Mangaluru, Oct 25: Construction of a railway station at Kenjar here, which was undertaken by southern railway at a cost of Rs 50 crore, is almost complete. The station, which falls between Padil and Thokur stations, is strategically very important because of its proximity to the airport here. It is only three km away from the international airport.
Works on platforms, construction of station building and signals have been completed while work on second railway tracks is in progress. Although the station construction is nearing completion, at present, trains do not stop here. A plan of action has already been set rolling towards seeing that trains moving on this line stop here.
There is proposal for halting trains moving between the city and Margao express train (22636), city - Karwar passenger (56641), and city - Goa passenger (70106) at Kenjar.
Currently the road to airport from here takes a round about route via Karambar, Porkody and Jokatte KBS. A road to airport, if laid via Maravoor railway over-bridge, will be the shortest route. The railway department has acquired land for laying 1.5 km road and Malavoor gram panchayat has requested MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, to see that this road is laid at the earliest. The panchayat has passed resolution for making all important trains to halt at Kenjar and its president, Ganesh Arbi, said the panchayat will be writing to railway department too on this subject.
The railway under-bridge built near Jokatte KBS is filled with water and hence proved to be a waste. Although this road was meant for vehicular traffic, it was executed without giving due regard to water level there.
The railway station is yet to be named. Malavoor gram panchayat has adopted a resolution to name this as 'Pejawar' railway station and sent the same to all concerned including Prime Minister, railway minister, chief ministers, MP, MLAs and deputy commissioner of the district in view of the fact that the spot where the station has come up is located in Pejawar in Kenjar village.
