Udupi: Man jailed in Kuwait - DC promises clearer picture in two days

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 30: Udupi district administration has been doing everything within its command to bring Shankar Poojary (40) from Basrur near here back to India from Kuwait where he is presently in jail.

Reportedly, Poojary, who was employed in Kuwait and was returning to work after visiting home, was caught by the authorities at the airport in Kuwait with a parcel of tablets containing banned substance three months back. This parcel was being carried by him at the instance of a colleague, it is said, and this colleague escaped by telling the authorities that he has nothing do with this parcel.

Shankar Poojary has been in jail since the last three months. The Udupi district administration has so far not succeeded in getting concrete information about why he was imprisoned there. Deputy commissioner (DC) of the district, Priyanka Mary Francis, invited Poojary's wife, Jyothi, to her office on Wednesday too and collected additional information needed.

At the same time, Human Rights Protection Foundation here too has been putting together details. The foundation too has got in touch with the Indian embassy in Kuwait.

The family had taken up the issue with the ministry of external affairs through the MP in the past, and the ministry has written to Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje, informing her that Shankar Poojary's case has been registered and that all out efforts are being made to help him.

DC Priyanka Mary Francis said that her office has been in touch with the officials of the external affairs ministry and the Indian embassy at Kuwait relating to the case.

DC said that there have been certain problems as clear information about Shankar Poojary could not be collected. She said that efforts are continuing and hoped that a clearer picture about the case will emerge within a couple of days.

Jyothi said that she and her family now reposes totally on the district administration's promise to make every efforts to bring her husband back home unscathed.

Kuwait government is very strict on such matters. Drugs, alcohol, hidden weapons and prostitute still bad things take place. Releasing poojari may happen after prolonged legal and diplomatic process.

Mistake had happened. He took the parcel with good faith but when we travel abroad especially GCC countries we need to exert maximum caution not to take any parcel without scrutinizing in front of the party who request someone to do the favour. Once many years back such bad incident happened with me when my friend requested to bring parcel from Mlore. I agreed and when opened the parcel in front of delivering party, the parcel contained empty syringes (for the purpose of insulin use) I sad OMG. I have been saved.
I purchase medicines for my personal use at least year quota but I carry Doctor’s prescription, my medical reports from Kuwait the bill indicating my name and the cost. Let us hope that Poojari will be released/sent back to India as soon as possible. At least some people are working very hard and offering their help.

I don't understand why our guys are going to gulf to work like slaves and beg. They don't respect us. Still we are going there to just earn some money. Money is not everything in life. Our brothers and sisters should work in our country itself and be part of our developing country and look after their aged parents. Are we not living here?. We study in our country, use country's resources and use our talent for other country. This is not good. People don't want to work hard here. But in other country they are ready even to clean toilets.
Now just see this case we are begging for justice and any favor.

    Mr. Prabhu,

First we have to respect the country in which we are earning our food. Also we need to respect their law, rules and regulations. Then only they respect us. Ignorance of law is not excused.

I don't think so people are working like slave in abroad and you said they don't respect can you explain what kind of respect you are looking for ? people can work hard in hometown do you think everyone is going to get reward for it? without a reason no will work for other country. do you know how many educated people are there in back home sitting at home and looking for job ? whatever happened with Shankar Poojary its not good however we cant blame to their govt. its each and individuals responsibility if he doesn't know what's there in that parcel he should not take along with him even I take parcel for others once I get parcel I will ask them to open in front of me and will see what's there in it. if I feel its safe to take then I will if not then return back to them. I hope shushma is going to help him to come out from it .

first you make an attempt to call several 'Amchigele' who are in gulf. I have seen them enjoying the nice grilled kababs especially in desert safari. I lived in dubai for more than 14 years.

this shows your ignorance as you do not know the kind of peaceful life a person, even if he is a cleaner, fortunately I was not, can lead in gulf countries

Mr.Poonki who told you that amchigele are vegetarians. We are non vegetarian by birth. You mean to say that in India we don't get Kababs? Here we don't live peacefully?.

Prabhu, your comments is an evidence that you are a koopa manduka (frog in the well). Leave your Chaddi mind, come out of Karkala and experience the beauty of world with beautiful people. The respect we receive in Gulf countries is much more better than the respect we get in India by pea nut brained Chaddies.

The best things to do are:

Do not give or take parcels from anyone

Kindly refuse taking any parcels saying already lugguage is full or reached weight limit.

in emergency : ask the sender to open the parcel and you personally inspect each and every item in the parcel.. and either you repack or ask the sender to repack in your presence... Call your travel agent or concerned authority if you have doubt of what is allowed and what is banned.

If you follow these steps , NOTHING CAN GO WRONG!!!

First of all why are we going there? when we are staying in this beautiful country which is rich of natural resources and where we can live respectfully why are we going to these counties which is a desert where we don't have any respect and where we can get justice.

do you think when other country personnel visits if they get caught with some illegal items even our govt is going to do same thing and its a correct way. be advised we are not begging with sheikhs just requesting because Poojary's small mistake made huge difference for him. and stop blaming other countries without reason.
