Best in India: Bengaluru airport wins international award in regional category

Bengaluru, Mar 23 (IANS): The Bengaluru airport won an international award for being the best in India and Central Asia under the regional category, said its operator on Thursday.

"The Kempegowda international airport was given the Skytrax award for being voted as the best regional airport in India and Central Asia by air travellers at the World Airport Awards at Stockholm in Sweden on Wednesday," said Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) in a statement here.

As the country's third busiest airport after Mumbai and Delhi, the airport at Devanahalli on the city's northern outskirts won the award for the second consecutive year and two times in 2015 and 2011.

"The award reaffirms our commitment to provide a world-class experience for travellers at the airport," said BIAL Chief Executive Hari Marar on the occasion.

The Skytrax awards is the largest passenger satisfaction assessment and prestigious among surveys measuring airport service excellence and quality.

The winners were declared based on 13.73 million questionnaires from 500 airports worldwide, surveyed between August 2017 and February 2018.

A key directive of the survey is for passengers to make their choices as to which airport they consider the best.

'Regional Airports' refers to those operating short international and domestic flights, than having a vast intercontinental network.

About 250 lakh passengers used the decade-old airport in calendar year 2017, up 13 per cent from 2016.

Nearly 45 Indian and international airlines operate services, connecting 62 cities across the country and overseas.

BIAL is a consortium of public and private investors, including the central and state governments.

    Mr Ramesh,

We all know that airports come under AAI, by the way we are not dumb. Still there is nothing wrong in congratulating the CM. The awardee airport is in Karnataka state. So people are merely expressing their joy to Sri Siddaramaiah the CM of Karnataka.

    Cool down Sir..

I agree Bangalore airport is good and fairly well planned, arrival and departure area, taxi waiting area is planned using adequate space. Can not say the same about Mangalore airport. Haphazardly planned and organised. Always chaotic pick up and drop off area. Awkward turns and U turns makes it messy, always blockade, making way to move is Herculean task most often. For a decade no one could manage this mess and during rain it is worst! Besides, Approach mountain road until terminal is good....departure slope is not worthy of any standard. Hope some responsible people will look into it. I guess it is a major design flaw when it is shifted to new terminal! Who will take initiative is a good question!
Further roads towards Udupi there is no direct route, must go through Kavoor, Kateel road to Shirva- Karkala is too curved and often get stuck behind lorry or tipper! Our two term MP is too busy to look into it!

Narendra, if Yogi is appointed as CM a year ago & if his state is in a pathetic conditions due to the previous government rulings, I would suggest that Yogi now have to put in extra efforts to improve his state, instead of visiting our much more developed state, by wasting his valuable money & time. After all what we r going to gain from his Speeches here?

Dev, Who told U that no sufficient water as if U have enough water in Delhi & in other States. What BJP did when they were in power in Karnataka to improve water crises if U think that there was water shortage. Don't be jealous. We should be proud of our States achievements.Again I am telling U that we may have to send back all North Indians & Gujjus back to their respective states who have been provided plenty of job opportunities by our Karnataka Government. Needless to mention that I have been staying in Bangalore for the last 10 years, & I have not faced any water shortage.
