomes a reality.

No need of Tunnel, the Ghat section roads were recently improved after spending so much. With half of that money, finish BC Road to Gundya NH widening project which is pending.
