UIDAI to introduce face recognition to enhance Aadhaar security

New Delhi, Jan 15 (IANS): The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Monday said it was going to roll out face authentication as an additional security feature for Aadhaar verification from July 1.

The new feature would make it convenient for those who have difficulty in authentication through fingerprints or iris.

However, the face recognition would be used only in "fusion mode", that is it would be valid only when used along with one more authentication feature -- fingerprint or iris or one-time password (OTP), the UIDAI said in a statement.

Presently UIDAI provides two modes of biometric authentication -- fingerprint and iris.

"The UIDAI has decided to enable face authentication in fusion mode on registered devices by July 1, 2018 so that people facing difficulty in other biometric authentication (fingerprint and iris) could easily authenticate," the Authority said.

"The face authentication feature will provide additional option for all residents to have inclusive authentication. Besides, the feature will also be allowed on need basis," it added.

The moves comes due to mismatch of biometrics being reported, including those faced by senior citizens with fading fingerprints. Fading fingerprints is also faced by people in rural areas who depend on labour-intensive employment.

The UIDAI said the new feature will help in "inclusive authentication of those who are not able to biometrically authenticate due to their worn out fingerprints, old age or hard work conditions".

It said that since face photo is already available in UIDAI database, there is no need to capture any new reference data at the Authority's Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR).

Aadhaar authentication is being used as the primary identity verification mechanism by many systems such as banks, telecom companies, PDS, Income Tax Department, employees attendance etc.

First, the Aadhaar number is not a secret number. In fact, it is just a unique random number associated with a person. The other pieces of information that Aadhaar has are the name, gender, date of birth and communication address of the holder. None of these is secret information. If a policeman on the road suddenly gets hold of you and asks your name and address, you are mandated, under law, to truthfully disclose that. No harm can be caused to a person if somebody has a copy of his Aadhaar letter.
In the current controversy, one of the persons who had access to the search facility sold his credentials to somebody. It was, thus, claimed that the purchaser of these credentials has access to the entire Aadhaar database. Yes, he can now enter an Aadhaar number and download the Aadhaar letter relating to the concerned person.
But he will then have to guess and plug in a billion Aadhaar numbers a billion times, and enter a 'captcha' (completely automated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart), a challenge-response test, for every transaction, and then alone can he download the e-Aadhaars. Guessing is also difficult as every 12-digit number is not an Aadhaar number. The chance of guessing correctly is only 1%. There are 10,000 crore 11-digit numbers—the 12th digit being a 'check number'.
So, if one person shares his credentials with another for a consideration, can this be called a data breach that exposes the weakness of the system? This is not a breach of system, but a breach of trust.
So, this is the real news: not even a single biometric data, repeat not even a single biometric data, has been leaked in the last seven years since the first Aadhaar was issued. If that is not adequate security, what is?

It's truly surprising to see how people are able to blindly believe that something like this is a good thing! Just few days back all contact details and personal identification information (which by the way comes under sensitive information) was sold by someone who is using the Aadhar for verification! lol. What good is this system if even its users are able to steal and sell sensitive information? In something like Aadhar, not even the people working in the Aadhar company should be able to access any citizen's details, without written permission of the citizen himself/herself. When the entire system has been build without perfect security (what is currenly designed is in no way secure - we just saw that!), what is the point of adding more sensitive information to it?

Buying I phone is optional for citizens of India. Aadhar is made compulsory for each and everything by this government. Most of Indians do not own I phones. The market share of I phones in India is just 3% of smartphone market.

OMG! What a joke Modi and BJP. The height of madness. How many identicard one has to carry in a country like India. Is everybody a criminal? BJP think so. A thief identifies anther thief.

Most western and eastern countries of course have IDs for citizens by way of passport ,drivers licence, etc but of course NO BIOMETRICS taken in national citizenship ID, may be some countries at immigration checks like US for visa holders.

Countries like US,UK, FRANCE just to name a few ,have abandoned the idea of biometrics as there was intense opposition by citizenry because of exploitation. The term EXPLOITATION is very relevant to a country like India where small shop owners are authorized to collect this personal and private information.

Its sad state of affairs in India under BJP? Development under BJP or just Crazy government without any insight. Where are the intellectuals when the government is intruding in your personal and private information?

God save the citizenry, not BJP and MODI.
