Indian missions abroad should issue Aadhar to NRIs: Congress

Panaji, Jan 24 (IANS): Indian embassies and consulates should issue Aadhar cards to NRIs, Goa Congress President Shantaram Naik said in a letter to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday.

Naik said that the current procedure that requires Indian citizens living abroad to travel to India to obtain Aadhar cards was cumbersome.

"Government should make arrangements in all embassies, consulates and other designated places to issue Aadhar cards to Indian citizens residing abroad," Naik wrote.

"It is not practical to require the presence of Indian citizens to come down to India only for the purposes of obtaining Aadhar cards," Naik said.

Goa has more than two lakh expats working primarily in Europe and the Gulf region.

I was in India for short visit.... I wanted to have internet and mobile facility during my visit to India. No one was ready to process my request as for each and facility they require Aadhar card. I visited to all the banks and I wanted to do some changes in my account and I produced ration card, driving licence but they asked me they want Aadhar card for address proof. Even Non resident children to take admission and appear for exams they want Aadhar card.

We agree and support your recommendation and hope the Government authorities will consider this genuine request from all NRIs. We have facility to issue passports and other documents here in Oman and why not Aadhaar cards? Incidentally, it may please be noted that we were made to loose a part of our hard earned money during demonetisation due to the lack of any acceptance facilty by the Government of India, despite a promise from the Indian Embassy, Muscat.
