Bengaluru, Feb 7: Roshan Baig, minister for urban development informed in the legislative assembly that plan for works for the reconstruction of the underground drainage (UGD) system of Karkala town will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 140 crore.

He was replying to a question raised by Sunil Kumar, MLA of Karkala, with regard to the underground drainage system of Karkala which he said is in a mess.

The minister said, "Underground drainage system of Karkala town is 25 years old. Increase in the population and construction of the multi-storeyed buildings are factors that have contributed to the present clutter. There is a need of Rs 140 crore grant in order to refurbish the whole drainage system.

"SFSSM plan for waste management is being implemented now in the state of Karnataka. Deputy commissioner of Udupi has requested for special grant of Rs 4.35 crore with the director of urban administration. The government is going to take action for the release of this grant. A feasibility plan report with regard to this work will be prepared and effort will be done to implement the plan," he added.

Sunil Kumar had questioned, "Because of the mess, underground drainage water is getting mixed up with drinking well water. What is the temporary solution for this problem till the plan is implemented? What are the interim steps taken by the government to address this issue?"

"If the government is not going to implement the underground drainage system, there is a high possibility of drainage water seeping into the drinking well water and this may create havoc. It is alleged that the government has not sanctioned this work still. Immediate release of the grant will give a solution to this serious problem," he added.
