Udupi: MAHE to hold largest marathon in country on Feb 17

Udupi, Feb 16: "The third edition of mega running event Manipal Marathon will be held in Manipal on Sunday February 17. The race will be flagged off at 6 am from the University building by ICICI south head, Viral Rupani and will culminate after breakfast and a stage function," said MLA Udupi and president of organising committee Raghupati Bhat.

He addressed a press meet here on Friday February 15. "The event will be completely organized by the students of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. The students organizing the event will be from Manipal Runners’ Club and Volunteer Service organization.

"It is the largest student organized marathon in the country and attracts runners from all over the world. The categories for this year’s marathon will be 3 km, fun run, 5 km, 10 km and 21 km.



"The theme for this year’s marathon will be ‘Mental Health Awareness’. Mental health diseases affect people of all age groups and from all walks of life, but the university students are most vulnerable to fall prey to various diseases.

"Over 7,000 runners have already registered for the 2019 marathon. It is expecting 10,000 participants including fun run participants.

"Few Ethiopian runners, six runners from Sri Lanka and eight from Kenya have registered to run the half marathon, 21 km, which carries a prize money of Rs 50000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 15,000 for the first second and third finishers respectively. The total cash prize for the winners of the marathon will be Rs 8 lac cash prizes. Dr Vinod Nayak added.

“We have entries from all over the country and a large number of MAHE students will also be racing.

"All arrangements are being made to ensure a smooth conduct of the event, which has ICICI Bank as the main sponsors. The co-sponsors are Syndicate Bank, SBI and Bharat Petroleum. Commander Abhilash Tomy of Indian Navy, the only Asian to have participated in the Golden Globe Race 2018, which entailed a solo circumnavigation of the globe in a non-motorized sail boat will also be present.

"Hephsiba Rani Korlapati, deputy commissioner will be chief guest.

"As in the past, Volunteer Services Organization will put up games and stalls at KMC Greens for entertainment. In addition, there will be 'Laughter Yoga' for health and happiness by laughter guru, Dr Madan Kataria, according to VSO coordinator, Dr Anup Naha.
