Bengaluru: Renowned playwright, writer, actor Girish Karnad dies at 81

Bengaluru, Jun 10 (IANS): Jnanpith award winner, multi-lingual actor, well-known theatre personality and noted playwriter Girish Karnad passed away here on Monday, an official said. He was 81.

"Karnad died at his home at around 8.30 a.m. due to age-related symptoms," an official in the Karnataka Chief Minister's office told IANS.

The veteran actor is survived by his son Raghu, a writer and journalist.

According to a family source, Karnad succumbed to multi-organ failure at his residence at Lavelle Road in the city's upscale locality near the famous Cubbon Park.

In a career spanning six decades, Karnad acted mostly in Kannada and Hindi films, which were in mainstream and off-beat genres. He also featured in television serials, including the famous "Malgudi Days", based on the works of renowned Indian English author, R.K. Narayan.

Born on May 19, 1938 at Matheran near then Bombay (Mumbai) and educated at Sirsi in Karnataka's coastal town, Karnad composed many plays and acted in some of them such as "Tughlaq" and "Hayavadana".

His last play "Rakshasa Tangadi", was published last year.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal-Secular supremo H D Deve Gowda and Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda have offered their condolences.

The last rites of the departed soul will be held in Kalpali electric crematorium, Bengaluru, at 4.30 pm on Monday. As per his last wish, the family has decided to not follow any religious and state honour during his last rites.

Like other left thinkers Karnad was also critical only towards one wing of our system. He was silent towards wrongful acts of others. So it made many to question his stand.Anyway he is considered to be a excellent literate and thinker.

Very well written obituary. He truly deserves. One of the most highly learned and talented person. He did not go behind money but went behind realizing his dreams of making more art films and acting in dramas.

A great talented ,call it a revolutionary. I was mesmerized at seeing SAMSKAARA in the early Seventies, n still recall that film. Fortunately I had an opportunity of sitting beside him in Indian Expressions flight to Bangalore -Mumbai flight in the year 1991 November. So cordial in conversation. Now only a memory. A great Rationalist no more. May he rest in peace.

1)He is very much a konkno and like many other traitors never contributed to konkani. 2)His criticism too was selective. 3 He had comments on only controversial issues. I'm very certain he's a konkno and a traitor to konkani. Made no contribution in konkani
