Bengaluru: Stamp, first day cover, postcard to mark Christ University Golden Jubilee released

Bengaluru, July 11: A special postage stamp, first day cover and post card to commemorate the golden jubilee of the Christ Deemed to be University was released at its campus here on Wednesday, July 11.

The special postage stamp, first day cover and post card was formally released by S Rajendra Kumar, post master general of Southern Karnataka Region, after Dr Fr Thomas C Mathew, vice-chancellor, declared the year-long golden jubilee of Christ Deemed to be University open.

The function held in the presence of Dr Fr Abraham VM, pro-chancellor, Dr Anil Joseph Pinto, registrar and Jugunu Uberoi, president of Christ University Alumni Association, faculty members and staff was marked by a glittering show of dance and singing performances by the students.

The vice-chancellor, in his brief address, recalled the modest beginning as an ordinary college with barely 350 students and 18 teaching staff on July 15, 1969 and said it has grown into one of the best and most prestigious institution of higher learning as Christ Deemed to be University with over 21,000 students, 1,000 plus teaching staff and around 600 supporting staff.

Underscoring the Christ Deemed to be University’s motto of excellence and service, he said quality and not quantity were the hallmarks. He reminded the students to always bear in mind that they are and will always be Christites committed to serve the society, the country and enrich the world in whatever they do.

The formal golden jubilee inaugural function is scheduled to be held on July 14 with Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, Maharaja of Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, chairperson of Infosys Foundation in India and trustee of Infosys Foundation, USA, Dr Sudha Murthy and former home minister B Ramalinga Reddy taking part with Mandya bishop and former principal of Christ College Antony Kariyil presiding.

Another special get-together of alumni association and teaching staff with All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairman Dr Anil D Sahasrabudhe as the chief guest and Infosys co-Founder and non-executive chairman Nandan Nilekani and Karnataka’s Rural Development, Law and Parlimanetary Affairs minister Krishna Byre Gowda as the guests of honour would be held on July 21.
