Mangaluru: Senior priest Fr Mathias Pereira passes away

Mangaluru, Aug 22: Senior priest Fr Mathias Pereira passed away on Thursday, August 22. 

He was 78. 

Fr Mathias Pereira was the last son among eleven children of late Magdalene D’Souza and Jacob Pereira of Ramasamudra near Karkala in Miyar parish. 

Fr Mathias served first as assistant priest at Valencia from April 20 in 1971. He was ordained on December 31 in 1970. 

He had served as parish priest in Pavur, Arva, Paladka, Balki (in Bidar dioecese), Mulky. Bajpe and Mogarnad. He also served in Vamanjoor and Angelore and Olavinahalli in other capacities and also as director of Bethor-Gurpur Agricultural School. 

Since 2016, he resided at Senior Priest’s Home, Jeppu in city. 

Funeral will be held on August 23 at Valencia Church at 3.30 pm.

    He is a rare priest who practiced Christianity through real life deeds and not just preaching. He not only built many church / school buildings but personally took interest in uniting communities and families. Had great interest in Agriculture. Helped many poor families to build houses, find jobs , get education. He never looked at religion or caste while helping people. People of all religion used to respect him for living truly in Christ. Difficult to find such a priest in today's world. May his soul rest in peace.

    Saddened to hear this. Fr Mathias was a very humble priest and would reach anybody in need.
    He was mostly appreciated with his services to the old and bedridden in giving the holy communion at their residences. May he enjoy his eternal bliss. R.IP Fr Mathias.
