Raichur, Sep 16: Angry villagers, who alleged that a youth from Gabbur village in Devadurga taluk, who had been brought to the police station in the guise of questioning by the police, died after a police sub-inspector brutally tortured him, laid siege to the police station, pelted stones, and locked up the station.

During the immersion ceremony of Ganesha idols in the town, there was some friction. A youth named Shivakumar (23) had been brought to Gabbur police station for questioning. It is said that police inspector, Muddu Rangappa, assaulted the youth, as a result of which he collapsed to the ground. Even though he was admitted into the hospital, his life could not be saved.

The death of Shivakumar enraged his relatives and fellow villagers. They staged flash protest in front of Gabbur police station situated on Raichur - Devadurga road on Sunday evening. They demanded registration of a case under provisions relating to murder against the erring police sub-inspector. As the village remained tense, additional police were deployed to the village to control the situation.

District superintendent of police, Dr Vedamurthy, however, said that Shivakumar was suffering from epilepsy and he died on account of this disorder.
