Carrying colleague's parcel: Now, Basrur man lands in Kuwait jail

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 29: Jyothi, wife of Shankar Poojary (40) from Basrur near Kundapur, lamented that her husband, who had agreed to carry a parcel belonging to someone else to Kuwait was lodged in a jail there since the last three months for no fault of his.

It can be recalled that, Melwin Fernandes from Karkala was also jailed for about in 8 months in 2014 for carrying medicines for a friend. Several individuals and organisations had worked tirelessly for his release.

On Tuesday, deputy commissioner of the district, Priyanka Mary Francis, had invited Jyothi to her office to get details of the case and discuss legal remedies.

"My husband was working for a Kuwaiti company since the last four years. He had visited his hometown three months back for ten days. When he was returning to Kuwait, at the request of one of his colleagues, he agreed to carry a parcel handed over to him by a person from Udupi. The person had requested my husband to deliver the parcel to the mother-in-law of the sender, who he claimed, has been working there," she explained.

Once Poojary landed in Kuwait, the officials found a parcel containing tablets in his possession. "During his questioning, he told them that he had brought it for being delivered to a woman working in that country. But his colleague who was instrumental in sending the parcel through him told the police that he had nothing to do with the parcel, thus cheating my husband," she said.

Jyothi stated that the memorandums submitted to MPs, Nalin Kumar Kateel and Shobha Karandlaje, union minister, Sushma Swaraj and several people's representatives, explaining about the plight of her husband and seeking their help to get him released, have not evoked any positive response to far. She has requested people in important positions to help her get back her husband.

District superintendent of police, Laxman Nimbargi, Kundapur assistant commissioner, Bhoobalan, president of Human Rights Protection Foundation, Dr Ravindranath Shanbhog, district president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Ansar Ahmed, and several others were present.

The deputy commissioner said that as there is no clarity about the information provided by Jyothi, officials will directly contact Indian embassy at Kuwait to collect full details of the case and on the basis of that information, further action would be initiated.

I saw in Gulf airport there are. Dogs. I asked one of my colleagues why these dogs are for?he told me that these dogs are well trained and if someone brings banned items they will detect. Hence they mark this particular baggage and thus easily catch the person.
My question is why in Indian airports we cannot install this facility? So that then and there itself we can stop this nonsense!!!
No need to break our head later by catching the legs of officials

No you cannot. Banned medicines may not be carried from other country even with prescription. As far as I know Some Middle East countries require prescription from a doctor inside the country and medicines have to be purchased after you land in the country with the valid prescription.

Best is in future when you dont want to disappoint your close ones or best friend?s,let them open the parcel in front of you or you open it in front of them, and see the contents.you decide whether to take it if harmless,or give back politely saying you dont have place, try if you can. When you doubt ,or dont know the contents, leave back without any hesitation.Afterall you will be on the safer side or will be in trouble when not clear.Hope and really pray the guy who brought him into hells kitchen will be found and brought to talk .He should be made to pay for all these trouble.and pray that Shanker be freed as soon as possible.Pray at Mother Marys feast.

Please don't carry anything belonging to anybody and definitely no medicines, I see so many innocent people being duped, hood winked in the this dubious act.

Sometimes people ask those coming to bring certain medications as it is cheaper in India, Still don't do it.Easch Guld country has its own customs/narcotic laws that prohibit people from carrying these medicines.

If one needs to carry any medicine, have doctors prescription, also check there are websites that gives information of what canot be carried, there is one website created by Dr.Kamath, I don't have its address gives good info on what is barred.

In my early days, many many years ago I used to carry other people parcels out of respect, however when I once read someone being caught for no fault of his, I had stopped.
Please ,please don't get into trouble no matter how friendly that person might be.
    Use common sense.!!

Don't know why this madness keeps happening. Time and again warnings are issued for people not to accept packages from unknown people and also at airports. One stupid move can finish your career and sometimes even your life. Countries in the Middle East and South Asia are very strict on drugs and many countries have death sentences for transportation of drugs or dangerous substances.
Why don't people understand this simple thing. First of all never accept packages and even letters from unknown people. Secondly make it a point to open all packages including letters even from known people or relatives and make sure that everything is in order. In case you have even the slightest doubt, then refuse to carry such parcels. Carrying of medicines for any one should be a strict NO and even if the medicines are for yourself please see that you carry the relevant medical records and prescriptions with you and verify that the drugs prescribed are not banned in the country where you are going to.

Time and again, repeatedly messages are sent in Daijiworld and facebook, not to carry anything from anyone, even if you know the person. When you are at the airport , the mindset is in leaving back the family and getting back to work. Such moments you may face anyone asking to carry a parcel in the form of packet, or a bottle. Please do not carry anything of anybody, even if you are told that the person is serious. Remember there are doctors everywhere. Avoid the jail for not being careful and trying to help the wrong person.

Jyothi needs help in getting the culprit caught. He will deny but once in the jail he cannot.

Let us pray for the justice to Jyoth's husband.

Why is the question of human right here. Each and every country have their own law and order. My sympathy goes to the person, but no one is above the law of the country he landed. Most of the Indians who go to foreign countries to earn for their livelihood do not follow the guidelines and precautionary measures of the MEA. They carry anything given by relatives and friends as to be courteous towards them. When they are caught with illegal things at the receiving countries airport they land up in foreign jails. Since many people are not aware of consular assistance provided by Indian diplomats in foreign countries they fail to ask for any assistance. Sometimes their families also wouldn't be aware of the situations their family members facing. Soeople do follow the guidelines of MEA for your own safety.
