New Delhi, Feb 28: In an exemplary act of communal harmony Muslims of Chandbagh area, where Hindus very less in number, helped the family of Hindu bride to get her married off amid violence and chaos.

Savitri Prasad (23) is the Hindu bride, whose family was being pressurized by the groom's family to put off the marriage due to the violence in the city. Savitri was all set to get married. However, the marriage, that was supposed to take place on Tuesday had not taken place and Savitri was shedding tears.

Muslims in the neighbourhood came to know about the plight of the family of Savitri. The marriage was kept on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. However, it would be very risky for the groom and his entourage to come to the bride's place for marriage as curfew was on and most of the market places were closed. So Savitri's father had decided to postpone the marriage further.

The Muslims of Chandnagar assured father of Savitri that they will take care of the security of the groom and his entourage and asked him to go ahead with the marriage on Wednesday. They made the arrangements in their area and the marriage took place as scheduled on Wednesday. When the marriage celebrations were on in Savitri's house fumes were coming out from a nearby building that was set on fire.

Bhode Prasad, father of Savitri said, "We went to the terrace and saw. We could see smoke all over the place in a nearby area. We have been living with the Muslims for several years without any problems. We do not know who is behind this violence. They are not from our area. There is no enmity between Hindus and Muslims here."

Pooja, cousin sister of bride Savitri said, "Whether Hindu or Muslim we are all human beings. We are utterly shocked and scared by this violence. This violence is not about religion. This is created by some vested interests. Due to this, my cousin Savitri's marriage got delayed. Only Muslims in our neighbourhood gave us courage and support and that is why Savitri's marriage took place. We just gave the dress required for the marriage to the bride. Rest all arrangements were managed by our Muslim brothers."

Muslims in Chandbagh area welcomed the entourage of the groom in grand style. When the marriage rituals were going on Muslim men guarded the area preventing any kind of untoward incident. Once the marriage was over, Muslim men escorted the members of the groom's party through narrow lanes and made them reach their homes safely.

"My Muslim brothers have protected me today and helped to get married," said an elated bride Savitri.

"Today my relatives could not take part in the marriage due to violence. But all my Muslim neighbourhood was here. They are like my family," said a teary-eyed Bhode Prasad, father of the bride.
