Udupi, Mar 10: The election battle in Udupi district has just got more interesting with Sri Laxmivarateertha Swamiji, head of Shiroor Math, deciding to enter the fray as an independent, or as BJP candidate if given the ticket.

Announcing his decision in a press meet here on Saturday March 10, Shiroor Swamiji said, "I did not need to stand for elections, but I feel political parties are not responding to people's problems as they should have. Therefore I have decided to contest the Assembly elections this time as an independent candidate from Udupi constituency.

Saying that he was ready to contest from BJP if given the ticket, he said, "The BJP leaders in Udupi are not doing a good job. When they were in power, they did not do anything for Udupi. I feel saddened about this. Hence, I am ready to contest on BJP ticket, if given, so that I can work for the betterment of the party in Udupi. If not, I will contest as an independent candidate.

"The BJP at the national level is doing really well, with a number of pro-people initiatives. The party should work in the same way in Udupi," he added.

When asked if he would agree to contest from Congress if given the ticket, he said, "Congress already has a good candidate. Their MLA and district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj is doing excellent work for Udupi and is a role model. Problem is with the BJP. If the BJP had been doing good work, I would not have come to this decision."

He also made it clear that he was contesting the elections not to counter Madhwaraj.

Asked about the problems he sees within the Udupi BJP, he said, "You know it as well as I do. They do not care for the poor and the needy. I am disappointed with the BJP. When they were in power they did not do anything for Udupi."

Asked about how he would fulfill his religious committments when he needs to go to Bengaluru for Assembly sessions and other political reasons, he said, "There won't be any such problems. We will make arrangements. We will bring Bengaluru to Udupi."

On whether he would change his mind if the Ashta Math swamijis oppose his decision, he said, "They will not oppose. There is no such rule that we cannot contest elections. This has no connection to the Ashta Maths at all."

Asked how he would manage the financial aspects of contesting the elections, he said, "I will not need money to stand for elections."

He also clarified that no political party has contacted him and his decision is solely his own.

Sri Laxmivarateertha Swamiji is the first swamiji in the history of Ashth Maths to contest elections.

Dear Swamiji, it will be very dangerous for your image and respect if u join politics.. Even if u contest n win there is a very good chance that at the slightest mistake of yours in action or words will just destroy your good image in public permanently like Kejriwal..Better as some one said earlier if u have to do good there is no need to join politics..Try to be like mother Teresa

Power is very tasty. If the power hungry man joins religious order and then opt to join politics, then, core value of religious order is gone. if religious man becomes corrupt, then, where the public will seek spirituality.

    Dear Swamiji,
Politics is the most dirtiest evil on earth. It pits brother against brother, neighbour against neighbour, nation against nations and so on.
The qualities needed to be cultivated to build self-confidence are
    1) Conviction
    2) Hard Work
    3) Will-Power
    4) Self-respect
    5) Long preparation
    6) Communication
    7) Commitment
    8) Discrimination
    9) Definite Goal
    10) Love
    11) Concentration
    12) Strength
You may or may not have all the characteristics to represent citizens of India. It always does not
require political platform to connect to the rich and poor alike. One can be simple citizen of India with love, affection and humbleness to understand the problems of others required.
We would like to appeal personally to you to abandon your plans to join politics of opportunism. Religion and politics are deadly cocktail which can prove catastrophe and self destructive in the future for this nation. We citizen do not want to downgrade your respect in the society.
The role of 'Swamiji' in the present condition is need to bridge the gap between the societies and religions. Find fault is very easy way than rectifying it.
We do not Kannadigas do not want another CM Yogi in the making. Kindly keep your political ambition away and strive for your society who need to guide to right path.

Wise advise. I beleive such swami should be having wise thinking. It is sad swami is thinking wiser towards politics than god. So many things human can do without being a politician. Mother Teresa did so much without being a politician. She is a role model for all these swamijis to learn to serve the society in a humble and caring ways. Politics is corrupt bias and dirty. It has divided families societies peace and only created mess among people. All swami jis and baba s in india should follow gods teaching gs and serve the poor. Baba ram dev, Mr.Mr.ravishanker, UP cm all these guys go back and focus god work than put nose in politics.

everyone is eager to get money very fast, so politics is the only business where you can earn millions within short span,
if swamiji will contest as independent, or as bjp candidate, where the current bjp leaders will go?? and swamiji will get title, agent of congress, or anti national or anti hindu.
my advise to swamiji is be away from politics, it's dirtiest game ever, where you must lie to convince your supporters and voters, if swamiji think of doing good for society, there are many other ways, where you will get support from everyone, without cast or religion.

I would like to see a Swamy to become CM of our state. Just see the transformation in UP, criminals don't want to come out of jail even after giving bail., criminals themselves running towards police stations to get arrested. This is how the rule should be. If there is a Swamy as CM, they won't think building their own empire or for their family. They consider everyone as their family. There will be no corruption.

Being the citizen of India, swamiji has all the right to be the candidate for the elections. I find many commenting on Yogi Adithyanath and comparing swamiji with him. For all those ignorant, Yogi is the Mahanth of the Gorakshnath Peeth considered as Rajayogi with sanyasa deeksha and our shiroor swamiji is the head for one of the 8 mathas of Udupi, which is limited to the bhajakas of the math.
As we all know, no mahanth or swamijees are biased towards any communities and they all are for development. But crossing limits by either majority or minority, are not tolerated by any ordinary citizen. I support his candidature.
