Kundapur, Aug 18: Kandlur, which is close to Basrur port, is well known for commerce for thousands of years. Hindus and Muslims who stay here in large numbers set aside their differences and celebrate Mari festival every year together as a mark of communal harmony. The festival was celebrated this year with the participation of people of all religions.

As per Hindu mythology Kakasura, a monster, before getting killed by Sridevi, a deity had taken a vow that a fare will be conducted with the participation of all the people in the villages every year here after offering sacrifices of blood. Devi agreed for it. Therefore, sheep and hens are offered here as sacrifices every year.

As the population of Hindus and Muslims grew here, there was a setback for communal peace. Some unpleasant incidents did take place here. But the majority of the people remained together and united. This unity is a manifested during this feast every year.

Devotees from five nearby villages offered pooja to Marikamba, since morning.

Mari temple and Mosque here are located at a distance of only twenty meters from each other.

Local Muslim leaders distributed soft drinks and tea to thousands of devotees who took part in the procession giving a message that all are one.
