Mangaluru city drowning report untrue, no worry for next 500 years: Scientists

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 20: Senior scientists in the Indian meteorological department have pooh-poohed the warning recently published in some media that the city will be among the first to drown due to global warming triggered by melting of glaciers. It was said that a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) tool had given this prediction, which was said to be accurate. This assurance came during the talk they had with a Kannada daily about the fears deep-rooted in the minds of city dwellers due to the said warning.

The scientists point out that over 200 countries are located on the sea and ocean shores across the globe, with many of the cities and islands standing barely a feet above the surface of seas. They said that NASA has not issued any report or warning about the above phenomenon, and hence, dismiss these claims as rumours. "There is no need to become panicky. Governments will not sit idle if there is any danger," they assure.

Scientist of Bengaluru-based Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Dr C N Prabhu, and B Puttanna, former director of Indian Meteorological department and scientist, say that the city will not go under water for a minimum of 500 years from now. They say that the city is not prone to such natural disasters, duly pointing out that scientifically it has not been proved that Mangaluru faces grave danger as is being made out. "As compared to this city, Kochi and Mumbai are located at a lower altitude from the sea level. Several islands including Maldives are situated only a couple of feet above the sea level. Therefore, there is no reason to believe that Mangaluru, which is 22 metres above sea level, will be among first cities to face the risk of sinking. This is nothing but a rumour," says Prabhu. He also points out that equipment has been installed to study changes in the surface of the sea and in its depths. So he argues that scientists and governments will take sufficient precautions in advance if there is likelihood of any danger to any part of the country due to global warming.

Puttanna feels that NASA scientists would have given the name of this city by way of an example during studies on global warming. He says that the Trump administration has stopped financial assistance to the research being conducted by NASA on global warming, which is resented by some scientists there. "There has always been difference of opinion among scientists of the Scientific Committee in USA about the positive and adverse affects of global warming, and one of the teams argues that change of one or two degree Celsius in climate over a period of a decade does not need to evoke any apprehension, and based on these reports, financial support to them has been taken back. Perhaps in response, the scientists would have chosen to mention about this city as an example," he adds.

"Even if glaciers in Arctic and Antarctic polar regions melt during the next hundred years based on expected change in global warming, the sea level will rise by only 3.5 mm. As three fourths of earth is covered by sea, this is negligible increase. Mangaluru can never be at risk so easily as there many countries and islands that are resting just a few feet above sea level," Puttanna adds.

Sea level will rise and many coastal cities will get submerged due to global warming and melting of glaciers. But the earth will never get destroyed for God has not created the world to destroy it. He has assured and promised us, “The righteous shall possess the earth and shall live forever on it.”

It's commonly expected that Melting Ice caps will cause Ocean levels to rise and its been forewarned that many Coastal areas will be submerged .
But when and which city exactly will be drowned cannot be pin pointed with 100 % accuracy.
Today we are in a stage of bogus data and all surveys and statistics of world Bank, GDP, GNP & Sensex being quoted to project the ups & downs of the Economy and living costs to suit one party or then other . But all this crap data does not appease the Common Man , The poor and Down trodden who are beset with a plethora of problems which seem to only increase by the hour.

The Govt on the other hand is bust trying to divert the people attention to useless issue like PADMAVATHI etc rather than focus on Important issues like Education, Costs of essentials, Safety of Women etc..

    Dear Mr. Joe Britto,
Nice to note your message (Comments). However we cannot say the economic indicators by World Bank is bogus prematurely. It is only a frame work to enable a country or a business establishment to achieve their bench marks. Other than this there are credit ratings by Standard & Poor’s (S & P), Moody’s and Fitch which will establish a company or a country to move forward. Kindly note everyone whether he is a citizen of a country or a employer or employee in a company is accountable and their performance and is measured in Key Performance Indicators (KPI) which will be the basis for his performance bonus or annual increments on merit basis.
To conclude I can only say we need some measurement system which is GDP, Imports, Exports, Reserves in Foreign exchange as gold etc. which will enable any country to move forward. Kindly note I am not an expert in economics and every day I learn a bit. Today our country (India) has achieved lots of development (irrespective of ruling parties) only we lack is infrastructure and energy network. India is very strong in communication system today (Thanks to Late Prof U R Rao).
Let us always try to give positive suggestions with a vision for growth and development and i would not like to argue further in this matter but i am open for any discussions

To be fair, the NASA scientist (who spoke to Hindustan Times), never talked about drowning. He talked of sea level rising. Later, media started using the words 'submerged', 'drown' etc.

The statements by these scientists is a bit confusing though. The NASA report says the difference in sea level rise is based not just on altitude, but on other factors as well (like which part of glaciers melt and so on.). The GFM tool helps to predict it. The scientists are talking just about altitude which is one of the factors.

Also the 3.5mm number - is probably a typing mistake. Globally, the sea level is already rising at around 3mm PER YEAR. If all the ice melts, it's going to be catastrophic.

The opinion by our scientists is greatly respected however is is some data on global warming:
Currently as per analysis on Green House Gas (GHG) emissions – Metric tonnes per annum : China has the highest rate of 10,000, United States 5,270, European union 3,914 and India 1,831.
Wood Mackenzie indicates if the GHG are reduced the global warming temperature can be reduced to 2 degree Celsius. To comply with this during the Climate change conference in Paris during 2015 it was agreed to bring down the temperature to 1.5 degree Celsius and an agreement was reached by about 139 countries.
Suggestion: Should we not try to bring down our current emission levels by using cleaner energy (Liquefied Natural Gas or Renewables) by avoiding burning of fossil fuels (Coal or Crude oil). Glaciers are melting and sea level may rise in future why we don’t look in this direction to achieve and hope to have a mission for 2035.

LNG is not good option for India as we need to import it and even though it's less carbon producing comparing to coal and oil, it still does the damage, especially when LNG un-burnt LNG escapes into atmosphere. Methane the main constituent of LNG has a heat absorbing capacity 40 times as much as CO2. For India and other hydrocarbon poor counties best options are solar power and nuclear power based on Thorium as India hold 23% of world's Thorium reserves. But we are yet to develop an economically viable Thorium reactor.

Mangalore city will drown if there is heavy rain only for some hours, no need for sea to rise.
No need of NASA or a Scientist to predict this... A layman can predict.....

Concrete roads, ( not uniform somewhere wide, somewhere narrow, somewhere square cut, somewhere triangle shape cut, somewhere convex cut, somewhere concave cut, somewhere up, somewhere down, somewhere manholes, etc..., )no drains, no footpaths.....

So roads are multipurpose...... Drains cum Footpaths cum transport....

It's not prossible for NASA to decide the end of the earth or any part of it. It's in the hands of the creator of the world, we call it GOD. Man has been to moon or landed in mars or whatever, the brain & technology behind this leap is undoubtedly, created by God. As someone mentioned here, only 5 seconds of jerk is enough to bring the end to this most developed world. No technology could save the us, if God decides to end us...
May all of us have a peaceful end.
