How prepared is Mangaluru city to deal with monsoon this year?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jun 11: Mangaluru finally witnessed rainfall a week later than predicted. Heavy rain is expected in the coming days. Last year, the city witnessed heavy showers towards the end of May. This unleashed havoc on an unprepared city created artificial floods. The district administration and various government bodies who were on their toes last year, assured to evaluate the situation in advance this year and be well prepared to avert any mishap.

Team Daijiworld visited various corners of the city for a reality check to understand if Mangaluru is prepared for monsoons. Prima facie, the team understood that nothing special has been executed by the administration and no decisions taken post last year’s flood have been implemented.

Unscientific drainage system was the main reason for the artificial flood last year and district administration and municipal corporation faced severe backlash. Back to back meetings were held with officials and it was decided that the drainages should be reconstructed to allow rain water to flow through the ‘Raja Kaluves’ which connect the river. Months after the civic authorities started the drainage works in the city. But in some parts the work is still in progress.

Many who have monitored the renovation and repair of drainage works are of the opinion that the work is shoddy and not executed properly. There are no connection holes to drainage, especially in the areas such as Bejai, KSRTC and Lalbagh. Because of this, there is hundred percent chance that water logging will take place and water will enter the shops and houses in these areas.

In places such as Bejai Church Road, opposite Tata Motors, city bus stand, opposite Pabba’s Ice Cream and many other areas, one can see open holes in footpaths and this will allow drainage water flow on roads, whenever it rains heavily. The drainages in Kankanady, Falnir and Bendoorwell area are not cleaned and are covered with silt and plastic.

Pointing out at the failure of corporation and district administration, Arjuna, city based RTI activist says, “The unscientific construction is the main reason for artificial floods in city which we experienced last year. Apart from that, no one follows the guidelines which are issued by district administration for construction works inside the city. The officials always close their eyes when issuing license for a building and final completion certificate. If it rains continuously for fifteen minutes, water will block main spots like Ambedkar Circle (Jyothi) Ballalbagh, Bejai, Kadri, and Lower Bendur. The construction sites in these area and incomplete PWD works are a cause of concern.”

Speaking about the preparations undertaken pre-monsoon, MLA Vedavyas Kamath said, “Last year we faced challenges in the first week of rains. But this time we have already executed many plans to avoid such conditions. In many areas we have completed the work of cleaning the drainages and some parts it is in the final stage. It is true that City Corporation was lagging a bit in planning but now everything is under control. Administration is well equipped to avoid dangerous situations.”

Ramprasad who is running a hotel in city says, “Identifying weak trees and compound walls that are vulnerable to rain has not yet been done. Construction of small bunds around weak trees to strengthen them has also not been materialized. Removing silt in minor drains has also not been done properly. So there are chances to witness flood which we saw last year. It is our humble request to the administration to open a control room before the rains begin, to avoid casualties and panic situations.”

    *No Providence from God??*

MESSAGE GIVEN BY OUR LADY TO WILLIAM COSTELLIA IN HIS HOME ON 13 JUNE 2019
    MESSAGE NO. 787...

"Have you not noticed in many countries that the rain has stopped – or at least reduced – where water will become scarce, but it will be through prayer and sacrifices that you will be given the necessary water and food, because many countries will die of starvation.”

“Have you not read the Book of Revelation, My sweet children, where great catastrophes and disasters are to occur and enslavement. Punishment will come to the world because mankind have [has] placed aside My Divine Son Who is their only Salvation and Joy and Peace.”

“Pray, My dear children and once again I offer you My Holy Rosary so that the children will acknowledge that this prayer is the most important prayer for the Church – for mankind.

it is very nice this awareness came at least initial stage of monsoons. It is our mistake, that we failed to remind the responsible local department. it is voters fault appointing /electing such forgettable candidates. And it is our foolishness to sitting politely with authorities and fighting with neighbours.

Better warm up MCC engineers and other concerned authorities for the betterment of Mangalore. Our MCC Offiers and Engineers are shirking their responsibilities. DC has to transfer long standing Engineers/Officers to other places and extract works from the new ones.

What's the corporation is doing .. if everything need to be addressed by MP and PM... why the hell we have Corporation and so many corporators....
To extent local MLAs are also responsible here. They need to ensure all these are taken care taking corporation in to action... Absolutely nothing... No precautionary actions taken care by corporation... hold them responsible and pull them to road... pull your local corporators. if you are not able to do that , shut and sit. Don't connect MP and PM please.... be matured.

In case of any casualty during monsoon, our representatives should be sued in the court and they should be punished or penalized for not taking interest in public work. They are responsible to pay the compensation for victims from their own purse or should face punishment. Because during taking charge they take an oath to protect and maintain the public interest.

We the people have placed ourselves in compartments of religion and politics and have failed to rise to join hands as humans to resolve some of the underlying issues that are threat to human wellbeing. preserving natural resources and the environment is a lost subject in Mangalore. When we have rain complain of water overflowing and in summer complain of water scarcity. In between we are all good with cutting down green cover, sand mining, blasting of rocks and riding on excavators to bring down anything no matter if it’s a large mountain. We dance to the tune of religious, politicians & bureaucrats who continue to loot. We are the people of the so called smart city….! One-day nature will show its wrath of us.

People of our city and Mangalore Authorities are aware that we have monsoon hitting us every year and aftermath of this as well.
Blaming authorities is pretty simple and easy and we should, coz not much planning is done for drainage systems, rain water flow, foot paths to walk, parking etc etc n list goes on.
Every Govt comes to power starts blaming previous Govt for not doing things and agitate and strikes n bundhs & marches etc. So half of our time goes in these things. Then some time passes by attending functions and programs in and around city. so time passes on and they are still in power. But we common people bear the brunt of it.
Congress or BJP, who ever will have to take these issues seriously coz we wake up after any major mishap happens.
I live in Bejai & work in Bejai & I know Bijai Church circle road looks like a temporary river flowing around. Similarly in major areas of our beautiful city. We talk about being smart city, but we fail to realise how we arrive there with basic infrastructure.
Citizens also to be blamed to a certain extent : how many of us throw garbage around? Plastics around city? how many of us seriously think about co-operating with authorities? How many of us throw our garbage bags on road side, while we travel by cars or 02 wheelers. How many of our schools and homes teach our children about basic civic sense and civic responsibility?
So we reap what we sow, isnt it?

Its a habits-die-hard attitude of almost all municipalities/corporations in India. Come to MUMBAI ... the hundreds of workers emptied the drains and the silt was put along side the drain=cover. ON 10 june rains came with a bang. The silt is back where it belongs and the drains are clogged; as a result we can either walk in this dirty water or consign ourselves to our homes. ONE can not walk on the streets with flowing waters because the the Animal lovers bring their dogs to the streets to do the morning duty. So it is a perennial problem all over India. MANGALURU should have shown the other corporations that they are different with a Lot of literate people around; who runs the corporations is the question.
