Mangalore: Goa CM Dedicates World Konkani Centre to Konkani People

Mangalore, Jan 17:  Digambar  Kamat, chief  minister of  Goa, inaugurated  the ‘P Dayanada Pai and P Satish Pai  World  Konkani  Centre’ at Konkani Gaon, Shakthinagar, on Saturday January 17. 

He termed the centre a historical gift to Konkani literature and added that Konkanis in Karnakata were highly dedicated to the cause of Konkani language and literature the world over.

Konkani literature has got its first Jnanapeeth award and it will also get the Bharat Ratna and the Nobel prize, he said referring to recent Jnanapeeth  awardee Padmabhushan  Ravindra Kelekar, who was present on the dais. 

Kamat felicitated Kelekar and also handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lac to the Konkani  Language and Cultural Foundation. He also released the Konkani translation of a book on Mahakavi Govinda Pai.

Luizinho Faleiro, former chief minister of Goa, launched the Konkani website. 

R V Deshapande, chairman emeritus, Konkani Language and Cultural  Foundation and president, Karnataka Pradesh Congress said that the centre would help  Konkani people to give their best to the field of Konkani literature and language. Deshpande also who presided over the  function. 

The foundation felicitated its chief patron, Dayananda  Pai. Asha Kamat, wife of Digambar Kamat, Sandhya Pai, managing editor, ‘Taranga’ weekly, and S M Syed Khaleel, entrepreneur from UAE, were the guests of honour. 

Basti Vaman Shenoy, president of the foundation president welcomed the gathering while vice–president M Raghuram Shet presented a report on the project. Ronald Colaco, entrepreneur from Bangalore, and Kudpi  Jagadish Shenoy, treasurer of the foundation, were also present.

    Contribution of konkani speaking people to community development is really admirable. Manjeshwar Govinda Pai, T M A Pai, T A Pai, U S Mallya, Guru Dutt, Ananth Nag, Shankar Nag, H V Kamath, JM Lobo Prabhu, Digambar Kamat are some of the prominent Konkani personalities whose contribution to various field is remarkable. This centre should help further growth of konkani speaking people. Congrats, Dayananda Pai.

    We wish to congratulate Basti mam (Shri Basti Vaman Shenoy) and his entire team for their relentless efforts which have culminated in the setting up of this centre of great pride and dedication. No doubt, the centre has opened a new horizon in the further developement of our Konkani language - its culture and heritatage. We must strive to work for the progress of our language and its people in unity in spite of diversity. We wish all the success in their yeoman services in the future.     This Centre should foster the open-ended growth of Konkani accomodating all its diversity, in which it exists on a regional scale.
