Udupi, Oct 12: “Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) has received recognition as per UGC rules for five years from 2018. Admissions for 17 approved courses have already started. The last date for admissions is extended till October 20. Admissions for MBA and B Ed will start from January 2019,” said KSOU chancellor Prof D Shivalingaiah.

Speaking in a news conference on Thursday, October 11, he said that UGC had cancelled the recognition of KSOU on June 15, 2015 for technical reasons and having violated the suggestions and rules of UGC. “KSOU had subsequently submitted necessary documents as per UGC rules 2017 for recognition for the period 2018-2019. As UGC approval is obtained for admissions from the current academic year, seventeen courses will be started,” he said.

“An appeal to the higher authorities for recognition to the remaining 15 courses is submitted along with necessary documents. On that basis approval for 14 courses except LLM is received on October 3, 2018. Another appeal will be submitted soon for recognition of LLM. October 20 will be the last date for admission for 12 courses among them,” he said.

“Seventeen regional centres are opened for the convenience of students. KSOU regional office functions in Udupi old zilla panchayat building. Kunjibettu MGM college, Ajjarakadu women’s first grade college, Karkal Bhuvanendra college and Hiriadka government first grade college are study help centres,” he said.

Special concession

“BPL card holding ladies candidates applying for admission will be given a concession of 25%. Students belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe will have to pay Rs 800.

As admissions are being started after the gap of three years the number of students is less. Therefore the date for admissions is extended. 10,470 students have already registered. 151 candidates from Udupi and 200 candidates from Dakshina Kannada have received admission. The last date of admissions is extended till October 20. KSOU certificate is eligible to submit applications for competitive examinations, private, state and central government jobs. Therefore students need not be worried. There is no difference between degrees secured from traditional universities and KSOU,” he added.

Udupi regional centre head Dr Mahalingaiah was present.
