Mumbai, Nov 6: Seasonal changes can disrupt young children's routines and increase their exposure to infections. As temperatures drop, toddlers may spend more time indoors, while playdates and daycare activities can increase the risk of catching illnesses. Parents can follow a few simple precautions to keep their little ones warm, comfortable and protected during winter.
Dr Sanjiv Singh Rawat, paediatrician at Child Care Hospital, Tilak Nagar, Indore, recommends four essential measures for winter baby care.

One of the most important steps is dressing babies in comfortable layers. While keeping children warm is essential, excessive clothing can cause overheating. Parents should choose breathable layers that can be added or removed depending on the temperature. As a general guideline, babies may need one additional layer compared to adults. Their chest or back can be checked to assess whether they are warm, as their hands and feet may naturally feel cooler. Hats and extra layers should be removed indoors, and loose clothing or blankets should be avoided during sleep.
Maintaining proper hand hygiene is another important measure. Regular handwashing with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser when soap is unavailable, can help limit the spread of germs. Parents should encourage children to wash their hands before meals and after playing or returning from outings. They should also be discouraged from frequently touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
Parents should also limit their children's exposure to people showing symptoms of coughs and colds. Respiratory infections tend to be more common during winter, and young children can be particularly vulnerable. Avoiding the sharing of cups and eating utensils and limiting close contact with anyone experiencing cold or cough symptoms can help reduce the risk of infection.
Keeping vaccinations and booster doses up to date is equally important. Recommended immunisations help protect children against preventable diseases, reduce the spread of infections and safeguard the wider community. Parents should carry their child's vaccination record during paediatric visits, review the immunisation schedule with their doctor and discuss any missed or catch-up doses.
As the season changes, parents are encouraged to reinforce everyday hygiene practices and remain alert to signs of illness. Following these simple precautions and ensuring timely vaccinations can help children stay comfortable and healthy throughout winter.
