Rs 4,000 crore needed for runway extension at Mangaluru airport, says fresh proposal

Mangaluru, Sep 14: Airports Authority of India has come up with a fresh proposal as per which Rs 4,000 crore would be required for the extension of runway here. The issue of runway extension has been in limbo since many years.

A special meeting presided by MP Nalin Kumar Kateel was held at the auditorium of the airport on Wednesday September 13. The meeting was convened to discuss runway extension at the airport and other pending works. Officials said that as per the proposal now received, the authority has estimated that Rs 4,000 crore would be needed for land acquisition.

The MP instructed the officials of the authority to take steps towards acquisition of additional land required for the runway extension. He said that the state government has to acquire the land needed for the purpose and hand it over to the authority, duly adding that once this is done, the aviation ministry will take up the work of extending the runway .

    is it possible private parties can invest ,then 4000 or 8000 people are ready in south canara or nearby

    Most of the people are in favor of relocating the Airport to Padubidri or any other suitable place between Udupi and Mangalore. In my opinion Bajpe airport may be used for domestic flights and new airport is for international flights. I request the concerned authorities to rethink twice before coming to any conclusion.

    None is in favour of shifting the airport to padubidri or elsewhere as stated by Benjamin.. It is wise to extend the present runway and the facilities instead of aquiring land somewhere else, displacing people and families and spending lot of money for the new place.

    I would rather suggest that the Government extend the present runway first. When one runway is extended the other runway is also being extended.

    International airport should be anywhere in mangalore itself... either current one or any nearby.....it should not be shifted to any other District as mangalore is internationally recognized and a business hub.. With considerate population.

    Under such circumstances there is no need to extend the runway in view of the fact a good of passengers from Kasargod and beyond will soon be shifting to Kannur. There is possibility of decline in passengers unless more flights are introduced to newer destinations like Chennai (for connecting flights to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, etc.) and beyond GCC countries.

    Come on guys. It is easier than you think !

    See PM promised 15 lakhs to every citizen.

    At lest 1 citizen from all (or few) families sacrifices or gives this money to AAI or against shares.
    You need only 26,667 people to join hands.

    Government claims so many people gave up gas subsidy i.e. money paid from their pocket. This is just you are giving back lottery you promised back to the government.

    This table top airport can save all during storms, flooding, hurricane, tsunami etc as it is at an elevated place. It is near to heaven also.

    These Politian's and their supporters will ruin my HINDUSTAN for sure.
    Instead of spending 4000 crores on this old airport, construct a new airport as planned earlier at PADUBIDRI. So we can have 2 airports international at Padubidri and domestic at Bajpe. INSTEAD OF REPAIRING THE SAME OLD THINGS THINK OF CONSTRUCTING SOME NEW ALSO.

    Start campaign for new state of the art airport which is capable of handling even Airbus A380. Build it through public -private collaboration by issuing shares. Give the entire management to biuld to Dr. B R Shetty. This is the only way we can attract tourism to our coastal Karntaka. This is the only way we can save future mishaps at table top Mangalore airport.

    Dear Airport Authorities ad Govt Of India. Kindly do not waste our hard earned tax money on expansion plan for runway. Mangalore airport does not have good reviews and I think soon people from Kerala, Kasargod and others will have their own international airports. Which means our airport business will drop by 40 Percent as per surveys done last year. Being Mangalorian I like and love my place, but hate the politics played on us! So many Toll booths,Bad roads. Police force and their needs including decent living is not met! Our schools and colleges charge such high fees,even in the UK I did ot find anyone doing so. Govt thinks Mangalore is full of Rich people? No We all struggle for our daily bread,schooling,Medical needs and taxation.
    Look at the the Govt sponsored projects. Mangalore has become Chemical factory and even the air we breath has become poisonous( Water polluted already). And now Airport expansion? NO way Please invest into improving water storage, clean road and housing facilities for Police and security people.

    Let us not start blame game saying that Congress is right and BJP is wrong vice varsa.

    Do you know why is Nalin Kumar Kateel winning in Mangalore it is because of Congress leaders always appeasing the Minority Community. Janardhan Poojary is losing from the past 5 times. Why is he losing from the past 20 years? There must be some issues with Janaradhan Poojary or the Congress Leaders. Also I would like to know why is Verappa Moily ran away from DK Disctrict and contested in Chickaballapur constituency. Where was BJP 25 years back in our Undivided District? It is because of Congress leaders I.e Janardhan Poojary, Oscar Fernandes & Verappa Moily who are fit for nothing. I'm not saying Nalin Kumar is great etc. He is also same. So let us not blame any party etc. We need leaders who are inclined towards development of our Constituency. We need leaders who can give job opportunities for our Youths. Recently there was some strikes etc for giving jobs in Grameena banks to Andhra People. For this our Politicians should come out and fight. I didnt see any MP/MLA giving any statements etc. This is not happening. Pls go to our Neighbouring districts like Shimoga, Hassan. At least basic infrastructure like borewells, better Govt Schools facilities etc are been done by Deve Gowda and Yediruppa. Mohan MP from Bengaluru Central is very proactive always approachable. When IT employees had difficulties in travelling he took initiative and actively fought with SWR authorties took out fund from his MP quota and saw to that a Railway station was done which was beneficial to the public.

    Instead of saying Congress is bad, BJP is bad we can say Leaders whichever party who wants to do something for the society they can do it. Vision is required.
    Pls note I'm neither a Congress Supporter, Nor BJP nor affiliated to any Religious organisation.
    My vision is only that my Favourite District i.e Undivided Coastal Karnataka develops manifold.

    How many proposals have been submitted??
    Minimum 3 proposals required.
    What all scope is covered in 4000 cr..??

    provide all technical details..

    However it is for a good cause..not a dead investment like statues.

    Why divert Airport money, we must divert the money we are spending on building statues for appeasement. 3500 crores for Sardar Patel Statue in Gujarat and around 6000 crores for building statue of Shivaji in Mumbai.

    As per the recent servey by the Airport Authority,about the extension of runway it's clearly said in the report that extension is not advisable as the space available not enough to cope of with ever increasing load of passenger in the future.They advised to have alternative Air Port to solve this problem. Now serious thinking is required on this issue, this politicians are playing in this problem for their benefit with short term solution not bothered about the cost incurred on the airport and not interested in convince of public.

    A table-top airport offers no scope for expansion. Please relocate the airport to somewhere between Mangalore and Udupi where large tracts of land are available. A few hills can be flattened in order to obtain more space.

    Can someone please advise if vast tracts of land are available near Padubidri-Mulki?

    Ants work done by elephant ....Mr Nalin to study the feasibility report or else can somebody advice him....Bajpe is not at all suitable for table top reasons anybody can guess.. waste of tax payers fund....best ideal place will be along NH17 stretch till Padubidri/Mulky. If Veerappa Moily not budged to appeasement politics in 1992 Dr BR shetty made a world class Airport near Padubidri. after Dr.TMA Pai, Sri Srinivas Mallya,Sri KS hegde Sri KS Rao no politicians in undivided southcanara made a remarkable contribution to the district.

    Its true Mr Walter Sir..I heard from Dr shetty, he had appointed a coordinator for Airport Projects in 1992, and spent lacks for feasibility study,only his demand was to name the Airport as his wish. But Moily because of Mangalore side lobby ignored entirely.Undivided southcanara missed an opportunity to have state of art airport facility..SHAME ON ALL now we are looking at Kerala have 5 world class airports...

    Current Mangalore airport location is jinxed and devoid of enough land and space. If one remembers, there was a proposal to build airport at Kanchinadka, near Padubidri in early 1985 period.

    It was stalled due to again, APPEASEMENT POLITICS, just to relocate a few minority family from there. The CM was Veerappa Moily from Congress at that time who scuttled this project.

    If it had taken place, at that time, due to low land costs, it would have easy. There was a huge chunk of land which later Suzlon bought.

    The area would have developed faster and it was well connected, 37 kms from Mangalore and 23 kms from Udupi.

    Now, we cannot expand neither relocate due to high costs. Now, instead, we have polluting UPCL which came up near and entire coastal belt with suffer in another 20 years
