Mangaluru, Feb 4: A large crowd, practically comprising an entire locality, gathered at Kulshekar here on Sunday February 4 to witness the 'guddali puja' or groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited Kulshekar-Kannagudde road by MLA J R Lobo and mayor Kavita Sanil.

Usually groundbreaking ceremonies for roads attract only a handful of locals, but this was different, with scores of people flocking to the programme venue to watch their long-pending demand taking the first step towards fulfilment.

Addressing the gathering, J R Lobo said, "For the past 40 years, around two thousand people living in Kulshekar-Kannagudde area have been facing difficulties without a proper road. They are fed up of giving memorandums to officials regarding this. When I was elected, they collectively came to me requesting for a road. I went through their memorandum and planned to implement this project.

"Two years ago, we succeeded in getting a fund of Rs 85 lac from the state government, but the railway department objected to the road project. I then met many railway officials, attended their meetings and tried to convince them. I even wrote letters to the railway chairman about this. Finally, they asked an amount of Rs 1.35 crore as premier affairs. Mangaluru City Corporation agreed to give this amount and once the amount was deposited, the railway department gave permission for the new road," he explained.

"Now this road connects Kulshekar to Kannagudde. From Kannagudde to Kannur we are planning to construct another road at a cost of Rs 10 crore. This road will give people easy access to Moodbidri and Bengaluru roads without having to enter the city. I have been able to fulfil what I had promised the people of this area, so it is a joyful moment for me too along with the locals," Lobo said.

Mayor Kavita Sanil said, "We thank J R Lobo for his tremendous, visionary development work. He has made the 40-year dream of the people of Kulshekar and Kannagudde area come true. No one had succeeded in implementing this project so far because of many hurdles and railway rules. But our MLA has acted wisely and within four years solved the issue of forty years. By bringing mega projects like Smart City and many development works he has earned a special place in the hearts of the people of Mangaluru. Today everyone is talking of J R Lobo as the architetect of the modern face of the city."

Local corporator Bhaskar said, "We the residents of Kannagudde area are grateful to J R Lobo. From the past several years we are facing problems due to lack of a proper road. In rainy season the people of this area, especially elders, women and children face a lot of problems. All the representatives who had earlier won from this constituency turned deaf ears to our pleas. But when J R Lobo got elected as MLA, we had hopes that this road would be rebuilt. Within two years he succeeded in getting the funds from the state government and NOC from the railways. There is no doubt that if he wins again in the upcoming elections Mangaluru will become a world-class city."

Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, corporators Naveen D'Souza, B Prakash, Sabitha Misquith, Keshava Maroli, MCC commissioner Mohammad Nazeer, Kallige Tharanatha Shetty, Prabhakar Shreyan, Abid Kannur and others were present.

Hundreds of residents from Kulshekar, Kannagudde, Kannur and Saripalla were present and they thanked J R lobo by honouring him with garlands.

The new road will be 1 km long streching from Kulshekar to Kannagudde. The road connects the areas of Umikana ground, Surya Nagar, Nooji, Saripalla, Pulire, Kalai, Frad Saibh Colony, Karphimar and Dekkadi. Once the project is complete, it will be extended up to 4 km to Kannur at a cost of Rs 10 crore. Before extending the road, an underpass may be required, funds for which may be sanctioned soon.

It is absurd to vindicate Mr. Lobo (whom I do not know) for his genuine services to his constituents, you are damned if you don’t and damned if you do. Bringing about progress to our rural communities should not be tied to ulterior motives and I agree (for those who opine so!). When tax payers and citizens rise vehemently and rightfully for their share of basic civic needs, powers to be will have no choice but to cave in. It is sad that it has taken 40 years to raise the conscience of the Government. This is an example of how pathetically slow progress can be in our country, it is a life time for many! We have no choice but to get there and we will so long as we have the will to make a difference.

Hats off to you Mr. Lobo. For the past 5 decades none of the elected leaders understood the problems of us, the people of this area, whichever party he may be. But today we are overjoyed that our dreams are coming true and our body joints will get relaxed very soon, whether we travel by bus, our own vehicles or by foot. The vehicle owners of this area including the bus owners of the 3 city buses plying in this route will have a sigh of relief very soon. God Bless you for feeling yourself the pain and sorrow of the people living in this area, may we have many more such people like you to represent in the coming Assembly elections and next years Parliament elections. Wish you all the best.

Really great work by MLA J R Lobo. The condition of the road was pathetic for so many years. I still remember my friend waiting for timing bus to his house in saripalla and worry about the road. Today by visionary action of Mr Lobo, it has become an reality. Kudos to the work and efforts put by him. May God bless him abundantly. May he win the 2018 elections. Because actions speak.

Hats Off to you Mr. Lobo for your great Efforts. All the previous and some present politicians are good for nothing. Mr. Lobo does the work everywhere in his Constituency. I salute this MLA. Approachable and understanding. I never thought this would be possible even in my dream. I am residing in this area for last more than 65 years, has seen he ordeal faced by the people. See the portion of the mud road which in the picture and you will understand the plight of the people . This mud road passes over the first Tunnel of the Konkan Railway. Even the City Bus Route No 4 (S R Brothers) had fallen down on this road. The village roads in the entire DK district are far far better than this. Jai Hind

Mr Concerned Mangalorean, i really dont care if its a gimmick or a jibe that you have just stated. For residents of this area who have been living for the past 50 years, this has been a boon, we actually need to pinch ourselves to believe that we finally get to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The railways played hard ball to ensure that no development takes place over many years. It was indeed as Mr Lobo mentioned a continuous effort in ensuring that this is taken to a logical conclusion. Mr Lobo is a man of action & he needs to be rightly respected for the efforts he has taken along with his team. He has displayed virtues of a great leader than a manager. He has shared the win for this project for all the residents as well as the committee members. I take this opportunity to thank each and every member from each family for being present for this occasion, thus giving a moral support to the project.

As per Congress party's opinion poll, if J.R LOBO lose next election, it would be a Great Loss for Mangaloreans not for J. R Lobo. (opinion was 50/50) Therefore don't waste your valuable Vote by choosing communals who don't have even a minute knowledge of Development other than Cow & Protest!!!!!!

Very rightly said Usha, 'He is a public servant. Its his duty to get the job done.
We the voters have elected him to do his job'....... May i now remind you, we had Yogish Bhat/Amarnath Shetty as an MLA & the late M Jayaram Shetty as an MP. They were at their peak from 92 onwards. Today we paid the railways 1.35 crores. If your above statement stands true, then today we would have saved the exchequer RS 1.27 crores. This project started with a demand for RS 8Lakh by the railways, it was a complete failure on the part of the concerned MLA'S as none of them thought of bringing this to a logical end. I am not taking any political sides in expressing my point of view, but to be an MLA you need to have a vision of what you are doing. As Mr Lobo rightly said, Success has many Fathers, but Failure is an orphan.
